Yes, they have been around for a while. I saw a documentary a few years ago about the pick up artists like Roose and the meninist lunatics that are associated with them. It all links to the alt-right, 4ch*n and the red pill wankers (literally wankers ).
The Toronto banana split wasn’t even the first time this has happened.
Jesus H. I take it the pick up stuff is just about objectifying women? I can't get my head around this, is it about (the lack of) hooking up, being ugly or just being angry at beautiful people?

All of the above.
That Roosh guy for instance is a very pleasant chap.
In February 2015, Roosh was criticized for a blog post that he wrote titled "How to Stop Rape" in which he proposed legalising rape on private property. In the post, he said "If rape becomes legal under my proposal, a girl will protect her body in the same manner that she protects her purse and smartphone. If rape becomes legal, a girl will not enter an impaired state of mind where she can't resist being dragged off to a bedroom with a man who she is unsure of—she'll scream, yell, or kick at his attempt while bystanders are still around. If rape becomes legal, she will never be unchaperoned with a man she doesn't want to sleep with. After several months of advertising this law throughout the land, rape would be virtually eliminated on the first day it is applied."

fedora-wearing misogynists are basically people with absolutely 0 social skills or self-esteem, who've convinced themselves that their problems are caused by their virginity, and therefore blame women (who obviously won't date them) for those problems. It is both very gross and very sad.
"Pick-up artists" are a related group of weirdo misogynists who at best come up with creepy, naff strategies for having one night stands with "sluts" and at worst actually advocate and organise date rape.
As you might imagine there's a lot of overlap between the two "communities".
fedora-wearing misogynist = Involuntary Celibate - does what it says on the tin. Cant get their hole, even though they want it. See also: The Supreme Gentleman, Fedoracore, M'Lady, Nice Guy.
Chad = Chad Thundercock - your stereotypical jock male. Alpha male, Stacy wants him, not you. Confident, life is easy, everything handing to him on a plate. Has become gradually corrupted by fedora-wearing misogynists to mean 'attractive male that isnt me'. See also: Post-transformation Zyzz, every single american jock teenager love interest in a teen film, 99% of men who nail a bird.
Stacy = Stacy Thundercunt - your standard pretty woman. Cheerleader, pretty, friends, potential mean-girl tier. Rejects the advances of fedora-wearing misogynists in favour of getting screwed over by Chad. Rejects Nice Guys and Supreme Gentlemen blind to how good their life would be, because they are too thirsty for abs and fat cocks. See also: Literally every woman who hasnt strawberry floated you.

It must be more than just not nailing chicks though. The internet + living in a big city makes it easier than ever to find people who either just want to get laid or don't have the confidence to approach people irl. I still find the whole thing mental, everyone wants to be better looking and for people to find them attractive.

Yeah absolutely, it's driven by much deeper issues than common-or-garden loneliness IMO. My guess is that these people don't have friends, family, hobbies, or a job, I imagine there's often untreated mental illness in there too, and being a gross misogynist online is their outlet for how bad they feel about themselves.
But if you ask them it's all "Stacy's" fault for not going out with them.

I'm reading the "Pick Up Post" topic completely wrong now

The fedora-wearing misogynist community is extremely destructive and toxic. They drag each other down in their echo chamber and anyone who breaks free and tries to come back and offer insight from their experiences and what they changed in is immediately denounced as "not being a true fedora-wearing misogynist" in the first place.
When you were partying, I studied the theory test. When you were having premarital sex, I mastered the emergency stop. While you wasted your days at the gym in pursuit of vanity, I cultivated engine braking skills. And now that the world is on fire and the DVLA are at the gate you have the audacity to come to me for help.

Unfortunately I think it's one of the things that is always going to be a part of nerd culture. Lots of these people are likely social outcasts who find comfort in the escapism these interests and hobbies bring and the internet has made it easier for these communities to start up. I imagine they start getting protective over these interests and 'outsiders', especially women become the enemy. All communities have the potential for a toxic minority but there is something about the solitude of being a nerd and the hyperbolised communication through the internet that lacks the social filter most of us get through real life interactions.
That might apply more to the gamergate situation but they seem like part of the same issue. Such a crazy line to cross though, I get being jealous of people but crossing the line to taking someone's life? strawberry float. Is there any cult like aspects with leaders, indoctrination and all that other good stuff?
