In an unsurprising development, PS5 sales have increased in the UK...

PlayStation 5 sales jumped 75% in the UK last week, Gfk has revealed.

In terms of revenue, PS5 is up 63% week-on-week.

It follows the first temporary price drop for Sony's console, with retailers selling the machine for as low as £399. Some retailers, such as Amazon and GAME, also included a game in addition to the price drop, with titles such as LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Forspoken and Saints Row available.

The price cut is temporary, with the console set to rise back to its previous cost later this month.

It's worth noting that unofficial pricing activity around PS5 kicked off in June in the UK. The average price of the console was £423 last week, which is actually only 6% lower than the week before when it was £451.

The Standard PS5 console was the biggest winner with sales up 205% in units and 162% in revenue (average selling price went from £491 to £421). This version of the console accounted for 73% of sales. The price cut played a big part in that, but GfK says that unofficial retail bundles featuring Hogwarts Legacy, LEGO Star Wars and Gran Turismo 7 were also popular.

Overall, last week was the third best week of the year for PS5. The console's best weeks came in February due to a popular God of War Ragnarok hardware bundle.

Wish they revealed actual sales data rather than 'sales jump x%', because it makes it sound more impressive than it possibly is. 'Sales of my new book were up 100% compared to last week! I sold 2 copies.'

Definitely, KK - without actual sales figures being shared it's hard to build up much of a picture.

2009's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and 2012's Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 were two of the best-selling video games in the UK last month.

Both games had their matchmaking fixed on Xbox platforms, and were also discounted in the Xbox Ultimate Game Sale, which sent Modern Warfare 2 to No.5, while Black Ops 2 returns at No.4.

Black Ops 2 was on sale for £11.99 and Modern Warfare 2 could be picked up for £12.49.

Both Xbox and PlayStation ran aggressive digital game sales, which have transformed the chart. Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 jumped up to No.2 and No.3 respectively. Both of Rockstar's games were discounted on all Xbox and PlayStation platforms, with the PS4 versions on sale for under £15.

But it was FIFA 23 that was No.1 for the month.

In total, 2.36 million digital and physical AAA video games were sold in the UK during July, up 31% over the year before.

1.66 million games were sold via digital download stores (up 40% year-on-year), while 701,000 were sold via physical outlets (up 12%).

The highest charting game that was actually released in 2023 was Hogwarts Legacy in sixth position.

In terms of new game released in July, the highest charting title is Pikmin 4 at No.23. Nintendo doesn't share digital sales with the charts, so it may be that the game would have charted higher if we knew the download figures. If we just look at physical sales for the month, Pikmin 4 was the fifth best-selling game.

All software data is courtesy of GSD.

Over in hardware, and sales of games consoles in July dropped 7% month-on-month in the UK, according to GfK panel data. However, compared with July 2022, sales are actually up 7%.

PlayStation 5 remains the market leading format, with sales once again driven by pricing activity on the standard version of the console. PS5 sold very slightly more units in July than it did in June. By the end of July, PS5 sales are up 68% year-to-date. That's already jumped further in August.

The same isn't true for Nintendo Switch, which saw sales slide 15% in July compared with the month before. Year-to-date, Switch sales are down 8.5% for the first seven months of the year.

In third position is Xbox Series S and X. Microsoft's console saw sales tumble 12% in July compared with June. So far this year, Xbox console sales are down 22.8%.

As an aside, sales of PS4 are up 331% so far this year.

Finally, nearly 550,000 accessores were sold in the UK during July, a drop of 3% over June and 3% over July last year.

The charts are dominated by Sony DualSense controllers. The White edition retakes No.1 from the Black version, while Starlight Blue rises 14 places to No.18 and Grey Camo jumps five places to No.5. The Cosmic Red edition also jumped 11 positions to No.20. The controllers have benefitted from strong sales of PS5, plus some pricing activity at major retailers. The rest of the Top Ten is made up of Xbox controllers and Turtle Beach headsets, with Ear Force 50X at No.7 and Ear Force 50P at No.10.

