You couldn't make the timing up - Ed delivering that speech in the same week as he jetted across the Atlantic while Gaza was in flames, just so he could get a 30 minute 'brush-by' photo-op with Obama. The man is not on the same planet as everyone else if he genuinely can't see the juxtaposition. Not even the most basic level of self-awareness!

Well, we already know that the whole Syria conflict is Ed's fault, he probably didn't want to get blamed for this one too.

I've never really understood such accusations, there are always terrible world events taking place at any one time and politicians will always visit world leaders for photo-ops. It's not like Ed Miliband is personally going to achieve what the UN can't and bring about an end to the conflict.

It's more that he made a speech saying "there’s more to politics than the photo op" then flew across the Atlantic to have a photo op with Obama. Somewhat hypocritical.

Pretty shitty life if you're a kid in that area. You're going to get blown up, it's just a case of whether Hamas or the IDF do it. :dread:

Over a thousand children injured, over a hundred dead.

I struggle to think of words strong enough to describe this - I don't think "awful" comes close to covering it. As Mori said - horribly depressing.

 The government are being very shady over the fracking business. Safety issues aside, the way the government are acting is dodgy as strawberry float, to the point where they are flat out lying on Ch4.

Probably about how it's all OK, nothing to see here, big savings for plebs in the future, and the DECC is a robust, effective body which'll make sure no nasty chemicals get in your tummy. It is not a money-making scheme for unscrupulous firms who got the bum's rush from France.

Pretty much. Claiming prices will come down despite being proved that they won't. At least they got out of him what the "exceptional circumstances" means for fracking in national parks. Apparently it means "If fracking will bring in more profit than the park on it's own". Nice :|

Gotta love how the government just ploughs on with its plans, not giving a strawberry float what the public think or want.

Where there's money to be made, you can bet your ass the government will be there, regardless of whether it's good for the country and its people or not. strawberry float sake. :fp:

I'm in favour, mostly for energy security reasons. Even if it has no effect on prices at all at least it will provide some extra insulation against international markets and tenuous political situation with Russia. Unlike my parents, I have never in my life lived through periods of prolonged power cuts and I do not want to start now.

Of course, it's not going to come a massive surprise when foreign companies move in to exploit/buyout the UK's resources, yet again. *sigh* Why do our politicians have more loyalty to the pound than the flag? You'd expect people who dedicated their lives to politics to be more patriotic than normal, not less, yet this government has continued the trend of selling off national assets and treasures.

Given past handing of such things, we should not expect anything other than to be massively short changed. Shame we don't have leaders who care more about their country and less about their clueless and broken ideology of unaccountable and uncontrolled markets.

I'm not in favour, because of our reliance on groundwater making any contamination of that potentially disastrous, and the fact that 95% of the UK's shale is *under* groundwater used for drinking. I also question the claims that over the amount of gas that can be mined using the method, and I suspect everyone is grossly exaggerating. I'll be genuinely surprised if fracking was still a thing in the UK by the end of this decade.

Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska and 2008 US vice-presidential candidate, has launched a subscription-based online television channel.

It features a countdown to the end of Barack Obama's presidency and promises to go ''beyond the soundbites'' of mainstream media.

I'm fully in support of fracking for now. There's fuck-all analytical evidence that it causes major harm to the environment, and frankly we need the energy security. It could lower energy bills, too. If it does turn out that there's a bad impact on the environment (ie. a proper independent study comes to such a conclusion) then I'm more than happy to change my mind, but the protests so far have been hysterical and motivated by ideology over facts, IMO. Trouble is, it's so difficult to get your hands on cold, hard facts when myopic bias and ideology are so prevalent on both sides.
