No, they really don't. Its forward and backwards from a physical perspective unless you hold your pad in a strange way.

Just because you've always called them Up and Down, doesn't mean thats what they are.

No, they really do.

I don't invert but don't have a problem with people that do. What I do have a problem with is the faux-logic that inverters use to justify their choice.

"Controlling the neck of the character that you're playing" Seriously, that is bizarre. How does the other stick correspond to movement then, tilting the axis of the knee? Contracting the thigh muscle to raise the leg? Either way surely you'd need two sticks, one for each leg?

And okay so you've tilted you're virtual guys head back by pulling toward you on a stick, but what about his gun arm, how does that get moved or is you're virtual puppet like one of the Thunderbirds and his limbs are interconnected and all move together?

Non-inverted FTW. A positive input on the control device should correspond to a positive output on the screen. Human Computer Interaction 101.

That's what they are called in EVERY GAME EVER MADE. Or did you play a different version of Super Mario Bros that used forward, backward, left & right as the directional inputs? I have never in my life heard of a game that says to push backwards on the d pad to duck.

So what?

The physical facts are that they aren't up and down, but forwards and backwards.

You don't really grasp the insanity of the man watching him argue with someone else while observing from afar. You really have to experience it for yourself to get a real feel for it.

Yeah, the only games I'll ever invert for are flight sims and I never play them anyway.

People (particularly HSH) are being really pedantic about this. "Itz not up, itz forward merrrr!" Jesus strawberry floating Christ.

HSH28 wrote:On menus you push forwards to go up, you aren't pushing up. Not that difficult to understand.

So what non-inverters are actually doing is Forward = Up...which makes no logical sense whatsoever.

In a menu Forward = Up makes sense. In an FPS Forward = Up doesn't.

Yes it does. I move my mouse forward, and the camera pans up. Forward = up.

Why would forward move a camera up though, logically theres no particular reason why.

Well, for instance, when I play StarCraft 2, if I move my mouse to the top of the screen, it will scroll upwards. When using the mouse cursor at any time, moving it forward translates to an upward motion on screen. Why would I want a different result when playing a game?

Would you rather lift a mouse to look up and plunge it through your desk to look down?

HSH :fp:

Think of the mouse/camera as a football on a treadmill. When the treadmill moves foward, it in turn moves the ball (read: camera) in reverse.

There's no point in trying to apply logic to either side of the argument. Each of us uses what we are accustomed to and there's no reason for anyone to change. It really is as pointless a discussion as "which shoe do you put on first".
