Evening

Has anyone here emigrated before, looked to do so, changed mind or didn't quite have the courage?

Me and the wife have just started talking to a migration agent about moving to Australia. (IE we have all the forms and the next step is to fill them in and pay the initial 1/3 fee)

Based on my wifes job as a community work we can do the below
459 visa for 4 years so this is a temporary visa
After two years we can apply for permeant residency as long as one of has worked for one year on 35 hours or more per week
Will have to live in South Austrlia as as it is a skilled regional visa - Will go Adelaide as we have been before and seems a nice place and we liked it when we visited
You don't have to work in your specific skill

I'm all up for the adventure, doing something new but at the same time it scares the hell out of us as neither of us are risk takers so it goes against every natural instinct.

We have not told parents yet
I'm 34 and my wife is 30 so we are good ages
We don't have children
We own our own home and it is our pefect house and we would need to sell it to fund the adventure.
Wife hates her job
I like mine but it is stressful and I don't see it as long term secure (work in mortgages)
We have a good life, decent income, but if we don't try it will definitly be a later life regret

So we do feel in a way if we go we are literally giving up everything, decent standard of living, nice house, friends, family, basically the way we live our lives to go and try something new for what we think we will like but we don't want to come home with our tails between our legs and then starting again!!!

We have been to Australia befoe and we love it, been all over, the lifestyle would be great, weather briliant but to start all over again and build up a new life from scratch in a new country is a massive gamble that could backfire.

Anyway I need to vent, see peoples thought and opinions and if we proceed will keep you all updated on the (mis)adventure :-)

As long as you're prepared to fight at least level 40 spiders then you should be good. What's your current XP level?

I wanted to do this but didn't want to leave my parents. Now they have passed away I am too old (I think you need to be under 45) so I would need to buy a business. That is possible, but my son would not emigrate with us and I would not want to be so far away from him. So my opportunity has passed.

If you can do this though I would definitely go for it.

Yes?

I lived in Australia for 2 years from 2014-16 and strawberry floating loved it. The only reason I came back was because I couldn't get a sponsored visa in time.

Also i just emigrated to France, so there's that.

strawberry floating do it.

If you've been over before and liked it then sure, go for it. Wasn't the biggest fan of Australia personally.

Love it, and if someone said that to me then that would be my response without thinking about it!

Can't argue with that, completely think brexit is going to screw over this country and I don't want to be here when gooseberry fool hits the fan.

What did you like about it so much that you felt was better than the UK?

I've thought about it loads, the desire to emigrate was basically the reason I wanted a degree. My girlfriend amd I looked into Canada and decided agagainst it for the following reasons:

- Don't want to bring up children with no family support.
- Have a lot to lose as we both have well played jobs and have good social lives.

Most importantly:
-It would be a sideways move. If the situation was similar to how it had been in the past when the pound was so strong that you'd make a load of money on the flight and could move into a massive house we would have thought about it more seriously.

Basically, would your quality of life improve?

I have thought about it many times and took a step forward a few years ago by buying a house in Bavaria, me and my partner have also discussed buying/setting up a holiday rental business in the South of France

If it’s something you want to do then go it, it would be better to try it even if it fails than wonder “what if” in a few years time

To be honest, even if it is a sideways move, I would still see it as a positive one as you've got the advantage of "the new" over the same everyday life you're having back in the UK. Living abroad, you'll generally learn or experience something new every single day. Mostly it's good, sometimes frustrating, but you'll learn, adapt and grow.

If you're going to be financially stable over there, and be financially stable when you come back here, there's no reason not to do it. There aren't really any long term drawbacks as in 60 years you're probably going to be dead anyway.

Something else that influenced our decision. Lots of family members would never be able to visit so I think we'd feel obliged to use annual leave to come back to the UK.

Also, what do you do when parents start getting older and need a bit of help.

My GF is from Australia(Sydney/Brisbane though, not Adelaide) - she emigrated to get away from there as there’s a lot of stuff you don’t really think about associating with the country. Very right wing, constantly in flux, anti-environmental politics, for example. And the stories she tells about the size of the insects there gives me the fear.

With that said, she reckons the food is much, much better in australia and that depending on where you’re living, the people are much friendlier and welcoming than Scotland/the UK.

Which option would you regret most in years to come?

Option 1: You emigrate to Australia, it doesn’t work out and you come back to the UK.

Option 2: You stay in the UK.

As long as option 1 doesn’t completely financially ruin you, at worst you’ll have had an experience. Option 2 will always leave you wondering what might have been.

Not really, it is all our convicts anyway. Poshrule will be raped in his sleep, murdered and then his house set on fire.

Extremely tempted to do the same mate. Have applied to a couple of jobs over there. If I get one, my fiance and I are going :slol:
