Disclaimer: If am the only person who does this this will die quickly. (and I will look a bit weird)

As I expect like many of you, I spend a fair amount of time commuting each day. During this time (and sometimes during work time) I find myself thinking about what I was doing at this point of the year in a certain year. I think about lots of things but games is one of them.

Everyone likes reminiscing don't they? So I thought it would be worth seeing if a thread along these lines would work.

So as an example and to get us started:

This time (it's doesn't have to be an exact day) 14 years ago I got the original Xbox. I already had the PS2 (Pro evo machine) and Gamecube (main console) and hadn't really thought about getting an Xbox but my birthday is in August so needed a present. I knew you could get Champ Manager on it (didn't have a PC) so thought it would be worth it just to play that.

I got a bonus at the end of the August so got Halo, Wolfenstein, Rocky, Toejam & Earl and a Moto GP game. It quickly became my console of choice and here I am today soon to get my 6th Xbox console.

I am tempted to leave this thread so you look weird. ;)

This time 20 years ago, I sold my original Playstation to a mate (after warning him it only worked upside down  ) and was out of console gaming until the release of the PS2/Xbox a few years later. I was funding the purchase of my first car and was then busy driving around having fun!

11 years ago my first daughter was born so gaming took a back seat, as did everything else. Nearly 3 years later her sister was born.

Today we all play games together. Disney Infinity and the Lego games are very popular.

This time 11 years ago I was unlocking my first achievement. I've since done this a further 20,268 times.

Aw man, that post sure brought back some memories. Amazing times, despite getting the arse because I couldn't snake in F-Zero.

17 years ago I was killing time before starting Uni and had eagerly awaiting the launch of Perfect Dark (It was released in May 2000, but I thought it was closer to summer time). It was every bit as good as it was hyped up to be and I hammered it as best I could. I went to Uni feeling pretty damn confident in my abilities at the game, where I soon got soundly hammered by other people. It was the first time I really played with people who were as into games as I was. It was humbling. Still amazing times though.

EDIT: It was June. May was the US release which was so bloody annoying at the time.

This month ten years ago I got my Xbox 360 Elite and a copy of Bioshock. I was amazed by the fantastic opening in the game! Probably one of the most memorable "new console" experiences I have had.

So this is going better than expected.

26 years ago I had one of these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_64_Games_System

I spent the summer holidays in Bournemouth with an Aunt. When I wasn't swimming in the Channel I was playing games.

I'd had it for a while but hadn't got any new games for it so was still playing the 4 in one that in came with it - Flimbos Quest (classic) Fiendish Freddie's Big Top O Fun (a circus game), Klax (a Tetris/Columns type puzzle game) and International Football. That summer I got Batman (based on the movie of the time) and Navy Seals.

Completed both.

Still remember the Batman game quite well to this day. It only had 5 levels. The first and last were side scrolling type levels with you fought bad quys. The first was in the factory and ended with you pushing Jack Napier into the acid VAT to turn him into Joker. The last level was in the cathedral where you fought Joker at the end.

In between there was a Batmobile level were you used a cable to take sharp 90 degree turns, some sort of puzzle level were you had to match ingredients to find a cure and a Batwing level were you had to use the wings to cut strings of balloons filled with poison gas.

Don't remember much of Navy SEALS. Don't think it was very good.

:o . Wow, a C64 GS! There weren't many of them around, Ste!

Here's another event I recall... in August thirty (30!) years ago I got the Sega Master System at launch, along with Ghost House and My Hero. Amazing time  .

Probably why it was so hard finding games for it!

I also had similar problems when I had one of these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_XEGS

That was my first console. I got it for Xmas and it broke a few months later (it didn't sense when you moved the joystick to the left) and had already been discontinued so I couldn't get if fixed or replaced.

After a brief spell with an Atari 7800 I then got the C64.

30 years ago I discovered Gauntlet in an arcade in Saundersfoot in Wales while on a family holiday.

Think I spent all my pocket money that day...

The GS and the XEGS... man, you certainly picked some off-beat systems! Good to see that you ended up with the all-time best-ever system, though. The C64  .

I never played *that* many arcade machines, but I did love Gauntlet. "Don't shoot food!" .

I didn't pick them, bloody parents!

I wanted a NES like my friend but I think they thought the games were too expensive.

This time 15 years ago I'd just finished secondary school, the summer holidays were playing headers and volleys, trying to get drunk at weekend and a LOT of Pro Evo 2.

I don't think I've ever known a game so well, it must be what it's like you be really good at a fighting game when you know every possible move and you're trying to second guess what the other player will do. Zidane

One thing I remember is that despite being pretty good at free kicks I don't think I ever scored one with Beckham.

I had a C64 too (and I think a VIC 20 before that), but neither really hooked me on gaming.

That event was down to getting an Amiga 500 in I think 1990 or 91. Easily the best games system of all time.

27 years ago this summer I swapped my Atari 520STFM for a ticket to see Roger Waters perform The Wall on the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. Travel was included.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

We followed the same computing path, man :toot: . I did, quite briefly, use an Atari STe after the C64, but I switched back to Commodore with the A600 and then A1200.

I still go in that arcade. They used to have a brilliant X Men beat em up.
