Broadcasting regulations already cover that stuff very well as they can only show boobs and arse. Maybe A BIT OF BUSH creeps in now and again but nothing of any note ever happens. They’d be in deep gooseberry fool if it did.

And the general public would support such a move because everyone knows "If you've nothing to hide, you've got nothing to worry about"

Especially if they made out that only terrorists and peados use VPNs, it's a sure fire way to get the public behind any draconian law they could imagine.

I'm not sure an ISP can identify who's VPN you're using though, just the fact that you're using one.

Currently, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to add an id to VPN protocols and then ban all other protocols. I think the only thing stopping governments is the amount of resources it would require to properly police. Do they really want to create a police unit to scan the internet and check every VPN. You'd also have to keep up with new types of technology used to circumvent whatever you were doing.

The reason this implementation has been privatised from the offset is because the government knows from reams of expert advise already given to them that it's impossible to police fully. So if you're going to fail anyway, just give that responsibility to a private enterprise that can do at least some of the job, while they make a great bloody whack of £ in the process. Them blame them instead of taking responsibility for the issues if a mass scale hack occurs (as already has happened noted by the newspaper with this article and the winning tender - if it even was put out to tender and not handed to a monopoly through lobbying) or the process in some other way fails - or is technology impossible to enforce in the first place, as it will only ever apply to websites under UK jurisdiction. It's just ticking boxes to "lead the way to protecting children online" as per the last Government manifesto, even if it doesn't work (which it won't). I'm really bothered it's not just eroding civil liberties, it's handing that data stewarding over to a vested interest that can and will abuse it for commercial purposes while doing the bare minimum to protect that information, because it will never be more profitable to do so. What could possibly be impartial and steward-like about that? How is this safeguarding the people the government exists to serve? This is the same pattern of shittiness demonstrated by all acts of privatisation, they benefit the Tories in checking off election pledges, and moreso the private enterprise. Does this protect children? It does strawberry float all to protect children, who are more Google-savvy than the vast majority of adults, and just makes it more difficult for those over 16 to access content they are legally free to look at to keep their balls and/or vagina/mind healthy.

It's a joke.

I wish I believed the government realised that it's going to fail.

From my view the problem is the government is going to keep trying and each time they fail, they get more draconian, and you're right there will probably always be ways to get around what ever they come up with but at what point does the risk outweigh the reward. I could totally see them requiring all computer used by private citizens requiring some kind of government monitoring system in the future, they'd probably offer some work around if you work for a large company or are doing hobbyist stuff but they might still want to periodically check what you're doing with your machine.

I still think that the majority of the population will probably back these schemes like they have with the DNA database. Also the systems will be hacked and peoples information will leak as it does anyway and we'll all get an email telling us to change our passwords and for the most point we'll get on with our lives.

I got an email just earlier about the most recent hack: 80 million accounts with plain-text passwords leaked all at once. It's not even in the top 10 on Have I Been Pwned. Anyone who thinks a UK-wide database is safe from breaches is a naïve idiot.

I had a number of emails from have I been pwned. I've actually been on five lists.
Kickstarter, Onliner Spambot, Exploit. In, QuinStreet, Last FM.

I was sure I had one for Linked In as well. I've made sure to change all my passwords and got pretty suspicious. But people still use these services. When this porn list gets hacked people will act outraged and then go back to living their lives in a couple of weeks.

Thing is though the porn list won't just be a list of usernames and passwords and maybe credit card numbers, things that can call be changed without anything more than mild inconvenience.
It'll be real names, physical addresses, date of birth, potentially copies of official ID. Everything an identity thief needs and not things you can just go around changing at the drop of a hat.

If nothing else, imagine extortion based on this info. Pay up or we'll send your wife your Pornhub search history.

Yeah, this isn't the end of whatever their plan is, it's just the first step. And they've picked porn because people will be too embarrassed to publicly defend it.
Later on it will be easy for them to extend their block to other non-porn websites as they see fit. It's all about them having control, which they used to have with the newspapers.

I can totally see them forcing us to use the same login system for other government pages, like paying car tax. And further down the line why even do it on a per-website basis? just get us to log in once when we open a web browser.

May is being very clear, we can choose either censorship or loss of privacy (or option 3: vote for a better government).

Will GRcade need to come under AgeID because of the Lizzy Vaid thread and the pure filth contained therein?

In the one in a trillion event this ever happened, and as much as it would pain me, I'd rather pull the plug than harvest your data.

If AgeID were forced on this site I would just move server back to Texas where anything goes really, as long as you're white, which thankfully I am.

But then we would be back in the dark ages of global roundtrip latency and your nudes would be a bit slow.

Edit: Ironically due to Brexit we may well not fall under UK jurisdiction anyway so this government has already sorted us out. It will be interesting to see what the technicalities are with regards to hosted geography or ownership/ISP etc.

Google is already very upset we regularly feature "lewd and provocative poses" and "sheer and see-through clothing" on pages that serve ads... and even on pages that don't serve ads, despite their bots insisting they do (which is really quite annoying - all [NSFW] threads have no ads, I wrote the strawberry floating algorithm for it myself - although Karl rewrote it to actually work).

Half the point of us moving to .co.uk was to avert SOPA or whatever it was called before that and increasingly I have doubts about even that.

GTLDs can't popularise soon enough. Although really its down to where they are regulated.