UK GSD July 2023 Top 10 (Digital + Physical)

Position Title
1. FIFA 23 (EA)
2. Grand Theft Auto 5 (Rockstar)
3. Red Dead Redemption 2 (Rockstar)
4. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (Activision Blizzard)
5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – 2009 Edition (Activision Blizzard)
6. Hogwarts Legacy (Warner Bros)
7. F123 (EA)
8. Minecraft (Mojang)
9. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – 2022 Edition (Activision Blizzard)
10. Diablo 4 (Activision Blizzard)

Wonder how the Xbox Series X price increase to £479.99 impacts the next batch of sales data...

Even with a sale, not sure what it says about the state of the games industry that 5 of your top games are old titles, some dating back to the PS3/360. 'Oh gooseberry fool, I've bought the wrong Modern Warfare 2'

I'm guessing that much of the consumer base has no idea about Microsoft's many developer acquisitions and, until we start seeing plenty of Xbox-only games arriving, it'll stay that way. Over the next five years or so I think that things will change but, as ever, it's all about what games are available to play.

A look at what's happening over in Germany:

GERMAN GAMING MARKET: GAMES CONSOLES AND PREMIUM SEGMENTS GROW SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE 1ST HALF OF 2023

The German gaming market is still at a high level - and was able to grow significantly in the first half of 2023. This is the result of a joint special evaluation by GfK and GfK Entertainment on the occasion of this year's Gamescom for the gaming hardware and accessories segments. As the representative sales data shows, sales of game consoles increased by 90 percent compared to the same period last year. In addition to the still well-performing Nintendo Switch, these gains were mainly driven by the PS5. After the supply bottlenecks of the past two years, the Sony bestseller is now available nationwide and has sold three times as many copies in 2023 as in the first six months of 2022.

Image

NEXT HARDWARE REPLACEMENT CYCLE IS UPCOMING
Overall, the gaming markets have grown significantly as a result of the pandemic, during which many people have upgraded their hardware or invested in such offerings for the first time. Interest in new products is correspondingly subdued at the moment, with gaming laptops (-13 percent) and desktop PCs (-20 percent) losing sales between January and June 2023, for example. However, the replacement cycle for the products purchased at the beginning of Corona seems to be slowly starting again. A buyer survey as part of the gfknewron consumer platform showed that the proportion of people who have already replaced their working gaming notebook with a new device is growing steadily. In addition, laptops from the premium range are increasingly in demand. This relatively small market segment was able to increase by one percent in the price range from 1,600 euros and even by 25 percent in the price range from 3,000 euros.

PREMIUM GROWING ACROSS SEGMENTS
It is also worth taking a look at the premium offers for many other gaming products. While the business with accessories fell by one percent compared to the same period last year, tenkeyless keyboards (+13 percent) and Bluetooth mice (+36 percent), for example, posted a noticeable increase. A similar picture emerges for the monitors. It is true that these recorded a drop in sales of eight percent in the first half of the year. Nevertheless, a significant increase of 64 percent could be measured for the ultra-premium devices with a refresh rate of 360 Hertz and higher. Contrary to inflation and increased living costs, gaming is defying the general trend, at least in part - and gamers are still willing to invest in high-priced products.

PHYSICAL VIDEO GAME MARKET IMPROVES BY TWO PERCENT
Separately from the hardware, the physical video game market was also scrutinized as part of the evaluation. Despite the great competition from digital offers, retailers are in the black here (+2 percent). The most popular were the action-adventure "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom", the fantasy RPG "Hogwarts Legacy" set in the "Harry Potter" universe and the football simulation "FIFA 23".

GAMES MERCHANDISE IN HIGH DEMAND
As the data from the merchandise panel from GfK Entertainment shows, the three top titles of the current year were able to sell significantly more licensed products than in 2022. While 27 percent more "FIFA" items and 33 percent more "Harry Potter" goods were sold, sales of "The Legend of Zelda" products increased by an impressive 81 percent. Offers from the toy, stationery and accessories categories were particularly popular.

PS5 sales jumped 42% in the UK during August | UK Monthly Charts

Red Dead Redemption returns to the Top Five

It was a solid August for video games in the UK, driven by continued strong sales of PS5.

