So on collection, it is £32. When I get home, a quick check online shows that you can buy it for under £6

I think this particular vet is profiting by around £26.

Minus the cost the prescription as that would be part of that and the vet probably pays more talhan 6 quid for the drugs in the first place as can't buy in massive bulk.

There is some stuff where the wife works that the vets have to pay nearly double what the on line peeps sell for wholesale because they can't buy in as big bulk.
Maybe they should buy online. Could probably then get a Ferrari rather than having to rough it out with an R8.

What the vet does with their pay is their business, vet pay is pretty standard across the country and they could have other business investments etc. just because the VET is doing well for themselves doesn't the "VETRENARY PRACTICE" is.
I'm not going to discuss this as there isn't any point but it all costs money to have a surgery, staff, stock etc. it costs money, if you dont like it dont have pets, but for the most part they aren't jacking prices for their own gain.
If you read what I said, you will see it is the practice owner (who is also a vet). I don't disagree that they shouldn't do what they want with their money, just disagree that the mark up isn't as much as I think it is.

I might be wrong but the way I'm reading it is you walked through a front of house with a fascia probably marked "VET" or suchlike, asked for advice, had your pet seen to, and now are annoyed you were charged for some further words of reassurance and common sense with the tool you needed to treat the pet. A prescription is the same thing in a different form, it's a statement saying this drug is going to be used properly in a certain amount and administered in a certain way that doesn't kill the pet and you can do that to obtain drugs requiring a superscription like strong antibiotics or painkillers for example. Otherwise anyone can just buy 1000mm of tranquillisers and get high or kill themself or their pet. You pay for that authorisation.

The point is that a qualified vet considered your options and decided what the best course of actions were in your circumstances, a decision you no longer have to make yourself and potentially miss something serious or do something dumb, not saying you're an idiot or anything, but some people are. Likewise googling for some advice or asking nan who had a dog once isn't the same as asking a vet for their professional opinion. You've got what you needed with authority and from a trusted source of medical supplies, not some website that may not even be licensed to distribute drugs or have clean sterile practices, secure supply line etc. This also pays for things like their practice license and staff training which is expensive. If anyone just got asked btw I need painkillers, "OK" and went online to buy the drugs they would never make money as most animals do not need complex surgeries and just patching up or physio or drugs etc. It's a service industry, service charges will be put everywhere.

You must do this all the time in IT with people trying to get a free lunch, the industry isn't relevant. There's a markup on everything that is the service aspect of the trade.

And yeah you can't buy most drugs online without a prescription, even for pets, because they also affect humans, but also because people are thick and overdose their pets.

fwiw I got a prescription as part of a consultation, the drug cost nothing and worked out at about £27 for consultation/prescription/drug all in one. I don't think that's unreasonable. And my pet made a full recovery.

Not having a go that's just my take on why vets are seemingly expensive compared to buying paracetamol at tescos and grinding into into some kind of cocaine like treat. I also had to stomach prescription fees when I truly have sod all money but I ended up convinced it was for the best.

My point was, there was no consultation (the pain killers were discussed in a previous consultation) and they have been prescribed and used before. This is pretty much standard dog painkiller which is relatively cheap, but impossible to get access to without the vet's say so, at which point the cost goes through the roof.

Either way there is another prescription involved which is a chunk of the cost i think our vets charges £12 for a prescrpition. They also probably pay more than that online place initially themselves because of having to go via wholesalers etc.
Your best bet is to get the prescription from them and then buy online, assuming you can wait for delivery etc.
Vets always cost more because there is more overheads involved, not just in that transaction but in general in the practice and all the prices go into that so it brings the price up.
Generally the vets are good people and genuinely care about the animals first, but they have to make money to stay in business as they are private businesses its the same as fi we had private healthcare, the costs would be high for healthcare because there are layers of margin and staff and gooseberry fool, not because they want to take all your money but because gooseberry fool costs that much.

It’s fine as long as you make sure you blow the smoke into the kids face. It toughens them up and gives them stronger lungs.

It still upsets me breathing my mum's smoke, doesn't smoke so much but does so in a small room and it's strawberry floating acrid, and bad evocations, cigarettes are horrible.

I don't like smokers full stop. When I see them out pushing a pram, my blood boils so I try not to think about it.

They are I find a massively selfish people, like it's fine for them to drop the fat end, or smoke in a crowded street, or fill pub doors ways, take extra breaks at work etc.

It's incredible the gooseberry fool they get away with.

There does seem to be an attitude that smoking breaks are an additional right on top of any existing break allowance, which always annoyed me at my last workplace. Literally every hour the smokers would take a 10 minute break, on top of the break allowance the rest of us got.
Not to mention the second e-cigarettes came along everyone thought it was perfectly fine to use them in the office and in every no smoking area known to man.

There was a cock who used to puff away in the auditorium at a theatre I volunteered at during shows!

Yeah, our HR department had to start threatening Gross Misconduct, so instant dismissal, for anyone who used them in the office to get people to stop.

This annoys the hell out of me, because it reduces the amount people we have covering phones, and then we get torn apart for not taking enough calls. But no one ever attributes it to smoke breaks weirdly enough.

Pet peeve of the day, getting a lot of sleep but still feeling knackered. Last night was one of rare nights where I sleep the whole way through, and I was wrecked when I woke up.

Waking up at the wrong point in the sleep cycle is a bitch.
