There was a muted reaction as Tony Blair picked up the Philanthropist of the Year gong at the GQ Men of the Year ceremony

Former prime minister Tony Blair won GQ Magazine's Philanthropist of the Year award on Tuesday for his work tackling malaria in Africa.

If it's any consolation Blair picked up banana split Of The Decade later in the night...

Mr Blair, who has been criticised in the past for leading Britain into war in Iraq in 2003, received the award at the Men of the Year Awards held at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London.

He was recognised for his work establishing three charities: The Tony Blair Sports Foundation, Tony Blair Faith Foundation and Africa Governance Initiative.

GQ magazine’s decision to hand Tony Blair a "philanthropist of the year" award has been met with a wave of criticism.

The former British Prime Minister was surprisingly handed the award at a celebrity-packed ceremony in central London last night.

He received the honour for his “tireless charity work across the world” and his name quickly began trending on Twitter.

Many social media users mocked Mr Blair's award, with the disbelief later matched when Kim Kardashian picked up GQ’s Woman of the Year award.

Labour MP John Mann criticised the decision, arguing it “sends out the wrong message”.

If it wasn't already dead, I'd rather be seen reading Nuts NUDE than holding GQ magazine ever again.

At least Tulisa sucked a cock and put it on the internet, and Kim got the full works and shared it. What has Blair done? Nothing.

Only ever picked up GQ a couple of times and always wondered what I was thinking before even making it through the 20 pages of ads at the start of each issue.

I'm surprised they let him out of prison to collect the award.

I usually get it when it comes with a free razor (a strangely regular semi-occurrence). As for the contents, I can't relate to probably 80% of it.

Seriously?

How is he a war criminal for acting on intelligence that strongly suggested military action in Iraq was necessary?

People praised Thatcher after the Falklands and Churchill is classed as some sort of national savior, both indirectly caused plenty of soldiers deaths yet somehow Blair is comparable to Mugabe and Pol Pot.

Thatcher responded to an actual invasion of British territories (with oil interests). Blair fabricated a story to serve oil interests.

'Strongly'. It was never strong and highly likely fabricated. Note how most news sources now try to link the war in Iraq to Afganistan and Al Qaeda, despite them not having any kind of presence in Iraq before the war. David Kelly mysteriously died while investigating the intelligence....

You really think a Government would do that? Just lie to the public to justify corporate interests?
