Nothing like the feeling of walking backwards up to the edge of a drop, to then roll a square's length to the other side, all prepped and ready for the running jump towards the aforementioned edge.

Tank controls

Also, was it just me or was it possible to get to the end of Revelations without a specific item that was needed to progress? I really feel like that did happen to me back in the day and I restarted the whole game. But it's completely possible I was just being really dumb.

Think Revelations might be my favourite

What do you reckon to our chances of getting an Angel of Darkness remaster?

I have so many wonderful memories of the first 3 TR games. The first one was on Playstation, the other 2 were on PC. TR1 was one of the very first games to use an atmospheric soundtrack properly.

Didn't the games fall away in quality a bit afterwards? They didn't seem to review as well.

Not sure how I'd feel about replaying them now though. It would only be for nostalgic reasons and retro games often aren't as fun going back after such a long time.

Depends who you read at the time. If you read the US media or Dreamcast magazines, then yes. If you read PlayStation and multiformat magazines, then no. EDGE gave the 5th one a 4/10 I think it was, but everywhere else was 8s, 9s and 10s, though with a seemingly annual caveat when the titles went Platinum or in Previews that the previous entry wasn't as good. Charlie Brooker reviewed the first 3 for PC Zone and all received 90+. 5/5 from ARCADE for 1, 2 (retroactively), 3 and 4.

No, you're right, because that's exactly what happened to OPM's Nick Ellis also (chronicled in issue #95).

OPM #95 wrote:It is a truly huge game. I forget just how long it took to play the thing but it probably ran into months. So there I am at the tail end of the tale, struggling up the side of the Great Pyramid. I find a way in and work my way through the chambers until I find a room with spots to place the Shaft Keys that I've been hoarding in recent levels. Hurrah! Except that there are four spots to place the keys in and I only have three keys. WHAT? Crushed, I poke around the pyramid. I retrace my steps for miles back searching for the final key. I am unsuccessful. After days more playing I decide never to play the frickin' stupid idiot game again.

Although we hate to say it, this is why some people can't stand Tomb Raider. Frustrating, long-winded, repetitive - just a few of the accusations levelled at the game by anti-Laras, and maybe they have a point. It's not a 'pick-up-and-play' game. It requires devotion, patience and dedication like nothing else. But that's what makes it such a rich experience and why I played them all. If you've seen the Southern Shaft Key kicking around anywhere, do tell.

Time to dig out the old Prima strategy guides, methinks.

Now available to pre-order on the PlayStation Store, at the reduced price of £22.49. You've got until February 2024 though, so no need to rush.

It inexplicably has an age rating of 18, for EXTREME VIOLENCE. :fp:

I never had any issues with the controls so I'll be looking forward to this as TR is one of my favourite series of games.

I hope they kept the cheats the same. I remember how different they were to the usual 'Enter triangle, circle, L1 R1'. It was more like 'Sidestep left, right, spin clockwise 3 times, jump backwards with a roll and now you've blown yourself up'.

I don't get why we still haven't seen any actual footage of the game(s). We're a month from release and yet we only have a few GIFs to look at?

I'm keen on the idea of these but I'll definitely be holding off from laying any money down until reviews arrive.

They appear to have done a great job with it, but strange how we’ve not seen any sustained gameplay demonstrations yet. The pre-launch hype has actually been quite constrained on their part (despite Push Square running a poll and these remasters ranking highly in reader interest).

Would have been great to have a physical disc release from Limited Run games. Would have been nice in the old PS1 cases as well, but they’re probably not exactly easy to put back into production. A PC-style big box job would do the job too though. I suppose there’s still time for a delayed announcement should these do well digitally.

As I had credit expiring last month and nothing to spend it on I ended up preordering these. Not sure I’ll ever get around to playing them though.

They look promising. It looks like more work has been put in to these than other recent remasters and they seem fairly priced.

Very curious to see how well the "modern controls" work. The entire mechanics of traversal in these games are designed around the very specific way the controls worked, it was all quite meticulous how it operated - how far you could jump given the space available to you and so on. feel like they may have had to add quite a bit of looseness to the modern options which may break things - make previously impossible jumps passable etc.

St Francis' Folly was particularly built around the older controls... i'll probably playthrough with old and new...

Oh what to get this on...

Switch is a no as I can't be doing with only 1080p
PlayStation 5 for it being the nostalgic home of tomb raider for me.
Or pc and the potential for lots and lots of mods.

These were exceptional PS1 games.

Bloody hard figuring out the puzzles at times. I feel like the internet wasn't a thing back then?

I'm not sure this is enough to persuade me to ruin the memory of some classics. Looks like they've done a better job than the GTA collection, though.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

I remember being unable to even get out of the opening cave in Tomb Raider 2. Had to use my pocket money to buy the official guide so I could find the one climbable spot to get out

Kind of relied on the guide completely after that
