Remember Laserdisc? I never had a player myself, but i do recall seeing the LP sized discs on sale at MVC (Starship Troopers being one release i spotted at the time).

Yeah I remember LaserDisc, it was pretty much the definition of a niche format. Had a friend who bought gooseberry fool loads of them for his home cinema though and they were impressive for the time!

I was always a little jealous of laserdisc owners as movies would occasionally be released on the format before VHS.

The waiting times for VHS used to be horrendous, some movies would not come out until over a year after their cinema release.

I still have some HD-DVDs

Transformers
Battlestar Galactica Season 1
Harry Potter 1-5

I think I still have my Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive around somewhere.

I was tempted by the 360 drive at the time. I seem to recall the writing was on the wall even before that had been released though. I certainly remember the likes of Zavvi having lots of fire sales for HD-DVDs not long after release and you could pick up some absolute bargains if you were lucky!

Went looking to see if anywhere sold a digital version of Thor Ragnarok in 4K but can't find it available in 4K digitally anywhere.

Did find out I have a free HD Rental from Google Play though, so I've gone for that for now so I can at least see it before Infinity War.

Is the code for a 4K version though? Or just standard HD?
Which service is it with?

Weird that they let you redeem those codes, yet they offer no facility to actually just buy things.
CEX only give a tenner cash for the 4K as well, so buying it, redeeming the code and trading it would still cost me just the regular Blu-Ray cost.

Just amazes me that there doesn't seem to be a legit way to purchase just a digital 4K film in the UK unless you buy the disc and redeem a code on Ultraviolet.

Thought I'd try my hand at the digital redemption stuff with some stuff laying around at my parents.

First thing I find with a Digital copy is my mums copy of Mrs Browns Boys D'Movie. Go to the URL it tells me, https://www.ultravioletuniversal.com/ and register the code. Tells me it's going to register the digital film to my Flixster account. Ok I don't have one of those, so I quickly set one up. Hit the redeem button. Next page tells me that Flixster have shut down their US operations and I should use Vudu instead. Well that's great except I'm not in the US and Vudu is a region locked service as well. So the digital code for that is unredeemable.

Next thing I pick up is Transformers Dark of the Moon. The code for that isn't Ultraviolet though it's an iTunes code, meaning I could never watch it on my Android device.

Next thing I pick up is a copy of the third Family Guy Star Wars special. It tells me that to redeem the digital copy I have to put Disc 2 into my Disc drive and then enter the serial number. Well that's great except my laptop, like almost every laptop manufactured now, doesn't have a disc drive.

So this digital redemption stuff is just a bit shite then isn't it?

The thing with Ultraviolet is there's strawberry float all to really watch it on. I can access my UV collection via Flixter on my phone but Flixter on my Media Player is useless and doesn't work, no apps here in UK on PS4 to allow you to watch it, can access some of your UV content via the Talk Talk app on Xbone. Disney released Movies Anywhere which allows you to redeem all digital collections in the 1 place but as far as I know there's no plans to release it here yet. And your UV code from the 4K movie isn't 4K digital is it?

Die Hard coming 15th May

This 4K version is, according to Fox, "an all-new 4K Ultra HD remaster" while the included Blu-ray is the same as before.
