Looking at some hotels in New York in December and the latest trick they seem to be pulling is showing the big price, but then little grey text elsewhere saying "VAT not included"

strawberry floating seriously? Not putting the VAT into the headline price now? On a website clearly aimed at consumers rather than businesses? strawberry float off with that gooseberry fool.

lmao just wait until you get to New York and discover nothing has sales tax included in the price

I will never ever understand why they do that in America. No matter how many times I've been it always catches me out.

Freedom burger only $10!

One freedom burger please.

With tax Freedom burger is $14.56

Add the compulsory tip...

Freedom burger is really $21

IT'S NOT $10 THEN IS IT?!

Some places in the US include tax in the price, like in Michigan.

Sadly here in Canadaland don't :x

Well except for gas, thank God.

Isn't it because different states have different sales taxes, so it's a nightmare for any firm that might trade in more than one state to include tax on their pricing materials?

Pain in the neck.

Actual pain in the neck I mean, I have woken up this morning and can barely turn my head to the right as I have obviously cricked it in the night. :x

And now writing that means I have the Genie in my head saying “ten thousand years can give you such a crick in the neck”.

That explains why ads and press releases show the pre tax prices but not why the individual outlets do it. If the menu/sign/sticker says $5 then that should be the price I pay, not the starting price for me to add tax and tip on top of.

Yeah individual stores print their own price labels so they could easily print ones that include the local tax.
You'd think everyone in America would be a maths genius with having to work out additional percentages all the time.

I think that’s the main reason they give, but it sounds like bollocks to me. I can’t imagine Wal:Mart (for example) sell the same goods at the same price in every single state. And each store would be printing out their own price labels anyway.

It’s just one of those odd American quirks that they are so used to that they no longer see how strange it is to people from other countries (see tipping and health care for other examples).

I could never understand it at mad catz when talking to the US team and they would say a mouse/headset etc needed to hit a certain price point.

"It needs to come in at $60 retail which is that real sweet spot retailers love"

But then it would be in the shops everywhere for $75, yet they'd still refer to it as a $60 mouse. Baffling.

I'm in two minds about it, in this country tips should always be optional but in a country like the USA which afaik doesn't have a national minimum wage then its a little more acceptable as tips often make up a substantial percentage of a waiter/waitresses income.

My issue with tipping in the USA is that it's become an expectation to just get a tip naturally, all the incentive to 'earn' the tip by providing service above and beyond the norm has been removed.

I was told a while back that you can refuse to pay service charges tacked onto your restaurants bill here. Has anyone done or tried this?

The US has a minimum wage, but certain service jobs are paid less, because there's an expectation that tips will cover the difference, and so for some reason that's OK.

The American federal government requires a wage of at least $2.13 per hour be paid to employees that receive at least $30 per month in tips. If wages and tips do not equal the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour during any week, the employer is required to increase cash wages to compensate.

In the UK? Yes, I insisted on the service charge on my bill being removed at Meat Liquor in Leeds. They didn't bother bringing my drink until my food was ready, then once my food did arrive I was just left alone, couldn't order another drink despite wanting one. When I was done I had to leave my table and seek out someone to ask for my bill, then it turned up with a 10% Service Charge added on. Told them right away to take that gooseberry fool off, there was no way they were getting an additional penny after that.

Yeah, I've been to a restaurant and done that. Group of us were there, we paid for the food, not the service charge. They weren't happy at all, but then, we weren't happy with the service. The woman was pretty obnoxious in all honesty. Kept on trying to get us out of the place. It wasn't even busy. Place closed a few months after that.

That’s the argument the Americans use for it, but it would be fair simpler to just pay their staff properly.

Sure the price on the menu would go up, but I would far rather see the actual price I have to pay than have to strawberry float around working out a tip later on.

The Americans seem happy with their system though so I don’t expect it to ever change.

Moggy I've had that very discussion with a few yanks while over there. Get accused of not ever tipping because 'you're Brits and you never tip', point out we always give the suggested 15% and usually over if there was actual service given. They seem to think we're utter banana splits for only.tipping for good service here but they can't wrap their heads around that restaurants etc pay their staff properly so they go home with decent enough money anyway.

"But she has to wash your dishes when you leave you asshole", yeah, and she gets paid for it. American restaurants must make such obscene money because they charge a load for their food and drink yet expect the customer to pay the staff wages on top of the bill via tips.

Twats.
