VPN usage in the UK is going to jump exponentially. I mean seriously, if you sign up for this scheme you're an imbecile. Not because I particularly distrust the UK government in some sort of sinister way, but because it's going to get hacked, it's going to end up in the public domain. And it'll be schadenfreude when it's a politician.

Saying that, I don't think the UK is going to be the only country to sign up to it (or something similar) either.

I can see at least some states in the US (like Utah) watching this closely as a model to copy.

It's no surprise I've even seen TV ads for VPN services lately.

I've even noticed VPN companies running adverts on football hoardings recently as well.

Nobody knows. At the moment normal websites (that also happen to have porn on them) are exempt. But they're more likely to now start regulating themselves (like Tumblr). The porn industry is quite deceptive in that it looks big but is actually quite small (write your own jokes, Jim...) - the vast majority of streaming sites are owned by the same people. I'm guessing the small independent sites will just be blocked, like a number of foreign sites currently are due to GDPR (though they've done that themselves) and torrents.

Everything can be circumvented very easily with a VPN. Tor for example is fine if you just want to read articles (it's too slow for anything else).

I think stuff you'll be fine for the time being but they're going to make further changes in the future to address it.

With that won't you still be able to use those free web VPN's like 'hide my ass' to access porn. My brother was using it to access bit torrent stuff not sure if he's still doing it but this really seems like a totally ineffectual step.

Trying to ban VPN will be massively anti-business as well since many companies use VPN solutions to allow employees to securely work from remote locations.

They can bring in a business VPN License that allows the use for corporate reasons.

Then people will just pay £100 to make a company and that company will need a VPN for corporate reasons.

There are so many workarounds that they'll never keep up, this is just a waste of effort, like most of their ideas to do with the internet.

I'm surprised any political party would go through with this, it's the best way to lose 50% of the vote.

I don't necessarily mean banning paid for VPNs but you can literally go to the link below and use a free proxy without installing any software or configuring anything in your browser's options menu. Surely those pages will have to be blocked.

They wont loose much vote for it, most people wont give a gooseberry fool about it as doesn't impact them, a chunk will be glad of because "think of the children" and the other lot probably didn't vote tory anyway,

Give it time, to use a VPN you'll have to register with the government as a business.

I would imagine whereas before if you were using a VPN or TOR you probably went on some sort of security agency watchlist, or at least peaked their interest. Now millions are going to end up using it, making that a win for the terrorists and others up to nefarious means.

Now in 2019 you've got to use Tor to read the news, have a wank, and watch the football at 3pm (probably).

I think there will always be work arounds but the governments aim will be to reduce access rather than totally stop it. If you're some 15 year old kid you're not going to have £100 a year to pay for a VPN. That said at worse you're going to have to copy a load of stuff from you're dodgy mate whose parents don't give a gooseberry fool and lets him do whatever he wants on his computer.

We've definitely got different perceptions of the male swing vote that allows the tories to win general elections. From the ones I know and work with this would stop them voting tory.

This scheme is also backed by Labour. Not sure about the Liberals.
