Current annoyance - web pages that jump the strawberry float around as images are loading! I have fairly shitty internet at home so any decent web page with images on will still take a while to load up - so when I'm happily going ahead reading the text it keeps jumping down as each of the images slowly plops in, strawberry floating driving me nuts! Seriously can we not agree on a system whereby the size and location of everything is predefined so that this gooseberry fool doesn't happen? Just put a placeholder square or something where the image should be until it loads!

Sites with google amp markup do this by loading pages non-linearly: https://www.ampproject.org/

Change your useragent to a mobile one to spoof those sites into delivering amp-accelerated pages:

I often find mobile versions of site help with this problem because they aren't as full of pointless gooseberry fool.

I've used Evernote Clearly for Firefox for years although it's not supported anymore so you have to download it from elsewhere: http://download.cnet.com/Evernote-Clear ... 05658.html

The lorry that decided to pull in to the fast lane of the motorway to overtake 2 others as the slow lane split off to a roundabout, instead of just waiting until it became 3 lanes again. Yeah that's great we'll all just slam our brakes on and pootle along at 50 while you finish your 2 mile overtaking manoeuvre. banana split.

Happened to me on a brand new set of twin IPS displays and drove me nuts. Especially since I was the one that purchased them.

Thanks for those. I'm aware of various workarounds and approaches to mitigate the problem, it just feels like something that should be a core part of the browsing experience by now!

Bastards.

I have resigned myself to being an internet povo for the foreseeable future, it seems nobody has any interest in getting fibre to our area so I'm stuck on 3-4Mbps

If you're not using an ad blocker/No Script how many Sky Sports adverts you're now bombarded with on YouTube.

The previous place I lived was like this. I now have like ten times that. It would be hard to go back.

As a web developer I agre, 4mbps should be plenty of bandwidth to load a website although massive javascript libraries are largely to blame with ads etc meaning pages easily run into the megabytes without even loading any content, just interactive things and buttons etc etc

It's partly because almost no-one actually writes websites anymore and relies on frameworks when they only use 5% of the functionality of that framework and load the entire thing for the end user.

You can blame devs being rushed and corporates not caring about user experience.

The sites I used to make when I was a teenager load imperceptibly fast nowadays and that's because they used almost no javascript and the CSS was minimal.

I liked the thread title when it was 'Things that u annoy...'

It was a weird guilty pleasure.

Now it's some kind of Die Hard/Terminator mashup with uncouth capital lettering. :x

I do! I live in Cheltenham - it's no big city but it's not exactly the back of beyond either. I blame GCHQ for sucking up all the bandwidth!

Squinty wrote:The previous place I lived was like this. I now have like ten times that. It would be hard to go back.

That's the annoying thing - I use quicker internet all day at work and pretty much everyone who I visit has a faster speed - it's genuinely quite depressing to return home to this kind of service. I have been known to 'borrow' the internet of friends and relatives in order to download stuff, only small things like phone app updates etc. and once when I downloaded all 80GB of DOOM at a friends house! :shifty:

I remember having faster internet than this about 10 years ago, it's a joke!

Yeah I've seen this a lot at work - I was looking at some code that had been put together for a web UI using React, node etc. and the amount of superfluous junk that seemed to have been bundled in was crazy!

I was once picked out to develop what appeared to amount to really just websites.. but written in Angular.js. Visited the agency's website (that appeared to be just 2 people) and it as just loads of animated bullshit.

So really what they wanted was some pointless whiz bang stuff, why the strawberry float it had to be written in a javascript framework I had no idea. I turned it down because I would have had to learn an entire framework in 1 week for ultimately no reason (other than money, but there's more important things). It's just a colossal waste of life, I don't care how much money they have, that's a bad client right there who is selling bullshit.

i hate modern websites. its very rare that an intensive graphic heavy website actually looks any good, but they're all slow and unresponsive to load because they want animated adverts and banners at every angle and pointless 'have your say' boxes and interactive bits.
i wish we still had geocities HTML style websites, theyre such bliss to use when they randomly crop up (everyone having moved onto the aforementioned bloated shite because they want to keep up with everyone else).
e.g. Maddox's website: http://maddox.xmission.com/ just a beautiful thing to use

People who know they can't handle their drink but who proceed to over drink anyway. Making a fool out of themselves and causing trouble for others who have to help them sober up.

How do you deal with these people? They are grown ups and I don't think shouting at them can solve the problem. They never learn and continue to get drunk and go crazy.

The best way to deal with them is to give them a space cake so that they chill out.

This is the worst.

Modern web design in general is just terrible. I get they want to appease mobile users, but I want my information readily available not hidden behind 12 menus.
