It is exactly that. A bad downmix from 5.1 means you just take the left and right front stereo channels and ignore the centre speech channel which is where literally ALL speech goes in a 5.1 mix. This means you have everything else bloody loud and barely audible speech.

So it's either your TV or your AV receiver's fault. Try setting your device's output to stereo (such as ps4 or whatever) or TV if it is receiving optical or SPDIF input. If you are using an AV receiver make sure that the sound setting is set to Stereo so that it is sending the right audio mix to the TV. And you might sometimes have to select that option in the streaming service or DVD or game as well.

I find it most noticeable when annoyingly VLC will set to 5.1 by default when playing a source with 5.1 (e.g. ripped DVD) even when the OS isn't set up that way, so you have to select the Dolby Digital 2.0 option manually every time.

Older 5.1 mixes were more sympathetic to still the majority of people being on stereo devices so the issue wasn't as bad.

However if the original feature was in 5.1 audio and there was some stereo mix but was lost or not used or never existed (unlikely), a streaming service or rip or whatever might have badly downmixed from 5.1 instead of using the stereo stream and then strawberry floated it up by not including enough of the centre channel in the stereo mix. In which case you're strawberry floated.

Hey I'm a responsible adult and I pay all my own bills these days.

Except for my full Sky TV package. Work pays for that.

Temporary bosses. :x

My manager is on maternity leave and a team member has been given temporary charge while the real manager is off.

He is obviously trying to prove himself to the higher up bosses, he’s just kicked off with somebody that asked for a half day on Thursday. “You have to give a weeks notice! I’ll let it go this once because we have a full team that day!”.

Funny that he didn’t seem to care about that when he decided to “work” from home last week without telling any of us....

That’s pretty much his attitude. It’ll bite him on the ass when we are asked to review him in a few months.

Ah it really grinds my gears when superiors don't show up and and apparently you don't need to know, sometimes days at a time.

"No shows" in general are annoying - be they bosses, team members or customers/clients.

We were supposed to be having a meeting with one of our clients recently - a bunch of prep work had been done over the last few days, we had all arranged our schedules to fit the meeting, rooms had been booked and so on. Then I come in on the morning of the meeting to an email from them saying basically "Yeah soz I'm not going to there, I'm doing something else now"!!

I get that things can change last minute, or that events sometimes get out of control that results in plans needing to change, but this wasn't the case here. The client had known they weren't going to be here for about a week and just didn't tell us until this morning - "Not sure if the information has made its way to you". No it hadn't made its way to me, one way to guarantee that it had would have been to strawberry floating tell me that yourself in the first place!

Simple solution to this

Charge for the missed meeting and put that in terms and conditions or whatever
Charge more money generally so people don't waste your time as much

And while it can make it a little more difficult to be competitive, depending on how you tot up the risk/reward, don't offer free consultations, just do all that shiz online and pre qualify all leads before booking further engagement with them. You don't need to give time away for clients to um and ah about what they don't know if they need x or y, focus on the ones that already know what they want. If they don't know what they want, charge them to help figure out what they need or want. And at that point, wasting time and money starts to look more expensive than upholding basic courtesy.

Yeah there are ways to mitigate these things, I suspect we do have clauses relevant to this situation in our contract (I try to stick out of that side of things as much as possible  ) but it doesn't stop it being annoying.

It's more the complete lack of professionalism and common courtesy of it that annoys. Fortunately the prep work we have done won't go to waste it will just have to wait until we re-arrange the meeting.

Just send them a gooseberry fool load of automated reminders, they can hardly blame you for it.
