Yeah Laga nobody designs anything you just will it into existence and it will always look pretty and function/communicate intuitively.

Did you get a smiley face for your pasta collage in reception year? Or maybe mummy did it for you.

If you had your way every human settlement would look like strawberry floating Tearaway.

Just trade your eyes back in, no need for those anymore. Connect directly to the mainframe; aesthetics? Useless.

You're wrong anyway, poetry is English language. Burn down Oxford instead.

Also you wouldn't be able to post a gif if it wasn't invented for artists to animate with on the Internet.

I don't think his point was that art is pointless but that art school is.

If you are creative you can make stuff you don't need pretentious art school twaddle to do it, the wife's cousin did a whole heap of art stuff at college etc and it was self indulgent bollocks, she does the exact same art now as she did before except now she has a massively inflated opinion of the importance of her art over all else and is a hopeless human relaying on her mum etc because she can't go and work as it would compromise her art.

I'm sure there is loads of really good stuff done as part of art school etc. around history and that but there does seem to be a hell of a lot of twaddle that goes with it that inflates the students view of art and how it is the most important thing ever which just isn't helpful in the real world.

strawberry float that pretentious shite, you're a strawberry floating building society not an art school. Though I guess the job of both is to con people out of money for absolutely nothing of value in return.

You know the two friends in the photobooth is one of their poetry ones? Does a poem need a rhyme scheme to be considered pretentious?

:?

Yeah, you don't need a higher education in art to be successful or even good, obviously, but there's no way dedicated time at a good art school isn't going to teach someone new techniques at least. I'd be amazed if anyone who completes an art degree was making exactly the same kind of art in the exact same style as they were previously, or would be producing identical stuff if they had never gone to art school.

I Imagine there are changes but I dont see it as its just art and it isn't something that really interests me.

My point was more around the "the art is the world" thing that seems to come with it leading her to be this freeloading waster because actually doing something would compromise the art.

As a subject there is I'm sure gooseberry fool loads to learn but why does it need to come with this pretentious attitude that somehow they are higher beings and that if you don't think it is any good you just aren't getting it and aren't as good.

It's horse gooseberry fool is what it is, I get that creatives etc. are needed in the world or everything would be dull and I dont dispute their is a lot people learn from art school it is the attitude that seems to come with a lot of arty types that boils my piss.

I failed art at A level. It hasn't stopped me. I still make loads of things and branched out a lot into other media's now, I absolutely love it. And I paint at my own pace. I'm a slow painter and my art teacher at college hated how long I always took to paint anything (unless it was large blocks of colour). I don't think I'm pretentious with my work. If it looks like crap it probably is

There's loads to learn when it comes to everything, not just art, but you can learn outside of education too.

The only thing I ever took to heart from my university teachings in art/animation was that everyone always feels their own work is never good enough and would always want it to be perfect. So I always look at my work from an outsider's view now to mark whether it's good enough.

Yeah, I suspect that many people are their own worst critic when it comes to art and design; and there will always be folk who aren't keen on your work. Just do what you enjoy, do your best and try to gain satisfaction and learning from the experience. It ain't always easy to do that, though!

Exactly, and getting annoyed or aggravated that a certain few don't like your work should never put you off. As the saying goes, dwelling on negative thoughts can only increase your negativity.

WALL OF TEXT better added to my personal journal / book

You guys are conflating scarce ideas of what art schools do and individuals you find unimpressive with those institutions' (and by some extension a whole industry sector's, by implying they are not skilled subjects for which to teach), value to society - which is not based on reality.

I am suffering from depression at the moment and I sometimes feel I need to advocate for my time spent learning, studying and developing (in and out of education since I was very young) the skills I sell day to day, because cuts to the arts (public funding for and teaching it) are so severe many people are concerned we are losing parts of our culture in the long term and shrinking or making less viable valuable jobs and cultural exports. The exact same thing goes on for medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, maths, computer science and many other professional fields - that begin in schools - that are placed artificially at different sides of the table, and flippantly demeriting that usefulness is personally sad to see, over and over again, when you are doing it. I do feel that saying an entire group of national institutions has no value is a bit offensive when people have chosen to invest parts of their lives learning there. Is it fair to say to those people that they have therefore made an unjustifiable, pointless investment of their time? Why does it even matter?

£92bn sector growing at twice the rate of the economy

The UK’s booming creative industries made a record contribution to the economy in 2016, new statistics show.

Industries including advertising and marketing, arts and film, TV and radio, and museums and galleries are all part of this thriving economic sector, which is now worth almost £92bn, according to the figures published today by the Department for Digital, Media, Culture and Sport.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/crea ... uk-economy

Art education in general, and this filters right up the academic/political hegemony, is one of the favourite kicking bags of more rote-based subjects such as humanities, or (actually) comparably creative disciplines like programming (which makes very little sense to me, as I have done both), so you do become more than a little bit tired of individuals suggesting your work is bullshit. I don't surprise myself, or feel it is even a little excessive, sticking up for it from time to time.

I'm beginning to suspect GG is taking a bit of gentle ribbing rather personally.

I was serious about the attitude of people I've experience that have gone through art stuff.

As I said there is obviously a lot of learning that goes on about history and whatever else which GG seems to have ignored to make a longwinded post.

However, from my experience there is an arrogance that comes across with some people and that go through it that their art is more important than anything else that leads them to lean on others because they couldn't possibly support themselves as it would compromise their art.

Thats a generalisation and isn't the case for all people certainly but it is something I have seen from some people I know.

Just to reiterate so it is obvious I understand their is more to art schools that painting and stuff I'm not a strawberry floating idiot, my point was about the attitude of some art school people that art and stuff is the most important thing and so they are to be revered and treasured because of it.

To be honest I've probably done more outside of an education system than in one. I know that going to an art school would not have been in my best interests at the time. College for me was not a good experience, and by the end I was exhausted, my art teacher hated my style and I had a lot of personal stuff going on. It was a nightmare, and it completely put me off going to university. I ended up doing an apprenticeship in administration instead.

It didn't stop my love and appreciation for art, I've been trying different styles, different mediums, all sorts for ages now. I love disassembling designs and figuring out how I can sculpt them, figuring out how people have made and designed things they've created. For me it's all part of the fun of being an artist.

I know I'm probably not going to be as good as someone who has been to university and taught everything, but I still find art fun to do. Not having a university education isn't going to stop me. I have respect for the people who have gone through uni and done well afterwards, but I know I made the right decision for myself.

Agreed, Om is a masterpiece.
