No, I'm not trying to make a series out of this honest ... I guess I've just had a particularly flashback-based day.

Genuine love for anyone who can help me remember this one.

It's a late nineties PC game, but probably closer to 95 than 99 as I only ever played it on a Windows 95 PC (an early model at my next door neighbour's), and I'm fairly sure it came as bundled software with the PC itself.

It was an early music band game. Visually it was pretty cartoony as I recall. You auditioned various people and selected them to be in your band (of about six or so people I think) and they'd appear as an ensemble on a stage so you could judge the overall lineup as you chose the member at the front. Then you'd use some (very basic) tools to create a song and your band would play it. It would then show you whereabouts (if at all) your song came in the Top 40 (which I believe was displayed in a column on the right half of the screen, while the other half took up something else - album art maybe?), at which point you'd do it all again.

I know it sounds horrendous and it probably was but I only played it twice or so - however being my first experience of PC gaming I'd quite like to look it up and see if I can have another go.

So, ringing any bells? :)

There was a game like this on the ps1 aswell, it might be the same. But even if it is i dont know the name. You could choose to release the song in america europe or japan aswell. I think you could buy songs aswell for your band to sing if you were to lazy to make your own.
I really want to know what it is now.

I don't recall the multi-region option, or the option to buy songs, so I don't think it is, but my memories of the game are so scattered that you may well be right.

The graphics I don't think were PS1 standard, they were very cartoon-esque, kind of like...

...

...bugger, I have the perfect comparison in my head and I'm drawing a blank there too. There was a software where various colourful characters guided you round different rooms in which you could create different kinds of picture, and you'd always use daft bubble fonts and pictures of the characters doing zany things. It was a favourite at my primary school but, in hindsight, it was basically a clipart program with bells on. Sadly the name of this escapes me too  However, if you know what this is, then imagine the visuals like that for the first game.

I think I know that program. Can't for the life of me remember what it was called. At the time we were using Windows 3.1.

Rockstar Ate my Hamster?

Although I played it on the Amiga, not sure if it came out on the PC.

Yeah, it was awesome. Who can forget Bruce Stringbean and Tina Turnoff? Might be a little too early for what Danny Boy is referring to however.

Rock Star Ate My Hamster had no music creation tools at any rate.

This is ringing the faintest of faint bells.

That sounds like Creative Writer. It was basically Word, with a kid-friendly skin and a lot of hand-holding.

There was also a drawing application called Fine Artist, which followed the same template.

Devlin - that's the drawing game! Cheers!

Anyone got any clues on the PC music game?

Ad7 - what game is that? It looks familiar...