According to GfK, over 135,000 games consoles were sold last month, a rise of 22% over July and 8% up over August last year.

PlayStation 5 posted a 42% jump in sales month-on-month. The console benefited substantially from aggressive price discounting and bundles across the summer months. Overall year-to-date, PS5 sales are now up 60%.

Nintendo Switch is showing signs of slowdown this year, but it's still holding strong. Sales dropped 5% month-on-month during August, while overall the console's sales are down 10% year-to-date.

There was some growth for Xbox during August, with Series S and X sales up 7% compared with July. It still trails Switch and PS5, and sales are down nearly 23% year-to-date. However, the games market should expect a bit of a fightback from Microsoft heading into the last months of the year, with the release of Starfield and Forza Motorsport to come.

The success of PS5 also boosted accessories. GfK data says that 565,309 add-on products were sold in August, which is up 3.5% compared with July and 1% up over August last year.

The Top Six selling accessories last month were all for PS5. The first four were all DualSense Controllers (White, Midnight Black, Cosmic Red and Starlight Blue), followed by the DualSense Charging Station and then the Grey Camo DualSense controller.

Looking at the GSD charts, 1.75 million games were sold, which is a drop of 2.2% compared with August last year. But actually, that doesn't tell the full story.

FIFA 23 was the best-selling game of August, according to GSD data. It was driven by a surge in sales for the Nintendo Switch version of the game, which had been discounted on Nintendo eShop.

But it wasn't the real No.1. Baldur's Gate 3 would almost certainly have taken the crown for August, but Larian is one of the publishers missing from the GSD panel, so unfortunately it doesn't make the chart at all. It's reasonable to assume that with Baldur's Gate 3, August would have been a far bigger month.

The other big new release of the month was Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon. Armored Core is not a franchise that has a major following in the UK, but the series is created by Dark Souls and Elden Ring developer From Software, which has now become a household name. As a result, this new Armored Core has significantly outperformed its predecessors.

Rockstar had a great month with three games in the Top Ten. One of those games was Red Dead Redemption, which made its way to PS4 and Nintendo Switch during August. As a result, the game is back in the charts at No.5.

Speaking of comebacks, Quake 2 is back in the charts nearly 26 years since it was first released. The game has been remastered and updated, complete with new levels, and as a result it reached No.12 last month. Quake 2's data is missing its Nintendo Switch sales, so the game may have charted slightly higher.

UK GSD August 2023 Top 10 (Digital + Physical)

Position Title
1. FIFA 23 (EA)
2. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon (Bandai Namco)
3. Grand Theft Auto 5 (Rockstar)
4. Red Dead Redemption 2 (Rockstar)
5. Red Dead Redemption (Rockstar)
6. Hogwarts Legacy (Warner Bros)
7. Grand Theft Auto Online (Rockstar)
8. F1 23 (EA)
9. Minecraft (Mojang)
10. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – 2022 Edition (Activision Blizzard)

The launch of Starfield and a new version of the Xbox Series S significantly boosted sales of Microsoft consoles.

GfK data reveals that Xbox Series S and X sales jumped 76% week-on-week for the seven days ending September 2nd.

GfK games boss Dorian Bloch says that the week is the biggest this year (so far) for Xbox Series S and X hardware sales in the UK. Meanwhile, the week ending September 9th is currently the second best week.

This was partially due to the launch of the new Xbox Series S 1TB edition, which accounted for 24% of all Xbox consoles sold during that week. The new version of Xbox Series S is roughly £50 more expensive than the standard Series S model.

But the jump in Xbox console sales was also due to the launch of Starfield. The Bethesda game officially launched on September 6th, but it was available on September 1st to those who were willing to pay for the Premium Edition. As a result, the standard Xbox Series X console posted a 46% increase in sales for the week ending September 2nd in the UK.

"It is currently the best week this year for Series X," Bloch says. "And the following week [ending September 9th] is the fourth best for X. In-between is week one and week six, which were early year blips."

