PC and A500. A600 was for people who couldn't afford to upgrade to A1200.

Nah, I just don't know why, but I don't like Doom 3 at all. I loved Doom 1/2 to bits, but I can't enjoy Doom 3 at all. Blah.

Did you ever try the Doom 3 Classic mod at all? It takes out all the pretentious rubbish and attempts to turn the game back into Doom 1, right down to recreating the level layouts.

Or for those of us who were unfortunate enough to splash the cash in the very slim release window between the A600 and A1200 :fp:

That said though, both A1200 and A600 were very nice with a hard-drive in 'em.

Mark Sibly's "Gloom" was very enjoyable, though I'd be lying if I tried to claim that it was any kind of match for Doom.

Not to mention the wonderful 'bullet time' effect of the Artifact. Fantastic fun - FEAR may have (just) got there first, but in D3:RoE it's used to great effect and once you have Sarge's shotty: slowing down time + shotty = fun.

Yep, RoE was a great expansion to D3. I was not disappointed. It was so good to see more of the excavation sites, too (RE5, anyone..?). Honestly, these two games have spread their genetics into so many games that have followed...

It was the most stupid review ever if that's what you mean. They gave Doom [7] and Turok 2 [9] :lol:

My first Doom was on 32x, bordered and with a load of levels missing but still a good game. Since then I have played it on many machines.

Atari Jaguar (The only id console conversion)
Snes
Playstation (great new soundtrack)
Saturn (Rage burn in hell you strawberry floaters)
GBA
360

it just never gets old.

Interesting video for Doom fans on the link below.

In 1993, Dan Linton, owner of a hugely successful BBS called Software Creations, visited Texas and made his way to id Software. This is the footage he recorded one night in November 1993.

Shown are several of id's employees at the time: Jay Wilbur, Shawn Green, John Romero, Dave Taylor, Sandy Petersen and Adrian Carmack, Bobby Prince was visiting to finish the music and create the sound effects.

This video has 21 minutes of me playing DOOM before the sound effects were put in as well as some early deathmatching with Shawn Green.

That video with the thousands of enemies is just epic! :shock: :lol:

Doom is a classic, my first experience of it being on the 32X before investing in the PC version. Went back to it recently with the 3D mod (forget the name) and it hasn't aged at all in terms of gameplay, still the quintessential FPS.

I also loved Doom3, at the time I hadn't played anything like it and to be honest, nothing else in that sub-genre has come close to it. I do look forward to seeing what id come up with for Doom4, though I wonder if it'll be much of a departure from Doom3, albeit with prettier graphics - especially if they use the Rage engine.

Actually, I believe there were several games to predate the use of bullet time. Max Payne, of course. There was also a wonderful little bullet-time mutator for - of all things, Unreal Tournament.

Alas I was the one who came third and ended up with Dark Chronicle, which I enjoyed immensely :) Bah, all this talk makes me want to go back and dive right into Doom 3 again. I still cant believe just how much of a different game Resurrection of Evil was either, the artifact literally turned the game into a whole different beast. 8-)

Doom was the first game I bought on my Playstation in June 1995 and I spent the first 2 weeks of the summer holiday from Uni at my mates house playing Doom death match and co-op with 2 Playstations, 2 copies of Doom and 2 back to back TV's.... It was amazing! Literally played for 16 hours straight for the whole 2 weeks! We had such a laugh - played through the campaign together loads of times and we each had stereo headphones on so we could 'hunt' each other down in the deathmatches...

I know it sounds pretty unspectacular now, but linked co-op with stereo headphones was pretty bloody cool 14 years ago! That gaming session was fantastic and sadly is unlikely to ever be matched, even though the technology is so much better now, back then that set up and the amazing game was just special!

Since then, I've bought Doom for the GBA and on XBLA but the music on the Playstation version is the best! Just awesome

The framerate on the PS1 version seemed pretty ropey. Something about the way Doom rendered graphics I believe (not true 3d).

That and the digital control was a major drag after getting used to the mouse.

I genuinely don't think iD can muster that focus on level design anymore. Carmack is the driving force, he's the tech-guy and I believe his most recent project, Rage, is an open-world type affair.

Even with the right staff, Quake was mostly an accident of mishmashing design elements created for like, two or three different games that was stitched together at the eleventh hour.

I liked Doom 3 but they really shouldn't have held the double barrel shotgun back for the expansion because it was easily the best weapon in the game. I played through nearly the entire expansion using that gun. :wub:
