DS sells over 10 million in UK

Nintendo's DS handheld has sold over 10 million units in the UK, according to data from GfK Chart-Track, becoming the best-selling console in the region's history.

The console has passed the 10 million mark faster than Sony's PlayStation 2, and Nintendo estimates 1-in-6 people in the UK have a DS.

"Nintendo's Touch Generations range of software, which has been expanding the definition of videogame, has resonated strongly with people of all ages, extending its appeal to a non-traditional gaming audience, which now sees people aged between five and 95 picking up and playing Nintendo DS consoles," offered Nintendo.

"The achievements of titles such as Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training: How Old Is You Brain? and More Brain Training alongside recent launches including 100 Classic Book Collection and 42 All-Time Classics, has seen the Nintendo DS system significantly expand the audience traditionally associated with videogames."

The system was first released in the region in March 2005.

I've literally lost count of how many DSes I've bought, gotta be close to double figures.

You gotta hand it to Nintendo though, they know how to make things desirable with only the slightest changes.

Yeah, it's not really 1 in 6, with all the duplicate purchases - probably closer to 1 in 10. Maybe 1 in 8, I dunno.

Still, this all seemed pretty unlikely when Nintendo first revealed the console at E3.

Yeah, it's easy to look at such a figure and think that means ten million owners, but with any game console it doesn't quite work out like that, particularly the ones bought several times over (applies to the PS2 as well).

my DS. Wait, let me rephrase that; I loved my DS, my old DS Lite, the new one I bought to replace the damaged-touch-screen old one, and now I love my DSi :shifty:

Back in 2005 it was all 'Sony will kill nintendo'. Looks like we were all wrong. And I prefer the PSP to the DS.

Maybe 1 in 6 people do have a DS.

I didn't put my old DSlite in landfill. I traded it in. Back into the eco-system.

The Christmas period has been pretty weak (apart from Zelda), but 2009 has been a strong year for the DS.

Personally i tend to consider portable consoles and home consoles 2 very different things.

This has the same conveniently fuzzy logic applied to it as when Wii Sports was classified as a record breaking ’selling’ game – in spite of the fact it was given away for free. And #2 makes another good point also [the '2 very different things' post]. Given the whole R4 thing, I wonder how the two ‘consoles’ compare when it comes to attach rates.

Fuzzy logic is about conveniently overlooking specifics – such as calling a “freebie” a “sale” or a “handheld” a “console” when it suits

I have to completely agree with tea here actually, comparing DS sales to PS2 is like comparing a J2ME phone sales to Desktop PC.

If the DS isn't a console what is it?
Is it a book with moving pictures?

It's not a video game console. It's a handheld game console. The referral to video game consoles as "consoles" and handheld game consoles as "handhelds" has been used so much in the past 15 years it's perfectly acceptable.
