[Rules p.1] Things that annoy you guys. 100 percent. Not gonna lie

Trying to navigate the massive roundabout on my way into work this morning...the perfect storm of too many cars, badly laid out roads and uneven traffic light timings. The result was cars piling up at one set of lights, the other lights changing and letting more cars through before the first set had changed, and gormless people driving into a yellow box despite there being nowhere for them to go, and then looking around baffled wondering why more cars are heading their way and they're stuck in the middle of the strawberry floating road blocking everyone else and causing more queues.

Also, some twat who gave me the finger and flashed his lights because I followed the road markings and he didn't understand how lane discipline works.

That annoys me so much when I am driving. If I cut somebody up I try and be as apologetic as possible, other people seem to fly into a rage that you dared to follow the rules of the road when they are ignoring them.

Letting people out of a junction and them not even acknowledging the good deed. I had this guy just glare at me when I let him out last night. I did not need to do that, you utter twat.

Used to happen all the time On the motorway commute i used to do, with a large roundabout connecting several motorways. 3 lanes waiting to get on, I'm in the middle, the lanes are then continued by cats eye type flat metal squares to show the lanes before they merge in to the white lines on the roundabout itself. So many times someone would be to my right and then just straight line it across the front of me in to my lane for no reason and without looking. Once someone was alongside as we joined then then just went straight, looked at me, wildly veered away back to his own lane and then shouted banana split out of his window at me.

Lane etiquette is a dying thing I think, people just do not seem to give a single strawberry float these days.

My current commute takes me off the M5 south at junction 16, there is then a stretch of about 300 yards where you have to merge with the traffic which has just come off the M4 at junction 15 in order to get off. So at this point you've got 4 lanes of traffic where the people on the right most lane are wanting to get to the left, and the people on the left are wanting to get to the right, all at ~60MPH.

So in this tricky scenario do people drive sensibly, sticking to their lane and only moving once they have indicated and confirmed that there is room to move safely? No of course the strawberry floating don't! They just swing their cars over any bloody lane they want with no indication regardless of whatever else is around them!

Then after this the traffic exiting the motorway approaches a roundabout where the lanes all have a kind of jig to the left in them, see detailed schematic below:



Rather than following their lane everyone in lane 1 seems to think they can just carry on driving straight and end up in lane 2 without ever indicating or checking if there is anyone there!

All this talk of motorways and lane changing fuckwits is why I hate driving. I came to it late (Only passed my test two years ago at 33) and I've never been comfortable with it. The Motorway terrifies me and if I'm not driving somewhere I'm used to I'm a nervous wreck. I know it's a confidence thing and it'll get better the more I do it, but I actively avoid driving when I possibly can.

Yeah with more time you will gain confidence but I can understand the feeling of terror that the motorway gives you.

Like all forms of driving the struggle is that your safety relies just as much on everyone around you behaving sensibly as it does on your own actions, on the motorway the stakes are obviously much higher because of the speed and density of traffic around you.

I passed my test at 18 but didn't drive at all during university so wasn't in the best practice when I next started driving around 3 years later. Pretty much the first thing I did when getting back in the car was try and drive most of the length of the M4 from Cardiff to London. I rear ended a Vauxhall Zafira just as we were about to get on the M25. I was terrified of the motorway for a while after that but made a conscious effort to keep going on it as I knew I had to get used to it.

The motorway is the easiest place to drive. Other than junctions, you can only go in a straight line. There are no crossroads, roundabouts, traffic lights, cyclists, pedestrians or tiny country lanes. Sure it’s faster than a lot of other roads, but if you stick to the inside lane then you don’t have to go too fast.

The main trouble with motorway driving is boredom.

Totally agree with both of you. It's absolutely a confidence thing and even when I'm on the motorway as a passenger I can see that it's fairly straightforward. Hopefully it'll get better over time.
My main issue is that the occasions where I "need" to drive are fairly rare. I get the train to work and everything at home is within walking distance.

Just need to force myself into it more I think.

My wife is the same. She passed her test and then seemed to lose all confidence with driving. She has only ever driven on the motorway once and that was just the M32, which is only a few miles long.

She hasn’t bothered driving for years now and her confidence to be able to drive has just gotten worse and worse.

Definitely try and force yourself out in the car more often, you will only gain confidence by doing it.

One of my friends passed her test in her early 20s but never really drove much because she was nervous and intimidated by it (not sure how she passed the test ). She probably drove a handful of times until she was in her 30s and had a child, and then she had to drive on occasions, and a lot more than she'd ever done in the past. And it's strawberry floating terrifying being in the car with her. There are arrogant/aggressive drivers, and then there are timid/unconfident/nervous drivers, and I know who I'd rather be a passenger with.

I have a roundabout near where I live and people love to be in the wrong lane to save time, normally entering on the inside lane (two lanes enter) to take the third exit. I'm not sure if people generally don't understand which lane to be in (even though the outside lane states which turn off it is for) or they are fuckshites who have no intention of getting in the correct lane.

If you can do it without bothering someone else I don't have an issue, but when they cut in making someone in the correct lane have to brake it is a different matter.

Someone down my road passed their test recently and it takes her 10 minutes to park. How she passed, I have no idea.

i had the same experience where i passed my test but then didnt drive and got very scared of driving because i didnt need to.
so i took some more lessons (i think 4-6?) and then i booked a hire car every weekend for 1-2 hours to just keep in practice.
now i dont enjoy driving but im a lot more confident and able to drop things off or pick things up if needed.

I passed my test first time at 18 and I now haven't driven at all in about 5 years B)

You live in Reading though, which is a horrible place to drive, so I can understand it.
The road layout in the centre is utterly baffling, so poorly designed.

Didn't they drop parallel parking from the test?

How bad some people seem to be at manoeuvres like reverse parking and parallel parking always frustrates me. It's a simple, repeatable motion, just strawberry floating learn how to do it!

The people who cannot seem to fathom the effect of reversing on the nature of turning also really gets to me.

The IDR is just a wannabe Coventry ring road.

Reading could probably solve most of its traffic problems by concreting over the Thames. We already have the Kennet, we don't need 2 rivers.

I never quite got the hang of parallel parking when I was learning, and it didn't come up on my test, so naturally I spent a good while avoiding it like the plague, lest I make a pig's ear of it.

A friend walked me through it properly a couple of years ago, and now with the help of my new car's parking sensors, I can park in spaces tighter than a duck's arse.
