Alvin posted this in the Chat thread but I think this news deserves its own thread

HD portage, followed by sequels maybe?

We may finally get a re-release of Timesplitters 2 in glorious HD!!

I've always been slightly puzzled by the praise people heap on TimeSplitters. It was a good series for sure, but the way that people talk about it - and TS2 in particular - makes it sound like some kind of revolution in gaming, which I never saw. TS1 had a poor single-player mode and good multiplayer, and TS2 improved on it with a decent single-player and a solid multiplayer, but neither were anything special for me. People always clamour for a sequel as well, seemingly forgetting about TS3. Still, positive news, would be good to see something come of it for all the fans out there that the series has. Not for me though.

I shall counter Lotus' post. TS2 remains the greatest FPS ever made and even a HD remake with an improved mapmaker would be an absolute must-buy for anyone whose primary criteria in videogames is enjoyment.

What made TS2 really special to me was the incredible depth of content both in singleplayer and in game modes and rule customisation for multiplayer. The variety on offer is still pretty much unsurpassed. The PS2 was the end of local dominated multiplayer, and from the the PS3 generation onwards local multiplayer almost disappeared in FPS games entirely, with bots disappearing alongside it. The content and customisation in FPS games has also reduced massively as we've seen a trend towards keeping online player count up and queue times down. This has led to favouring random or rotating maps with no host customisation of game rules, so we don't see anywhere near the same level of game options or game modes. It's becoming rare to get any singleplayer content at all now.

Good Lord :o

Glad to see THQ Nordic getting the ip unlike those fruitcakes at Crytek doing naff all with it.

Would love a new Timesplitters game but would be over the moon with a HD collection.

I was only talking about Timesplitters with my brother the other day. Spent countless hours playing mutiplayer back when I was in college as it really scratched that Goldeneye/Perfect Dark itch.

TS2

Had TS2 on GC and played the hell out of it for months/years! Fantastic game

Another bit of positive news, most of Free Radical (The devs on TS) are actually part of another studio owned by THQ Nordic!

I didn't click through the link, but are they even allowed to remaster/re-release/port the old games? Surely it's just the brand they have and not the old code.

Timesplits :x

I only played timesplitters 2 (and was too gooseberry fool with pad fps at the time to finish it) but it was good iirc.

I would go as far to say that Timesplitters was the best game on PS2 at launch, Timesplitters 2 the best FPS on the console full stop. In comparison I thought 3 was a disappointment.

3 was ok but 2 was always the superior game for sure.

THQ Nordic have actually built up quite a good catalog of IP’s now (they also have Darksiders plus that new Biomutant which looks good)

I always wanted to like TimeSplitters 2 more than I actually did. It was a solid game no doubt, and there was lots of fun to be had in the multiplayer, but it never grabbed me in the way that it obviously did for others.

I think it marked part of the awkward "growing pains" stage for console FPS games where they had made good strides from the PS1/N64 days but still hadn't quite nailed how to make it feel great on a controller.

We played lots of the multiplayer at uni (once we shelled out for a multitap - thanks Sony! :x ) but it got less and less play time once we moved on to Halo

I'll take Timesplitters 4 on Switch please.

TS2 > TSFP

However, TSFP Story Mode > TS2 Story Mode by a looooong way.
