I guess you could classify lots of groups like that, but the difference here is that British (and Irish) law define them as ethnic groups.

Sorry, I didn't see the 'don't' in that sentence. Apologies for things getting heated, it's just hard to accept being the bad guy when you've been on the receiving end is some of the negative aspects of certain traveller communities.

I wasn’t trying to make you a bad guy. This only started when after a page or two of anti-gypsy comments (from quite a few members), I posted that I didn’t have a problem with them as a whole and then you jumped on me. I understand if you have had negative experiences that it will cloud your judgement towards a group, but I just can’t read pages of stuff like this without saying something.

I don’t think demonising a whole group (other than Tories ;) ) helps in anyway to solve any problems. Calling them all disgusting is not a way to move forward as you’ll be helping to spread hatred towards any decent people of the group and the group itself will instantly be on the defensive. I genuinely think a lot (but by no means all!) of problems that travellers cause comes from the abuse directed towards them. Constantly being told you are scum, being barred from pubs because of your ethnicity or having communities hate you before anything has happened is not a way to improve a groups social nature.

But, I also agree that there are major problems with the traveller community that are caused by the travellers themselves. Like I said, the lifestyle of moving around is going to lead to problems by its very nature – it’s easy to leave lots of litter and junk if you are moving somewhere miles away – it’s easy to be a thief if you are constantly on the move etc etc.

In 11 years of dealing with the travelling community through my work I haven't yet met one who hasn't lied or caused trouble. This goes for the men, women and children. Whenever I meet a member of the travelling community I give them the benefit of doubt and a clean slate but they always seem to disappoint. They are usually very polite when they first meet you. Say Sir and thank you all lot. Give you lots of false compliments. However crime and antisocial behaviour increases when they are in the area.

When they first pull up and make a new encampment they instantly lie to you about their reasons and length of stay. The kids run riot over local leisure facilties. The adults steal from shops and houses. They Leave restaurants without paying in dispute over hair or glass in their food, or even say that it was disgusting after eating the entire plate and refusing to pay.

In my view their culture and society doesn't fit in with ours. It's very different in the sense that cultures of many countries around the world widely differ from others. They are in a sense their own country drifting around ours. The kids are rarely educated to any level, they then become adults and the cycle continues. It's their way of life. I don't think they do it because they are bad people at heart, they seem to have a lot of values, they are just different.

I have however known a few former travellers usually women who have in their words escaped that style of life. They genuinely try to fit in with the rest of society and make changes to adapt.

Some of the women have absolutely cracking sets of Wally John Blacks on them, so there is that redeeming feature.

Maybe they're worth saving after all...

I used to deal with them a lot in a previous job. They were incredibly difficult people to deal with, for numerous reasons.

I don't think all of them are unsavoury. I probably should reiterate that. Personal experience is clouding my better judgement.

Current Annoyance: Deliveroo Drivers.

I think the ones in my area have all quit since you can now never order things. Damn people wanting decent wages and job security.

I want BBQ Pork Loin and Seasoned Fries for tea :(

People who ask for advice and then don’t listen to you.

A woman I work with does it all the time, but she just asked me what I would do about an individual person not appearing on a list of companies. I said I wouldn’t expect an individual to appear on a list of companies and so she could just continue with the transfer as we had the company name and the company was appearing on the list.

She flustered about this for ages and so to get rid of her I told her to ask our Business Risk department if she wanted to be 100%. She didn’t do this but instead asked somebody else who basically told her the same thing as I did, although without the sarcastic suggestion of bothering Business Risk with a stupid strawberry floating question.

Finally she decides she doesn’t believe either of us and so then she emailed Business Risk who told her that an individual will not appear on a list of companies.

strawberry floating hell.

So, where can I get my drive tarmaced for cheap then? :shifty:

Anyway I'm annoyed with this strawberry floating Monarch collapse. The missus was asked to go on a 3-day sojourn to Lisbon from next Weds. It's a sales event where she won't be buying anything and just saying "No" to everything that everyone tries to sell her. But, it's a free trip with the sales event people allowing you to claim back your flight cost afterwards. Bonus!

Extra Bonus is spouses are allowed too so I'm booked to fly out to join her next Fri (13th :shifty: )and we're coming back Sunday 15th. Free weekend in Lisbon being the plan.

Problem is our return flight is/was with Monarch. Of course we can't use that now. Our outbound flights are with other airlines so we're in the position of being able to get to Lisbon knowing we can't get back.

Looking into our options we've got to this position:

- Travel agent wants us to pay for the new flights back and won't refund the Monarch ones. I say it's their job to replace the flight as our contract is through them. They don't appear to have any ATOL cover on the confirmation from Aug when we booked.
- Credit card company say travel agent should refund the Monarch portion. We can raise a disputed/chargeback if they refuse but no guarantees we'll get money back though.
- Missus has reached out to the sales event organiser to see if we can cancel. "Sure" they said. "It'll cost you £2k not to turn up"!
- looked for new flights. None available to return and land Sunday. We can have a 19hr return with a stopover getting home Monday lunchtime. Means an extra day off work and hassle sorting extended childcare and asking them to get my kids to school on time!
- alternative from sales event is to let my missus off attending the Friday and she can fly back, on a newly booked flight at her expense, on the Friday. I of course don't go in this scenario. But if I don't go, we write off £320 for my portion of the flights booked as the outbound flight is still able to be used.

strawberry floating nightmare. This freebie few days/weekend in Lisbon is going to cost us at least £250 as it stands and she doesn't even want to go!. There is no such thing as a freebie

Bastard airlines/travel agents

Tories as an ethnicity? What the hell am I reading

The idea that the rich and/or conservative ideologues (seeing as the rich may very well be socialist or or centrist or strawberry floating Buddhists) are somehow at risk of ethnic/minatory discrimination really makes me wonder what planet people are on.

Moggy wrote:People who ask for advice and then don’t listen to you.

I deal with this regularly in 3 scenarios

1. Customer requests solution, solution is offered at competitive price, customer changes mind about solution to the extent they needn't had sought services in the first place
2. Customer actually agrees to and pays for solution, then tells you your advice/solution is wrong and they don't want any help with it
3. Customer seeks out solution but can't make a decision to purchase, and so disappears for no reason after asking strings of mostly self-evident questions or ignoring information/answers previously given about the same thing

What it comes down to is a lack of conviction. I don't even mind if generally people make a weaker choice or delay or defer judgement on something, provided they're able to act at all. But ignoring or rejecting information that is clearly beneficial and given in good faith really annoys me.

People who have no sense of awareness, usually come out on Saturdays. They either walk ridiculously slowly, or stop/turn suddenly, or don't look where they are going and walk into people.
How they've made it this long without walking into traffic I don't know.
