Not only was there nothing really discounted out of the ordinary, there was no consoles or games whatsoever now. So my mental image of purchasing an Xbox One X for half price went up in smoke.

I really like the brand though; used to go in there all the time as a kid. What was really obvious however was how their shops hadn't changed from the 90s. Almost like walking into a time machine.

Keen, aren’t you?! It was announced, what, 6 hours ago?

I buy Pokemon cards in Toys R Us sometimes and have them to thank for me taking the hobby up, to at least some extent. A real shame.

Sad. Our local Toys R Us doesn't really look all that smart and the stores could really have done with a revamp. Not bought anything from them for years.

Have used Maplin now and again but they aren't that competitive compared to online so I guess both of these companies have been on borrowed time for a while now.

Yes?

My closest Toys R Us up until about a year ago was one of the big as they would call it ''Warehouse'' stores that they have blamed for a lot of there financial situation. A tiny one opened up about a year ago in a shopping center. I think my spectrum 128k model came from the big one and I have a lot of memories walking round it as a kid thinking it was massive and wonderful, and I remember the really old adds being on the TV showing spectrums and Master Systems and stuff.

Maplins were more than online price wise from my experience but were OK if you needed stuff now , I got wires for some console mods and arcade machine repair from them because I was too lazy to wait.

Toys R Us down Oldbury's on the same car park as McDonalds. Many a person you see in McD's would have walked in with large bags having just been over the other side in Toys R Us. The only memories I really have of the store were all the LEGO Star Wars sets I used to get from there when younger. And I think I got the films on DVD from there as well.
Too bad a Smyths opened up in the busier side of Oldbury and stole most of their thunder.

Even as a child going to Toys'R'Us wasn't that fun an experience. The only thing I remember about my local store was the PC section where they were all running the Mind Maze game on Microsoft Encarta (I'd love Microsoft to rerelease that on Bing or something ), and you wouldn't even buy a PC from there. After that it was CONSOLES (overtaken by Game et al), then BIKES (Halfords), then TOYS (even at the time Argos was about as much fun, and as others have said Smyths and the Entertainer are far better).

I'll miss Maplins as I'd have a gander when I was in town, but I rarely bought anything. It always reminded me of Tandy.

My main memory of Toys R Us was having to walk through (what seemed like) a really long, winding walkway upon entering the store, with these mirrored panels along the wall. Not sure if that was just my local, but it was quite bizarre. I used to enjoy going there to look at toys and, later, video games, but it always seemed expensive. Plus you had to take a piece of paper to the till to buy something, rather than the item itself. It must have been well over 10 years since I last went into one though, and shops like The Entertainer and Smyth's always seem more convenient and 'fun' (and probably more focused - Toys R Us stores always seemed massive and like they wanted to stock everything under the sun). Shame though.

Maplin is no loss for me personally, but always a shame to see jobs and useful shops go.

Used to use the one at Gloucester from time to time when needing to get items for my brother's kid, it'll be a shame to see it go.

When i was a kid i used to see the ads (well, actually, that one classic ad which everyone knows) and really wanted to go to one, never had a chance at the time though sadly as the stores were just too far away.

I bet there's still more in Yeovil than there is here.

I remember when my brother and I went to a Pokemon FR/LG Mew even in the local Toys R Us. Had to queue up for a couple hours because they had to take your cartridge and add it manually. They had stands to play Pokemon Box versus and cards and stuff and it was a really cool day.

Other than that I just remember going to Toys R Us when I was little and sitting in all the electric cars and wishing I could have one. I've been in a couple the last few years to look at video games/Pokemon cards and such but they always seemed to be way too expensive so I'm not really surprised they've been struggling, the prices can't compare with cheaper places (not just online, supermarkets and such).

You don't even have to go online to get cheaper than Toys R Us. Smyths Toys are often a good £10 or more cheaper for a ton of things.

Went into a Toys R Us before Christmas and the massive warehouse had 2 or 3 staff in the entire place.

Shame to see a brand I used to love as a kid back in the 80s/90s disappear from retail stores.

Saying that, I last stepped foot in one a couple of years back and it was pretty sterile, not a fun place at all.

I'm going to have to go to toys r us before they go with my daughter, they don't seem to have yokai watch stuff in the entertainer, and she's absolutely mad on it at the moment. That and she loves seeing if they have any Pokemon stuff on offer.

Ludo is gooseberry fool!
