I used to shop for games at Grainger quite a lot as they were always pretty competitively priced but I stopped going there so much when they wouldn’t honour trade in prices quoted from their website. Often the offer you’d get in store was outlandishly lower than what their website stated.

Prime example a year or two back after finishing the last of the Fallout 4 DLC I wanted to trade the game in, their website quoted £18 cash or £20 in store but when I took it to the shop I was only offered £4 cash or £6 in store, so I took it round the corner to CeX and got £15 for it.

21 of 67 stores were emailed this morning and told not to open as they had been closed.

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2018 ... ing-closed

"We regret to inform you that we require you to close your store imminently due to the ongoing issues surrounding the business's critical financial situation," said the email which was provided to Eurogamer.

"Your store will unfortunately be closed as of today. Please DO NOT open your store this morning."

Several of those stores I phoned this morning and they did not answer. One did, and the person who answered corroborated the closure and said they had been made redundant as of this morning.

List of closed stores,
Worksop, Northwhich, Sale, Breeston, Salford, Altrincham, Widness, Stretford, Whitley Bay, Wakefield, Castloeford, Selby, Dewsbury, Hyde, Oldham, Thornaby, Huddersfield, Durham, Washington, Billingham and Chesterfield.

Website is down too,

Sponsored the GMAs a few years back

http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2011/10/how-an ... rds-event/
https://www.destructoid.com/games-media ... 4806.phtml

The English retailer brought bikini clad women, midgets, a hideous orange hummer and the cherry on top -- Grainger Games' very own brand of condoms. Because all of those things simply scream videogame journalism. Those things on their own are random and tasteless, but it was the actions of the retail chain's representatives that crossed the line. They heckled speakers, flicked condoms into people's food, interrupted the host and according to Xbox LIVE editor, Daniel Maher, "two of them attempted to physically and verbally intimidate [him]." Classy stuff.

ALL stores now told to close

UPDATE 29TH MARCH: Eurogamer has been reliably informed all Grainger Games' remaining 46 shops have been told, this morning, to close. They received the same closure email sent out yesterday.

Beeston closed yesterday, that was my second closest Granger, I was happy though that Nottingham my closest was safe as I have got a lot of stuff from there, only to learn there all gone today, this totally sucks I feel sorry for all of the people who work for them.

I'm surprised there hasn't at least been a sale since that would pull in at least some cash for the administrators.
I wonder if they plan to just sell the stock to Game/CEX or even re-open the website and have a sale through there.

I imagine with all that stock they will get at least £2 in store credit.

In all seriousness, where do the games go? I’d rebuild some semblance of a library if there were plenty of pre-owned cheapies on the go.

They'll probably end up in a wholesale auction or something that indie shops will bid on for stock.

It wouldn't surprise me if the games sold for around that much a copy, although you'd have buy in bulk.

Suppliers probably have a ‘Retention of Title’ clause in their Supply Chain contracts, meaning they hold possession of goods until they’re paid for. One probable reason that there wasn’t a fire sale.

I can see the retention of title being true for new but still surprised the second hand stuff wasn't fire sold and my local was 80percent second hand.

The problem with that is that Grainger Games gut all their new games prior to sale. So suppliers will be receiving back opened copies of any unsold games rather than new and sealed copies.

Something like Music Magpie might buy them as well to shove on eBay.

I have been to wholesale auctions and a lot of electrical stuff does turn up there (particularly old Dyson hoovers, oddly) but I've never seen video games, unfortunately.