Bloch says that the Xbox consoles overall had a decent showing for the week ending September 9th, with the new Series S 1TB model accounting for 20% of sales.

It follows a slow year for Xbox hardware sales, which up until the end of August was down nearly 23% year-to-date in the UK.

Glad these sale are being driven by a single player game; video game companies take note. I'm not surprised at all by the sales bump, the amount they seem to have spent on marketing must have been enormous; you cannot escape Starfield ads at the moment and this has been the case for an extended period.

Video game sales across Europe were down in September compared with the year before, according to the latest figures from GSD.

September 2022 was a five-week month, and as a result the numbers appear down 16% over September 2023. But this year was a four-week month. And so if we compare week 36 to week 39 (the like-for-like sales weeks), overall game sales are down just over 1%.

The main reason for the drop was this year's EA Sports FC 24. EA's new football game brand has got off to a strong start, but it is 10% down compared with the launch of FIFA 23 last year. It's worth noting that FIFA 23 had a particularly strong launch. If we compare EA Sports FC 24's launch with FIFA 22, and sales are actually only down 3.7%. EA had anticipated some initial decline as a result of the name change.

EA Sports FC 24 sold best in the UK, and was No.1 in all major European markets.

There was also a drop for the other big sports game of the month. NBA 2K24's opening three weeks on sale are down 17% compared with NBA 2K23.

The second biggest game of the month was also a new IP in the form of Xbox's Starfield. It was a strong launch for the game, which was also available day and date on Game Pass. However, the game couldn't unseat Forza Horizon 5 as Xbox's biggest game launch this geneation. Starfield's first four weeks on sale are 13% below what Forza Horizon 5 managed.

Of course, Game Pass data is unavailable and it's impossible to know how the game performed overall without this insight.

Starfield was No.2 in the UK and Germany. Whereas NBA 2K24 was No.2 in Italy and Spain. In France it was The Crew Motorfest, a game developed in the country, that claimed the No.2 spot.

Indeed, The Crew Motorfest (No.4) bucked the trend in September, with launch sales up over its predecessor. For its first three weeks on sale, Ubisoft's racing game posted a 6.5% sales improvement compared with the launch of 2018's The Crew 2.

The final new game we've not mentioned is Mortal Kombat 1, which is in No.5 spot across Europe. The Warner Bros game's first three week sales are down nearly 39% when compared to 2019's Mortal Kombat 11.

PS5 continues to dominate across Europe

Once again comparing the same four week sales period in September, sales of games consoles were up nearly 38% compared with the same four weeks in 2022. Not every European market is tracked (Germany and the UK is missing), but overall 416,000 games consoles were sold across the participating markets.

This was driven by PS5, with sales of Sony's console up 175% over the same period last year. There were still strong stock shortages of PS5 in September 2022.

Nintendo Switch sales were down 28% compared with last September, while Xbox Series S and X sales are down 35% for that four-week period.

In terms of accessories, 1.1 milion add-on products were sold in September, with Sony's PS5 DualSense Controller driving sales alongside the Xbox Series Wireless controller. There was also 1.11 million points cards/wallet cards sold over the four week period.

    5. Mortal Kombat 1 (Warner Bros)

1.6 million digital games were sold in the UK during October (GSD data), a drop of 24% over the year before.

Meanwhile, GfK data shows that physical game sales are up slighty (+8%) to 1.08 million games sold.

The main reason for the overall drop is the fact that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launched in October last year, whereas this year's Call of Duty landed in November.

There was also a drop in sales for this year's football game. EA Sports FC 24's first week sales, looking at GfK and GSD numbers together, are 16% lower than last year's FIFA 23. 2022's FIFA game was the last one by EA, and also tied into the World Cup that took place in December, which led to a strong opening month for the game.

The best-selling new game of the month was Spider-Man 2 from Sony. By combining GfK and GSD sales together, we can see that the first two weeks are nearly 9% lower than 2018's original Spider-Man, but 94% bigger than 2020's Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Compared with last year's big PlayStation game, God of War Ragnarok, the first two weeks of sales are 2% higher for Spider-Man 2. Note: God of War Ragnarok was available on PS4 and PS5, whereas Spider-Man 2 is purely a PS5 game.

