Tea is mainly water and also I've read it is good for warding off Alzheimer's. I drink it just for the health benefits.

Wouldn't that much tea make your teeth yellow :dread:
They aren't perfectly white, a sort of ivory. But then I am 48 and have all my own teeth.

Yes?

I don't drink so this would be a breeze for me. However, if there was a similar charity event for tea drinking I think that would be a very difficult challenge for me.

I'm the same with coffee, I can't remember the last time I didn't have at least 2 cups per day.

It's energy drinks for me. I usually have one on the way to work and then another about halfway through the day.
I think I have a bit more of a problem. I drink a minimum of 5 teas a day, with 6 or 7 being average.

I am talking 500 ml cans here so most days I'm drinking a litre of energy drink which can't be good for me. I do make a slight concession by drinking only sugar free where possible so at least there aren't as many calories.

Is there any point drinking a sugar free energy drink?

Isn't the sugar where the energy comes from?

Nope, mega amounts of caffeine and other crap. I mean the sugar is probably the least of the worries like but still.

Some without sugar, like the white Monster can (whatever it's called), is laced with caffeine and vitamins so there are benefits there.

Drink too many or too fast though and you'll get heart palpitations, sweats, and it has been known to kill you off. A lethal concoction of too many vitamins and too much caffeine.

I tend to drink energy drinks about once per month.

I once saw a can of energy drink claim to have zero calories. How the strawberry float does that work?

...by being sugar free?

Many types of sweetener don't have calories. Most diet drinks therefore are calorie-free.

Somebody Else's Problem wrote:I once saw a can of energy drink claim to have zero calories. How the strawberry float does that work?

Your body can create hormones that make you feel tired or hungry, or other hormones that make you feel awake or alert. Energy drinks contain chemicals that either block up the receptors that tell your brain you have a lot of tiredness hormones, or over-stimulate the receptors that tell your brain you have a lot of alertness hormones. The feeling of wakefulness comes from this manipulation of the brain's sensors, rather than from sugar. ('Sugar rushes' are a very small effect - some scientists think a placebo entirely - compared to even mild stimulants like caffeine.)

I don't think any of this is 'bad' (at least in moderation) but that's how they work.

I used to drink them a fair bit when I worked 12 hour night shifts, I'd usually have 1 or 2 a night over 3 nights.

Now I only really have them as part of a Vodka Redbull or a Jeagerbomb.

But it's an energy drink and therefore you'd assume it would give you energy. Which it can't if it contains no calories.

Caffeine also has no calories itself, which is what's giving you the energy. See Karl's post above for an explanation from someone with more knowledge than I

I do 12 hour days and nights with a lengthy commute either side and have relied on energy drinks at times. They're pretty good as long as you don't mind completely ruining your sleep and occasionally waking up with loads of adrenaline. I really don't like the red bull flavour though, the punch or ice tea Monsters genuinely taste nice.

Just have a coffee from McDonald's now although I'm fairly sure the warm milk actually makes me more tired.
