Why do you use Linux then?!

You'll be using Linux by the time you're 18. Either that or you will have reinvented yourself as a chic-geek and stroll around with an iBook at all times if you haven't already.

Except Macs aren't chic-geek, geeks wouldn't be seen dead with a Mac.

Pardon ?

It's nicer but it's not amazing. Like Linux overall, really.

There are just some times where you can't beat commercial software. Linux is still aimed towards the enthusiast too much. Most developers are so pro-open source and anti-closed source that their OS suffers because it's filled with inferior third party alternatives to mainstream software. They're either too technical or have too many things missing. The developers don't get paid so you can't really expect to see the things you want unless you code something yourself.

Some Open Source developers are paid. Google, HP, IBM and Sun Systems all pay people to do full time free source development. Most to solve in house problems though so server stuff is really good. Also Linux kernel has full time paid developers. Firefox has 60 full time employees as well.

As a final note.

I installed some games.

First I tried to get System Shock 2 to run under wine. After some fidderling I managed to get it to run but it was basically unplayable.

Then I tried Steam and Team Fortress 2. This worked loaded up fine, only the sound was choppy and the graphics were set very low. On the positive side loading game servers and downloading was 10x faster than in windows.

Finally I installed Doom 3 a native Linux game and that ran pretty much as well as in windows.

I need to start using Linux again for my course. Kubuntu is quite a good one and I like openSUSE too. Both have good support for hardware, which is a must.

It's worth trying it out, but I'm not too fussed about the whole thing. I'm getting a macbook soon anyway.
