Use by dates.

Was buying some food in Marks & Spencers today and almost everything had a use by date of Saturday at the latest.
Yeah great that food has less salt and preservatives in so it's all healthier, but I hate having to go out to buy fresh food every 2-3 days rather than being able to just get one big shop per week.

Use by dates are advisory and usually arbitrary, stored properly most foods will last well beyond the date printed on the package, especially when unopened. Use your senses when judging if food can be eaten or not, dont be slave to the label.

I guess it depends what you're buying, but isn't most of it freezable? You could also try cooking it and then sticking it in the freezer.

For things like bread and milk I tend to go right to the back, even if I have to remove 20 pints of milk to get there. Picked up milk today in Sainsbury's that's good until the 22nd.

Don't confuse "use by" with "best before".

Use by dates are also often cautionary by up to several days.

Crank the fridge up or freeze it. Or just eat it. Or cook.

How did anyone live just a few decades ago I have no idea. My partner and I can live off a beef joint for an entire week.

Imo if you do your regular shop at M&S that's your fault for choosing incredibly wasteful products.

Marks and Spencers is basically a take away anyway, isn't everything geared towards expensive convenience foods and the majority thrown away? The margins are so huge it doesn't matter and the amount of plastic is atrocious. I feel bad every time I shop there, it's like a giant Pret a Manger with more plastic, a giant refridgerated Easter egg of convenience store.

Buy some potatoes brother.

I've only really been to the small, or really big, flat sort of ones, I think I've seen one massive one by a main road once, is that like a Tesco or Sainsbury's equivalent? It was made of strawberry floating glass, a crystal palace.

Truthfully M&S is so expensive for almost everyone I don't think they expect anyone to go every 3 days. I've picked up lunch a few times and that's it. I was handed down a suit from M&S and that felt rich.

Best thing ever when cooking for one - chest freezer. I have SO many nice meals prepped. Takes one afternoon of cooking to sort out one or two of my meals per day for about a month.

Most stuff lasts way way past its use by, stop being part of the food waste problem.

Mate people used to literally leave meat on a counter and rub with with salt, lasts for days. Maybe not in summer.

The reason supermarket food doesn't last as long as it should is that it isn't fresh at all.. it's weeks old by the time it gets to you.

Not that I'm any better, I just moved next to a butcher's, the only one left in town I think. They'll tell you when and where the animal was slaughtered and how long they've had it. If you want a fresh cut, they'll go out back, grab a literal whole animal and slice it up for you there and then. lovely.

As for today's annoyance, designers who hand over brand colour guidelines, with CMYK references, in a PDF, in RGB colour space. Meaning when you print it, the colours are literally wrong and rendering it useless for proofing. strawberry floating thing doesn't even have a colour profile assigned so who knows what they think it looks like on their screen.

The typed out CMYK values don't even match what the swatch actually is, for strawberry float's sake!

This is for a restaurant with menus and signs and everything, it's not like they're never going to print anything, this isn't a digital brand.

Only Ad probably understands what I'm talking about.

I bet they don't know what a pantone is either.

Then portion what you buy and freeze it.

That sounds a bit cruel, they could at least kill the animal before slicing bits off.

The bits grow back. That is why it is perfectly fine not to be a vegetarian, vegetarians just won't accept this truth.

This is why lizards are superior.

(Fact note, not all species can regrow their tails, it's extremely draining on nutrients, is made of bone marrow and not actual bone and a only a some species of newt can grow other bits. Just in case anyone was thinking of an endless meat supply model.)

Some banana splits have fly tipped some concrete right in the middle of an area that people park there cars next to a big heath that people walk there dogs. They couldn't put it to one side so that it wouldn't be that much of an inconvenience, just right in the strawberry floating middle. It's a beautiful area that is being spoiled by these lazy, inconsiderate arseholes.

Unfortunately the people who do this tend to not have any fixed abode and have done the job as a back hander so there will be no comeuppance allowing this culture of making no contributions to society but expecting it to clear up your waste will carry on.

Sounds like they left some concrete evidence though.
