So um, I'm not really up to date about this #gamergate crap.

Why were these guys targeting women again?

Yeah, pretty much.

And regarding Boogie's video on the last page...welp. if you see nothing wrong with that then I dunno what to say to you really. I really don't.

Yeah strawberry float Boogie and strawberry float his centrism that's secretly right leaning, he lost me the moment he compared Jontron's extreme white supremacist views to "trying on a new hat." I have no tolerance for far right sympathising, especially in this day and age. While I don't want to think of all folks on the way there as unreachable, that doesn't mean we should handle alt right rhetoric with kid gloves.

I agree with a lot of what you have to say but I truly do not understand where you’re coming from the Boogie ‘joke’. It’s awful, not funny, bad taste but... it’s a joke. It’s incredibly in poor taste but where does a joke stop for you?

Take our forums history, we used to post memes involving 9/11, the Tibetan monk who set himself on fire, tianenmen Square, in hindsight it’s awful but we did it to shock and make each other laugh. We never believed the things we were posting, it was simply to get the laugh between friends, how far to push the taboo. Now, I think things change somewhat when speaking in an open enviroment because someone could take it the wrong way, you don’t want anyone to feel bad even if it’s joke but where does that then end?

When you say things like ‘if you see nothing wrong with that then I dunno’, you’re fueling that fire of where does polictal correctness start and ends and who polices it?

And just want to add, I have no feelings for or against Boogie, I really don’t care about Internet personalities, I’m simply talking about this ‘joke’ which I can understand is going abit off topic.

Taf, how did you arrive at that position? This is what I said:

jawafour wrote:...it's a clip from a livestream where Boogie digs at Logan Paul for showing a dead person in his video! It's cack-handed and something that, with a bit of thought, he probably wouldn't have presented in that way; but - in my view - it's not something that you're making it out to be i.e. "taunting a suicide victim".

I said that as a response to you're assertion that Boogie2988 was "taunting a suicide victim" in that clip. I disagreed and stated why; i.e. it was a "cack-handed" dig at Logan Paul and that "with a bit of thought, he probably wouldn't have presented in that way". How does that equate to "jawa sees nothing wrong with it"? You're putting words into my mouth and seeking out things that aren't there.

Yeah, that's fair. I didn't recognise that you said this, so apologies. I still think there's more malevolence there than you do, that the idea to even consider such an outburst speaks volumes in itself, but that's something we're just not going to agree on.

Youtubers.

Apparently it'd a valid career now. But I notice one of the channels I watch (and I don't know why it's awful) has a Paetron of over $37k a month.

I don't understand this world anymore

Probably for the best :simper:

Though I reckon you'd love MyLifeinGaming, their deep dives on getting the best image quality out of consoles are works of art

YouTubers are our generation's digital-clock-on-your-video-recorder: the first leap in tech we just don't get. I will never not be utterly flabbergasted at the amount of followers the Paul brothers have.

My son watches some shite called FGTEEV, the early episodes they are in a little shitty house, but by 2016 they have a mansion and holidays all over the world. I had a look and they have 3million subscribers, THREE MILLION!!!

To be fair, I have no issue with youtube being a valid career. I follow plenty of channels (Digital Foundry, MyLifeinGaming, Pushing up Roses, MetalJesusRocks, Super Bunnyhop, Lazy Game Reviews, Lindsay Ellis etc) that clearly put a metric ton of work into their content going by their production values. Honestly, it's quite heartening in a way that the platform's opened up avenues like that.

I just ask that they not being horrendously problematic in their views D: Especially when they're appealing to kids, that especially worries me

I don't have a problem with intelligent well made content, what I dislike is people who sit in front of a wall of games and barely know what they are talking about.

The thing I hate more are those strawberry floating twitter accounts that post those #MegadriveMonday #WedNESday and then pictures of the games. How about posting some information about those games? Maybe a bit of history? Nope, my brother is one of those fuckwits, he has no strawberry floating idea about the history behind games, he just buys loads of retro games, never plays them and then take pics and posts them online as if he some source of retro gaming knowledge.

If someone's got the talent and is prepared to work hard at it, I say good for them. It's interesting to see that when I look at reviews on YT for a particular game (especially an older game), I can clearly see that the ratio between much-viewed and barely-viewed is gigantic. Sometimes its quite sad - I've watched very well-made, lengthy video reviews which have barely made it to 50 views. I give them a like.

Even if they have no talent and their videos are awful, fair play to them if they can make money from it.

I am way too old to be watching YouTube stars but I realise they are not aimed at me.

I can see though that it’s annoying if a well made video only gets 50 views and some shrieking little gooseberry fool gets millions.

Problems arise when those firmly in the untalented camp start to aggressively target minors with merchandise. Like this Jake Paul video with 13 000 000 views entitled: All I Want for Christmas is Some Jake Paul Merch:

Picking a point on the timeline at random (0:20) and it's Paul 'rapping' "Buy that merch" over and over. I mean, points to the guy for his straight up Del Boy hawking, but gooseberry fool like this is firmly on the 'reprehensible' side of the average person's moral spectrum.
