The most damning thing that can be said about True Detective’s second season is that it’s too amorphous to be constructively criticized. You might as well try to hold water in your hands. The sophomore outing of Nic Pizzolatto’s crime drama, which ended Sunday, was so disorganized, mannered, and altogether scatterbrained that it’s tough to say definitively what it was trying to be, much less analyze how it failed to reach whatever goals it might have set for itself. I defended it at first, but after a while I had to stop because it was making a fool of me.

Read the whole thing, my thoughts veer ever so slightly different but case in point, the show was a mess.

Got to agree with that analysis to be honest. Whilst I enjoyed it in parts (episodes 5-7 were all pretty good) the narrative as a whole was an utter mess. There were far too many characters for any of them to be properly fleshed out which meant that we were left with lose ends and unanswered questions galore. I really wondered at times just had much script editing this went through, some of the issues wouldn't have been that hard to iron out. Overall I was just left feeling like what should have been central to the narrative (the actual murder/investigation) was always just a side plot without ever really being all that interesting. There was never really that cathartic "got 'em" moment.

Such a shame really. Season 1 remains one of the best television series I've ever seen, and whilst I never expected this to be as good, I really never anticipated it would be this much of a let down.

What do we think the chances of a third season are?

Well, I enjoyed it, like the story was convoluted as hell. But I enjoyed the performances and the characters. Season 1 was obviously better, but this wasn't so bad imo. Meh I'd be up for another season, but maybe they need some better writers to help.

That was really good. I decided to save them all up, then watch them one each day this season which I think works a lot better than having to wait a week for the next instalment.

Vaughn was amazing throughout. I really liked how they gradually showed his character and what he was capable of.

Taylor Kitsch was okay, but probably the weakest link for me as I expected.

Overall I would say it was as enjoyable as Season 1, although they are both very different so it's hard to compare them. This definitely felt a lot faster and was a lot easier to follow than Season 1 (more action-ey compared to the mystery aspect of the first).

That was so bad lol. Convoluted story, awful writing, couldn't understand what Farrell was saying, kitsch is the worst actor I hope he never works again, forcing this moody atmosphere down the viewers throats so try hard, that strawberry floating singer in the bar.

Just poor.

I liked the opening credits.

I thought it was poor on the whole. Enjoyed the finale if only for some action.

Moody cop pouts at screen all the time.
will mumbles
Lady cop might have sex with someone soon so keep your eyes peeled fellas!

I actually had to pause it and get the Mrs to explain what the hell was going on half way through the finale, not just with that episode but in general, found it so hard to follow because there were too many things going on and it wasn't clear what the focus was supposed to be.
I still couldn't tell you what the story was about... Someone wanted diamonds and a hard drive and then people got framed I think.

Can anyone give me a synopsis of the show for when I'm done as I have no strawberry floating idea what's going on or who anyone is.

Just read this post, exactly my feelings

Just finished the last episode of season 2 and I enjoyed it. Vaughan was the highlight of the season for me, I haven't ever really seen him play a serious role before and on this evidence he should try more of it instead of increasingly shite comedies.

Farrell was good, McAdams was ok and Kitsch did alright (wooden but the role didn't need a great actor). The story as a whole had enough intrigue and action to keep me watching even if it was all a bit convoluted and hard to follow.

Not a patch on season one, but a solid season.

Amazing how quickly this fell from grace. Personally, would have watched one more season to see if they could capture half the magic of the first but I can't say I'm utterly disappointed. We'll always have season 1

I didn't think season two was all that bad and would have welcomed another season.

Ahh well, we still have Fargo

True Detective season 3 revived, David Milch joins team

After being off-the-air for two years — and following and plenty of speculation about its future — HBO’s True Detective is making some progress behind the scenes toward a new season.

EW has exclusively learned that creator Nic Pizzolatto has penned at least the first two episodes for a potential third edition of the acclaimed anthology crime drama.

We have also learned that Emmy-winning writer-producer David Milch — the mind behind dramas such as Deadwood and NYPD Blue — is coming on board to work with Pizzolatto.

The extent of Pizzolatto and Milch’s collaboration is still early days and not yet formalized. Obviously, Milch’s experience as a writer will be a key component, but for the record he’s not expected to serve as the True Detective showrunner (at this stage, there is no specified season 3 showrunner). Also keep in mind a third season has also not yet been greenlit, so new episodes are far from certain.

Of course, you already know True Detective launched to considerable acclaim and fan fascination in 2014 and then fell into a sophomore slump with the critics during its second season in 2015. Both seasons were successful in the ratings, but it’s been unclear whether Pizzolatto was going to produce a third season, and in what capacity he would serve in such an outing. In July 2016, HBO head of programming Casey Bloys assured “…both Nic and HBO are open to another season. I don’t think Nic has a take and he’s working on some other projects. We’re open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It’s a valuable franchise, it’s not dead, we just don’t have a take for a third season yet.”

Recently Matthew McConaughey — who starred in the first season — has publicly said he would be interested in reprising his role, but there’s no indication at this time what creative direction the next season would take.

On one hand I'm super excited to see if they can capture the magic of the first, on the other hand I'm more like let it die after possible one of the worst follow ups to a TV show.