Next on the new game list is Assassin's Creed Mirage, which was the third biggest digital game of the month and the fourth biggest physical release. The game's sales are 58% lower than the opening four weeks for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which released in 2020. However, this was always billed as a smaller Assassin's Creed, with gameplay similar to older titles in the series. The first four weeks of sales for Mirage are almost identical to the first four weeks of 2018's Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

Elsewhere, Super Mario Bros Wonder is the third biggest physical game of the month, but isn't in the digital charts as Nintendo does not share download figures with the charts company.

In terms of boxed sales alone, Super Mario Bros Wonder is the biggest Mario launch on Nintendo Switch, with 3,000 more sales after two weeks than 2017's Super Mario Odyssey and 13,000 more than 2020's Super Mario 3D All-Stars. With digital, it is very likely this is the biggest Mario launch in UK history. Nintendo has already announced it is Europe's biggest Super Mario game launch.

Also new in the charts for October is EA Sports UFC 5, which is at No.4 in the digital charts but No.33 in physical. Lords of the Fallen is at No.5 in digital and No.17 in physical. Sonic Superstars is at No.26 in digital and No.9 in physical, and the game sold significantly better in a box than it did as a download.

Just missing out on the Top Ten is Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 1, which makes No.11 in digital and No.15 in physical.

Finally, Red Dead Redemption makes the physical charts at No.10 due to the arrival of the boxed version for Nintendo Switch and PS4. The game was released on these platforms digitally back in August.

PS5 and Xbox console sales dip in October

There was a slight drop in console hardware sales in the UK, according to GfK figures. Sales dropped 10% month-on-month to 176,022 devices sold (panel data).

There was a slight dip of 4% in sales of PS5, although it was still a very strong month for Sony's console. 56% of PS5s sold in October were for the official EA Sports FC 24 hardware bundle. The Spider-Man 2 edition of the console accounted for 6% of sales.

The big decline was for Xbox Series S and X, which suffered a sales drop of 33%. The console had a strong September due to the release of a new Xbox Series S model and the hit game Starfield, which explains the month-on-month decline.

Microsoft’s platforms still narrowly manages to stay ahead of Nintendo Switch, which is once again in third spot. However, Nintendo Switch sales did rise 15% over the month before, helped by the launch of Super Mario Bros Wonder. However, the new Mario red OLED version of the console was only 6.2% of Switch sales last month.

As we revealed last week, PS5 has had a 51% market over the last six months due to strong sales activity over the summer. Xbox has seen its market share drop to 23%, while Nintendo Switch has fallen heavily to 25%. GfK boss Dorian Bloch says there is a lot to play for over the final three months of the year, which tends to account for over half of all console sales during a calendar year.

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/spider-ma ... hly-charts

According to unofficial estimates provided by a user on the Install-base forum, sales of PS5 are up roughly 58% year-on-year in the U.K., and Xbox Series down 40% YoY: https://www.installbaseforum.com/forums ... -mom.2135/

Over 4.55 million video games were sold during November in the UK, a drop of 3% over the same period in 2022.

This is according to GSD data, which tracks digital and physical video game sales.

The drop is due to a weaker release slate in November this year. Last year saw major launches including God of War Ragnarök on PlayStation platforms and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet for Nintendo Switch.

There was one major title that helped keep sales strong, and that was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Activision Blizzard's shooter was comfortably No.1 for the month. Last year's Call of Duty released in October, which meant that Call of Duty had a stronger November this year than the year before.

However, despite efforts from Activision to position Modern Warfare 3 as a full sequel to last year's game, fans were not so convinced and first three weeks of sales for Modern Warfare 3 are just under 38% lower compared with last year's Modern Warfare 2.

Another decent release last month was the arrival of Hogwarts Legacy on Nintendo Switch. Sales of the Warner Bros game jumped 100% month-on-month due to Switch release (plus a bit of Black Friday discounting).

