Hi

Looking for some help in regards to a travel insurance claim.
Long story short we missed our flight due to being stuck in traffic and the road being closed even though we were on track to be at the airport more than 2 hours early.

They have come back to me and requested evidence of disruption.
I sent them links of the accident and screenshot of my journey in Google map timeline but this don't seem to have worked.

Anyone here with industry knowledge able to advise if there is anything I can do?

In my experience, missing your flight is normally only covered if the vehicle you were travelling in suffered a mechanical breakdown.

Hello. Depends on the situation - some insurance policies cover you for transport issues, but generally it’s very hard to prove that you left enough time for the journey or that the accident/congestion was severe enough that no reasonable additional time could have avoided the miss. I think you might be in a bit of trouble unless you can prove that the road was closed for several hours.

Did you drive to the airport yourself or did you go by taxi or coach? If it's by taxi or coach have you tried contacting the company and seeing if they can back up your claim with details on when you left where you were staying?

The road was closed all day as oil spilled onto the road, it's literally a situation I could do nothing about and my Google timeline backs up when we left, shows where we travelled and there's numerous internet articles that detail what occurred. If we had left an hour earlier the result would have been the same.

I could ask the taxi driver to do a letter who took us.

That might help. If you don’t mind me asking - who is your insurer?

The current Staysure single trip policy wording states:

Section 4a Missed Departure
What is covered:
We will pay you up to £500 for Basic cover and £1,500 for Comprehensive cover, for reasonable additional travelling and accommodation expenses necessarily incurred to reach your overseas destination or to return to your home country by the most direct route.

If you arrive at the airport, port or international coach or rail terminal too late to commence the first part of your pre-booked international trip, as a result of:
a) breakdown of or accident directly involving the vehicle in which you are travelling; or
b) cancellation or curtailment of scheduled public transport due to adverse weather conditions, strike, or industrial action, or mechanical breakdown, or accident.

So I would be covered then under B?

No because a taxi wouldn't fall under the definition of scheduled public transport. That would be things like a plane, train, ferry or coach service.

So why would they ask for evidence rather than decline?

You were a bit unlucky not being able to get bumped to a later flight. I'm assuming you tried to do that on the day?

It happened to me once, and there were spare seats on a flight leaving 4 hours later and I got them free of charge. Although that was over 10 years ago, maybe they don't do that any more.

Well they need to have all of the evidence available to them in order to fully assess the claim. You'd rather that than them just straight up reject it without considering all of the supporting evidence.

If it's not within there criteria and it's known about know then yes I would rather than waisting time if it's going to reach that conclusion anyway.

I'll jump through the hoops and see what happens.

Thanks for your help.
