Also, Moggy, in fairness, it does say 'No capitalism', which we can only really take at face value. If one's argument is too nuanced to communicate via biro scrawled in two words on a cardboard box, then find a different way to get it across.

Why are UKIP supporters automatically 'ignorant'? Isn't this one of the symptoms of left wing thinking that was partly responsible for Labour losing the election?

Where does it show that he bought that TV? People can get boxes without buying the product you know.

Where does the writing on his sign show that he is against all forms of capitalism? People can disagree with cuts and austerity without rejecting all forms of capitalism you know.

It's a really weird idea you have that all left wingers and/or anti-austerity protesters have to be dirt poor. People can want a fairer society, less cuts and increased socialism without wanting to become a full blown communist state.

It's the lack of self-awareness in the symbolism of the photo. I don't have the idea that left wingers have to be dirt poor at all.

A lack of self-awareness? A guy wrote an anti-cuts slogan on an empty cardboard box, the symbolism is actually perfect. ;)

If left wingers/anti-austerity protesters don't have to be dirt poor to avoid being hypocrites, then what would be wrong with a guy using his old TV box to write a slogan? You have brought up the wealth of certain left wingers before (and used the meaningles "champagne socialist" phrase), tell me why a left winger with money is hypocritical (unless they are advocating full communism)?

Where does it say "No capitalism"? All I can see is "No Cuts" and "No Austerity".

I'm 100% sure that where you think it says 'austerity, it says 'capitalism'.

I think we can trace that back to something like this:

Image

The seeds of Labour's utter defeat (and defeat it was) were sewn gradually, as their upper echelon apparatchiks removed themselves further and further away from the very working classes they were ostensibly in politics to serve until in the end they sneered at them, whilst simultaneously pretending to be on their side against the evil capitalists.

Of course (and inevitably) a great many traditional Labour voters saw straight through them and voted accordingly.

The kind of mindset that lazily considers UKIP voters 'ignorant' is the kind of mindset that loses elections. UKIP got almost 4 million votes; their share of the votes quite literally skyrocketed. Remind me again, how did Labour do..?

I can’t make most of it out and am now doubting that it says austerity. The letters I can make out at the end look like “A, L, D, Y”, so maybe he is illiterate and hates Aldi. ;)

If it does say “No Capitalism” then Eighthours/Spectator have a point, unless he has taken the box from somewhere else.

Too late you are now in the debate. The current issue relates to Moggy's eyes and should he go for another eye test because everytime he looks at that sign he sees a different strawberry floating word there.

And strawberry float footballers.

You should write a sign that says 'strawberry float footballers', but do it on a football. Or an expensive replica shirt.

Because they support a party which uses xenophobia to attract votes, often completely ignoring facts to justify their own prejudices. They are the very definition of ignorance.

I would but I would make it look like "strawberry float fioaballeys" so people could argue over what was actually written on the shirt. 8-)

They got over nine million votes and 231 more seats :|

If I were you, I wouldn't analyse my posts as somehow symptomatic of a general anti-Tory sentiment that has cost Labour ground in this election, because I am not a Labour campaign organiser; nor am I an outspoken Conservative critic, although you seem to have disregarded the fact that it was they who won this election, not UKIP.

And my mindset is far from lazy - in fact, as I recall, I gave plenty of valid reasons for considering the political party that is UKIP to be racist in another thread on this very forum, and three times you simply dismissed it as "my opinion" without a single valid counterpoint. Which is far closer to laziness than any posting behaviour I have exhibited. Just because you're comfortable with your own wilful delusions doesn't mean they don't deserve to be challenged. UKIP are a racist party, trading off the incorrect notions that immigration is bad and our continued membership of EU is bad; notions gladly perpetuated by a cynical gutter press keen to sell papers.

'Champagne socialist' is not a meaningless phrase at all. Polly Toynbee rails against the evil Tories and the rich while sipping on pina coladas in her Tuscan villa, and preaches social equality while sending her kids to a private school. If you don't practise what you preach, then you're a hypocrite. I recognise that this may seem unfair where politicians are concerned - imagine the outcry if Ed Miliband had used a private hospital for his nose op! It would have been his absolute right to do so, but the imagery would have had a terrible political impact. And why? Because the rhetoric about how bad privatisation is comes from the left themselves, so it's their own fault when the likes of Toynbee get called on their hypocrisy. You can be as rich as you want as a left winger, but if you slag off the concept of private services before using them yourself (hello, Polly!), if you rail against tax avoidance while having your accountants arrange complex off-shore arrangements (hello, The Guardian!) or if one of your biggest donors is Pricewaterhousecoopers (hello, Labour!) then you deserve every bit of opprobrium thrown at you.

It wasn't an old TV box, by the way. That model was released in 2014 and currently has an RRP of £799. ;) He should have written it on the box of a 14 inch black and white portable.

But Labour have acknowledged that they made a big mistake in ignoring the issue of immigration which UKIP have based much of their support around, have acknowledged that it's a genuine worry for many people, and have said that it's not racist to have these worries. Surely it's therefore Labour's self-confessed ignorance about the impact of this issue on some of their previously core voters that has partly caused the rise of UKIP?

Btw, 'completely ignoring facts to justify their own prejudices'? You should try looking at your own political posts from time to time. ;)
