Twilight Struggle

"Now the trumpet summons us again, not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are – but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle..."
    - John F. Kennedy

Welcome to the Original GRcade Twilight Struggle thread of the year 2016 !!!

--

BoardGameGeek's highest-ranked board game of all-time, has now made its official personal computer debut!

At its heart Twilight Struggle (TS) is card-driven strategy game for two players, with its theme taken from the Cold War. One player plays the United States (US), and the other plays the Soviet Union (USSR).

(Ripped from Wikipedia, because I am lazy)

The victory point system in Twilight Struggle uses only one victory point track and one victory point marker for both the US and the USSR. The track extends from –20 (complete USSR victory) to 20 (complete US victory), and the victory point marker starts in the middle at 0. The goal for each player is to have the victory point marker reach their extreme on the track or by having the victory point marker on their side of the track (negative for USSR, positive for US) at the end of the ten turns. A player can also win the game by having control of Europe when the Europe scoring card is played. Additionally, either player can also lose the game by having a nuclear war start during their phase.

The 103 cards in the game have two main features, events and an operation points value. Each card can generally only be played for one or the other effect, not both; a player is required to play at least one event (the "Headline Event") each turn. The operation points value allows the player to either place influence in one or more countries, attempt a coup in a country, attempt to realign the status of a country, or advance the Superpower's position in the Space Race. The events represent a specific historical event such as the creation of the Central Intelligence Agency, the Berlin Blockade, or the Cuban Missile Crisis, or might stand for a more general situation such as a nuclear test ban, anti-war protests, or a dominant performance at the Olympic Games.

Events will help either the USA or the USSR, or in some cases both. Unlike many other card-driven games, if a player plays a card (for operations) with an event associated with the opponent for anything other than the space race (the latter is a deliberate "safety valve" to allow a player to dispose of a card whose event he does not want to trigger), the event occurs for the other superpower, so a player may be forced to help her opponent in order to help herself. By contrast, only if a card shows an event favouring the phasing player (or favouring either player) does she have a free choice as to whether to trigger the event or play for the operations points.

TL;DR

Come and join us on mumble and we will help you out!

play as either the US or USSR during the Cold War. Using actual events from history, players must plan out their strategies in order to obtain world dominance.

If this sounds like a good shout then come join us![/list]

Anyway, Ive always wanted to give this game a try, never found anyone else willing to give it a go and like strawberry float was I picking up a 2 player game with noone who wants to play. I may check out the Steam version though. Does it have Vs AI play or is it just Vs humans? Id like to try it out a few times and get the embarrassing mistakes out of the way before I play a real person.

Blame Wikipedia... :shifty:

Nah just get stuck right in with the embarrassing mistakes, it's the best way to learn. The first time I played Winckle I kept loosing coup rolls... every God damned one!!

I love some cold war theme stuff so I'm perhaps a little bit ashamed to admit I've never heard of this before. Will check the vids and links out tonight.

Had a few games vs Ai last night and this morning. Excellent game. Got strawberry floated over a few times by the Ai after I played 'CIA Created' on defcon 2 but I got my own back with USSR domination in Europe haha

I've always been poo at this game, really enjoy it though. Is it just me or does the AI seem a bit coup averse? Playing against the USSR, I'd expect them to coup on AR1 of a new turn in order to drop DEFCON but they seem to resolutely avoid this, allowing me to take the initiative, which is normally the hardest part of playing as the US.

So I am getting a good amount of wins as the USSR. Last night I won by final scoring. But every time I play as the USA I get worked over. Completely different strategy and planning. My God.

As the USSR you have to drive the game forward and push your opponent, playing as the USA is all about hanging in and getting points where you can until Ronald Reagan gives you all those sweet late game cards. That, and using The Voice of America as much as you can in the mid-game.

Yeah as USSR I was trying to keep that game at Defcon 2 as much as possible - although I did keep forgetting about the Olympic games :fp: (I had 18vp's and was looking for an easy 2.... forgot about the boycott option)

What's the multiplayer set up like in this? Is play-by-email (or whatever the correct term is where both people don't have to be constantly connected) supported at all?

acording to a steam review:

Steam User : Drengy wrote:Multiplayer is asynchronous, allowing you to create games with various chess clock time limits from 30 minutes all the way up to 45 days, for those who want to play just one move per day. There’s a chat function in both the multiplayer lobby and each game. The friends list is not connected to Steam, but specific to your Playdek account, which is required for multiplayer and shared amongst all their games. If you’ve ever played Ascension, Agricola, or any of the other Playdek iOS games you can use the same account. Rankings use the standard ELO system.

I will try and find out this evening how exactly it works. (or hopefully someone can find out sooner for you :D )

He did. And to clarify why, it's because I set the chess clock system to 30 minutes each without realising that wasn't per move, it was per game.
