Uber loses its license to operate in London & may cease in the capital from October

BBC News wrote:Uber will not be issued a new private hire licence, Transport for London (TfL) has said.
TfL has concluded the ride-hailing app firm was not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence.
Uber's conduct demonstrated a lack of corporate responsibility which could have potential public safety and security implications, it said.
Uber said the decision would "show the world that, far from being open, London is closed to innovative companies".
Uber has 21 days to appeal, during which it can continue to operate.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said in a statement: "I fully support TfL's decision - it would be wrong if TfL continued to license Uber if there is any way that this could pose a threat to Londoners' safety and security."
General secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association Steve McNamara: "The mayor has made the right call not to relicense Uber."
"We expect Uber will again embark on a spurious legal challenge against the mayor and TfL, and we will urge the court to uphold this decision. This immoral company has no place on London's streets".

Not a regular - but the 2 (IIRC) times I've been in one in London. Miles better, nicer, friendlier and cheaper than a Taxi

Uber is probably going nowhere. They'll appeal, so the service will continue for now, and this tactic is most likely just a ploy to strong-arm them into making changes

I've never used it but people seem to like it, I guess the issue is that TfL need to ensure that Uber is operating in a responsible way and it does seem that they aren't really doing that at the moment.

Uber in general is miles better than cab service - I've been using them in Glasgow for a while and whenever I'm abroad. Still, with this and what's happening in Prague and Denmark, I'd sell my shares in uber sharpish.

It would be a rather bold "Screw you" to such a well known company from London and I can hear the cries of "Communism" from US conservatives from here.
I'm behind a ban here if they break the rules as just because they're popular doesn't mean they can do whatever the hell they want and the way they treat staff is pretty disgusting.

Doubt it - it was banned in Denmark in April and nobody noticed.

Their business model, as it currently stands, isn't working at all. They had a net revenue of $6.5 billion for 2016, yet made a loss of $2.8 billion. They sold off their Chinese part of the business because that too was losing a fortune. Losing London would put them further in the gooseberry fool.

When I lived in London, on the half dozen or so times I ever bothered getting a taxi it would always be an Uber. I use Uber when abroad too. London taxis take the piss with prices and the drivers are usually arseholes.
Back in the day it was impressive how well they knew the roads. But now it's just any old guy who taps a route into Google Maps, just like Uber. However, Uber do seem dodgy. I've personally never had an issue with them, but I'm probably just lucky, and obviously not a female.
Sadly (if it actually goes ahead) it just means black cab drivers will most likely whack up their prices even further. Buses and Tube for me.

Ok but who gives a strawberry float about Denmark?
This is London and everyone cares about London. It's hosted 3 Olympic games and was the first city ever to do so until Paris manages that in 2024.
London also had a Star Trek, the experience exhibition so it must be special.

ive used Uber and its very convenient but its ultimately a scam and the guy/s who created it will get out of the business with their millions and move on to something else.

Ive tried to use it a few times in Manchester and once in Glasgow and the banana splits are always so far away or such a long wait a regular taxi beats them.

Theyre just trying to be the dominant taxi service for long enough to replace their fleet with self driving cars. Thats the real end goal for Uber, the question is whether the company can weather that storm for long enough.
