Reviews of the opening few episodes -

Based on the three episodes HBO sent to critics, the second season of True Detective is nearly as addictive as the first.

True Detective Is Back, and Here's What Makes It Great

......

Did I mention that the show also still a ton of fun? Pizzolatto is far too shrewd, and far too base, to let his grander meditations get in the way of a rollicking story. Unlike with season one, which was set in Louisiana and unfolded at a bayou-worthy pace, season two begins with its four main characters careening off the rails, and they're only gathering more speed. So okay, fine, season two isn't as good. Of course it's not. But so what? Give me more.

True Detective’s Second Season Is Brooding, Sour, and Totally Fascinating

.......

The result often plays like a cousin of The Wire as directed by Michael Mann — the kind of series that presents its broken, brooding heroes as if they were characters in an opera about the many different flavors of corruption, institutional and personal. It takes everything so seriously that you have to laugh at it a little bit, then admire it for being true to whatever it’s trying to be and not really giving a damn what you think of it. You’ll probably miss the humor of the first True Detective — the needling banter between Cohle and his partner, Woody Harrelson’s Marty Hart, that spawned a thousand memes and probably made the graphic violence and philosophical monologues palatable to a wide audience — but the brooding sourness of this one is fascinating in a different way, though it loses points for showing us a world that feels far more familiar than the one showcased in season one.

At least in the first three episodes of True Detective season two, that magic is missing. Maybe when the various strands of the complicated story come together, the payoff will be there. Or none of that could happen. And what we’ll get is a sophomore slump. The pressure is now on for the remaining five episodes.

The Bottom Line: Let's just say it's no season 1.

Score a second bullseye for “True Detective.”

HBO’s neo-noir crime mystery franchise returns next weekend with a new cast, new city, new era, new case and new look.

But the switch to Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn instead of Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey has left one detail intact. It’s still the kind of show that makes TV viewers reach for phrases like “golden age of television drama.”

4 out of 5 stars

I have only just finished the first season but strawberry float me that was amazing. Woody and McConaughey were so good, the new cast have a hell of a lot to live up to.

I have only ever seen Vince Vaughan in comedies (and the utterly pointless remake of Psycho) but am looking forward to seeing him in a serious role. Hopefully he can surprise everyone.

I think Vince Vaughan will be great but I'll admit I'm not nearly as hyped for this as I thought I might be now that's it's about to start.

First season turned into tripe but I'll watch this to look at the women :3

Although I bet strawberry floating money at least one of them will just be an unhappy wife

Well that was a very solid start for season 2! A little confusing what with so many interconnected characters and plots being introduced in one episode but that'll get better over time. Colin Farrell was definitely the highlight and I certainly didn't expect his character to be like that. Holy gooseberry fool @ that porch scene!

Looking forward to the next episode for sure. I feel a lot of people are going to be comparing it to season 1 at every opportunity which isn't really fair. It should be treated as a brand new show which it pretty much is.

Wasn't a fan of the theme song, though.

Really enjoyed the first episode. Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughan were excellent.

Have seen some negativity over the first episode on twitter. I will give it the benefit of the doubt for a few episodes, I didn't get hooked on TD until I was three episodes in.

Just watched, yeah I don't think it has the magic of season 1 so far but then that was some lighting in a bottle. Very solid start mind.

Felt there was far too much over reliance on music to set the scene. Everything is so broody, pull up to the school, dramatic music. Soiree gather, dramatic music, it doesn't need it for everything.

Oh and that final shot was teeeeerrrrriiiibbblllleee.

Really enjoyed the first episode. Might take a bit of time to get over mcconaughey and harrelson's absence and the southern Gothic theme I adored.

Some of the writing seemed a bit too expositioney for my liking "I like the roads" and there was McAdam's sister being a can girl that seemed too obvious but OK. Also all stood around the dead body at the end while the camera panned around their faces lol

Farrell is great and so is Vaughn.

Loved the opening credits and the end credits had a nick cave song so that you me hooked. Can't wait for the next one

Good start, a lot going on in the 1st ep but seemingly it'll merge a bit now. Like others, I'll be treating it as a completely different show to the 1st season.
