I recall reading in EDGE a few years back that devs had the tech to prevent this kind of mess... I think it may have been regarding CryEngine. Clipping, tearing, whatever - it does kind of suggest that devs are being lazy.

The shot appears to only have just been shot out of the canon.

It's a single polygon that's automatically oriented to face the camera. The alternative is for it to not do that so you would see that it is a 2D plane. Not good.

A single polygon?! Why is it so hard to have the muzzle inside the muzzle-flash? You're all acting as though it's not possible? :?

This is one section of a game with millions of other sections it's not exactly a massive problem. If I was a programmer and the only problem with a game I've made was that the muzzle flash of a gun is not perfectly rendered I go down the pub and celebrate a job well done.

YOU'VE MADE A COMPLETELY UNREASONABLE AND VITRIOLIC SLIGHT ON GAME DEVELOPERS EVERYWHERE. WELL DONE! AS A REWARD FOR THIS MOST NOBLE OF ACHIEVEMENTS, YOU ARE BEING PRESENTED WITH AN OFFICIAL EIGHTHOURS-ENDORSED "KARLPROF CHALLENGE"!

YOUR CHALLENGE IS AS FOLLOWS

You're absolutely right. Particle effects in games, geometry-tied light-emulating effects in particular, are EASY AS strawberry float and could only be messed up by some kind of COMPLETE RETARD. Anyone in complete control of his cerebelum could code something as DOG gooseberry fool SIMPLE.

However, clearly the FUCKSHITS in the games development industry need to be shown HOW THIS STUFF WORKS, and I think of no-one better to do it than our resident GENIUS ALVIN FLUMMIX, YES THAT'S YOU!

>>> YOU HAVE TWO WEEKS TO COMPLETE YOUR BUGLESS PARTICLE EFFECTS MODULE FOR ANY WELL-KNOWN GAMES ENGINE. I suggest Source because of its inherent moddability. YOU MUST KEEP A DEVELOPMENT LOG ("DEVBLOG") AND DOCUMENT YOUR EFFORTS. This can be a thread in Creative Corner or a proper website. IF YOU FIND YOUR WORK IS IMPEDED BY BUGS IN THE ENGINE, YOU MUST FIX THESE BUGS, AS ANY HALF-WIT WITHOUT A 2-INCH THICK SKULL COULD OF COURSE DO. <<<

At the end of the two weeks a series of unit tests will be carried out by the forum's coders.

FAILURE TO COMPLETE THE EIGHTHOURS-ENDORSED "KARLPROF CHALLENGE" WILL RESULT IN A PERMENANT BAN FROM THE GRCADE FORUMS.

Hop to it!

Can I just copy and paste that for the next forfeit challenge?

Lighting effects should not go through guns/items/environments any more, especially not in promotional shots. Technology has long since advanced past that, or it should have, and they certainly shouldn't be using that crap in promo shots.

You won't notice that sort of thing when playing the game though, you can only really notice in screenshots.

You probably wouldn't use a screenshot of your only problem as publicity, though.

The marketing people strawberry floated up, not the developers.

Right?

Yeah, in fairness to Alvin, he is right on one point. It is a bit silly to use it as a publicity shot.

But we are talking about the game and I doubt 99.9% of customers will notice and even less would care even if you pointed this out to them.

Possible and practical are two different thing. Consider the volume of muzzle flashes in a first person shooter.

Press start during a smash bros match with flames and gooseberry fool flying around and move the camera around to observe - these effects are usually single 2D polygons (planes) with transparent texture mapped to them. Sometimes these polygons interject with other objects resulting in what you see in the screenshot. You would barely notice it during gameplay though.

The muzzle can't be inside the flash as the muzzle flash is just a 2D plane - there's nothing for the muzzle to fit into. The muzzleflash just floats in front of the muzzle.

To fix it you have to use volumetic particle effects and dynamic lighting, and that is very CPU intensive so usually devs don't bother to get better FPS. It's not lazy, it's a performance comprimise.
