Genuine recurring conversation with customers I've served -

"Would you like crisps or a cookie with that?"

"Yes."

"Which would you like, crisps or a cookie?"

"Crisps."

"Which flavour would you like?"

"Doritos."

"...which flavour Doritos?"

It's got a massive touchscreen on the front for you to choose your drinks, which is harmless in itself I guess but seems like a massive case of over-engineering - what was wrong with buttons?

But even more annoying is that it plays random videos all the time - like small clips of nature, some trees, maybe a waterfall etc. Who goes into a design meeting and says - what our coffee machine really needs is to show shitty little videos all the time for no good reason!

Think of the needless amount that has added to the cost of the machine, not to mention the cost of running the thing which is just sat there playing these videos to nobody 99.9% of the time! :fp:

Aaaakshuuully

I've been to a place thst makes those. They have those screens because they're used for multiple purposes. A big coffee chain may have them, a shopping mall may have a standalone one serving fizzy drinks and so on. The screen allows their own branding , selection to be added and changed on the fly. The videos are placeholders and optional, your place could turn them off, but they're there to be replaced by bespoke advertising by said chains etc. FEELING THIRSTY? *slomo video of coke pouring plays* and so on.

I get that the screens can serve a purpose in commercial outlets, but in a private office where the drinks are free and the machine lives in a room that is empty for the vast majority of the day?

Also the screen does not use (or at least has not been configured to use) a screen saver so it's basically sat there wasting power all day and wearing out the display showing these pointless videos.

I still think it's a massive waste of energy and it all just creates more parts of a machine that can go wrong.

I'm afraid you're probably wrong about that. There's less that can go wrong with a touchscreen if it's half decent, and it doesn't use very much power.

But in this case it's likely overkill yes.

It's another one of those things that are designed mostly for business arguments. It's actually cheaper as well.

The touchscreen drinks machines in restaurants are awful now because they only have one nozzle and the touchscreens hardly save time with the animations between screens :dread:

I get that more choice is apparently a wonderful thing but you could fill five glasses at once at the old trigger-filling Coke/Diet Coke/Fanta/7up/etc machines.

EDIT: I think this isn't quite the machine's we're on about but it's kind of related.

In terms of physical technology it may be arguable that there is less that can go wrong with a touchscreen (although I would still debate this!) but it's a huge increase in software risk between a simple solution that just manages input from buttons to a full integrated system with GUI, video and audio playback, touch interface etc.

Additionally the machine becomes more difficult to repair/service - one of the buttons not working on the old school style machine? An engineer can come out to look at it and probably fix it, if something goes wrong with the new touch screen system then it's more likely to require a more costly fix.

In terms of the power consumption issue - yes a modern touchscreen display is not going to be drawing too much power, but it's still more than not having one! Especially as in this case it is on all the time.

It just annoys me as it feels so pointless!

You're right about all of that.

Although touch screens can be used to control things on a very very low firmware level too, their benefit is they are highly customisable so that's rarely the case.

The worst thing is when they're poorly calibrated. strawberry floating press the button I just pressed not that one :x

Oh yeah - a poorly calibrated touch screen is a thing of nightmares!

Likewise when systems link a touchscreen to a slow back-end, many self scan checkouts are guilty of this. The frustration of not knowing if it hasn't registered your press, or if it has registered it but just hasn't responded yet? And then just when you are sure it hadn't registered and you go to press it again it moves to another screen and you end up pressing on something else!

I generally hate them but I'm still polite enough to say "goodbye" back to self service machines.

You do know that there are tiny people inside them don't you?

Just like Wolfgang von Kempelen's 'Mechanical Turk'.

That's how they actually work.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

I'm afraid it's not a reference, I actually do it.

I'm sooooo ironic.

It's funny you should mention that because there are actually billions of miniature gigs on the Internet for people to do like that, it's even called Mechanical Turk: https://www.mturk.com/

I thought this was a reference to the bus driver conversation

My latest annoyance has been buying my first acoustic guitar, getting it, realising sounds beautiful but it plays like total gooseberry fool. Action is ridiculously high to the point where it is difficult doing chords. Gonna have to get this strawberry floater set up.

The thing that has really been annoying me lately is flying insects, every single night for the past couple of weeks I have had to go on a killing spree in my bedroom before sleeping because as soon as I lay down and look at my iPhone I can hear buzz buzz buzz buzz, so I get up, turn on the torch and hunt them down,