EA Sports FC 23 sold slightly fewer in November compared with FIFA 23 last year, but it was close. EA's new football title saw some strong discounts during the Back Friday sales period.

It was another big month for game sales over the Black Friday week, with 1.66 million games sold in the UK, led by EA Sports FC 24. Compared with Black Friday last year, sales are very slightly up by 0.8%, which is impressive when you consider the general lack of new releases.

Elsewhere, Football Manager 2024 makes No.6, with sales down 4% compared with last year's title. The only other new game of note is RoboCop: Rogue City, which reached No.11 in the charts for November.

PS5 delivers big month for the console market

Moving over to GfK data, over 486,000 games consoles (panel data) was sold in the UK during November, a sharp rise of 176% month-on-month, and up 32% over November last year.

This was due to heavy discounting around Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo consoles over the Black Friday period. It was really the first Black Friday where PlayStation 5 was able to participate (the console was almost entirely sold out during this period in 2022, 2021 and 2020).

Sony's machine accounted for practically half of the games consoles sold during November. PS5 sales were up 149% month-on-month, and up 126% over last November.

In second place for the month was Xbox Series S and X, which saw a hefty 231% sales jump month-on-month, again due to Black Friday discounting. Compared with November 2022, Xbox sales are up 4%.

Nintendo Switch took third spot, with sales up 175% month-on-month but down 19% over the same period last year.

Year-to-date, console sales are up 12% over the year before, driven by improved sales for PS5.

Elsewhere, 1.275 million peripherals and accessories were sold in the UK across November (GfK panel data), which is a rise of 118% over October but down 3.5% over last November.

The new PlayStation Portal accessory for PS5 debuts at No.5. The product sold out at UK retail last month.

...The UK would have helped the Xbox total, but the PlayStation 5 is still more popular here so, proportionally, it would’ve made little difference.

I've started to read rumours that Microsoft is planning to launch their next gen console in 2025, whilst Sony are expected to release a PS5 Pro next year and therefore likely to be much further away with PS6. This makes sense for both manufacturers in context of these sales figures. Microsoft look to leverage their acquisitions by launching a technically superior console, whilst Sony looks to build on it's stronger install base.

For stat fans, PS5 sold 24% of X/S lifetime sales in one month.
Xbox X/S sold 1.5% of PS5 lifetime sales in one month. I'm honestly very surprised to see such a gulf. I've typically preferred Sony's offerings, but it feels like the difference between the two is very narrow.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

Yeah, my local Tesco got rid of their games, films, music - and nearly all magazines - a few weeks ago. There is now no store near me that sells games.

I get my games from Argos, nowhere else around here sells them anyways.

Hogwarts Legacy the best selling physical release of 2023, with EA Sports FC 24 in the second spot.

Hogwarts Legacy ends 2023 as the UK’s biggest physical video game.

It means EA Sports FC 24 was unable to catch Warner Bros' Harry Potter spin-off. Hogwarts Legacy launched in February on PS5, PC and Xbox Series S and X, while EA’s football title landed in September.

It is the first time in a decade that EA’s football game, previously operating under the FIFA licence, isn’t the UK’s top boxed game. The last time this happened was in 2013 when Grand Theft Auto 5 took the top spot.

This is the first year EA's football game has operated under its own branding, and not the FIFA IP, in 30 years. This is after Electronic Arts and the footballing body failed to agree new terms. Although EA Sports FC 24's sales are down over more recent FIFA titles, it remains a huge title and when digital data comes in later this week, it's expected to still be No.1 overall.

Hogwarts Legacy's boxed sales came mostly on PS5, which accounted for well over half the title's sales this year. The second biggest platform was PS4, followed by Nintendo Switch. The PS4 version arrived in May with the Nintendo Switch edition reaching shelves in November.

For 2023, 12.76 million boxed video games were sold in the UK, according to Gfk. That's a drop of nearly 5% over 2022.

Really pleased to see just a 5% drop; I'd feared it'd be greater than that. It feels like perhaps more folk are seeing - on consoles - physical as a cheaper and longer-term option than perhaps digital is. I fully expect the platform holders to try and sideline physical over the next couple of years, though.
