Yeah, the British public do love to overreact to some things don't they! Can't remember where I saw it, but someone said how the 16 year olds finances should basically be ruined for the entirety of their life, should be given a multi million pound fine.

Chances are they will actually have a hefty fine to pay, I imagine the tree in question did have some sort of preservation order on it and one of those do incur hefty fines if you cut them down, of course most people don't care about that aspect of it either as its normally developers who will make more than enough money from the property they're building to pay the fine and still turn a huge profit

Most people would save their own dog over a stranger, just like you would save you own child over a stranger. Dogs are family, & that tree is a sacred part of England. I just hope you don't live in England with an attitude towards heritage like that.

Absolutely devastated that this tree is No more !!!!! Felled in the early hours 28.9.23 <3 As a local who has walked here many times, and whose grandfather owned The Twice Brewed Inn (0.8 miles away) I hope they find and punish the perpetrator!!!

I came here to watch this beautiful tree in one of my favourite films from my childhood... I'm so saddened the tree has been destroyed, it honestly makes no sense..

it makes perfect sense, its a metaphor for our once great united kingdom, im moving to greenland

Is the other tree your mum because she loves wood?

It's obviously bad for this to happen but as a species we are cutting down tree's all the time for all various reasons and there is no outrage about these other tree's.

The tree in The Shawshank Redemption does not exist anymore but that was more down to a storm destroying it

Some of the reactions are over the top but it's reassuring that there is a broad understanding of how nature is irreplaceable and should be protected. I'd much rather this be the outrage of the week over ULEZ protests.

I live nearby in Hexham and the local Facebook groups have been gold. Someone posted a picture of the man arrested with his full name, which is probably legally dubious, showing him and his young grandson, and was like "look at how this man is with a baby, how could he be guilty?!" while another compared him to Caroline Flack. Just gold. Lots of very over the top commenting.

I'm gutted about the tree, was one of my favourite places. I would like the people found and punished as far as the law allows. It's an important part of the region's heritage and so this is just awful really.

I think you can be concerned about both, but when a tree that is a big part of the region's identity (it appears on literally everything out here) is felled in an act of vandalism then people will see it as a personal attack.

Lack of respect for a 200 year old tree giving you the human arrogance to chop it down because, after all, it is just a tree, is just one end of a wedge that has, at the other end, developers destroying ancient woodland, (including public bodies), because, after all, they are just trees - we can always plant some more.

Disrespect for, and isolation from, nature at the small end ultimately has led us to the huge mess we are in at the global end.

I'm not saying this applies to everyone, but someone who views this tree, and other natural landmarks, as a cultural symbol first and foremost, is capable of getting very upset about this one tree being felled, but then also not caring about the felling of a section of a forest, because the forest as a whole still exists.

But at least, so far, nobody has grifted a spa complex in the memory of the tree.
