Ugh. Might as well put it in the corner.

I'm having a trendy log burner put in the corner, and a fake fireplace with a feature wall, then the tv can go above the fireplace about 7ft up, all watchable from my faux leather L shaped sofa, which is too big for the room and blocks one of the doors.

Ah, gooseberry fool. That aside, are you pleased with it? (Though that would piss me off, right enough.)

I like Samsung products a lot (especially their aesthetics), but my track record with the company is appaling. Literally everything I’ve ever bought from them has broken within 2 years...most recently this year and a nice new fridge freezer (Samsung 6 months vs Hotpoint at 18 years). Before that it was a combination microwave (twice), TV (twice), a bog standard phone, and a DVD player.

I like Samsung stuff, my Samsung TV is the best i've ever had.

The company i've mainly had issues with have been Sony. I've had faulty playstations throughout the history of the brand, my PS1 required me to put it on it's side to get it to work, my first PS2 broke down after just 18 months, my first PS3 had the Yellow light of death, and my first PS4 had it's buttons and disc drive go wrong.

Had good luck with both Samsung and Sony, several TVs and PlayStations without faults.

The only companies I've really had problems with have been Philips and JVC, the latter of which we had 2 televisions, both if which went kaput after 2 years and required several repairs.

I've always been incredibly lucky with electrical devices. I've only ever had to send a laptop off for repair and that's it. All my tvs in my house are currently Samsung and they've all been great with no issues whatsoever.

4K Ultra HD doing alright on disc, though still pretty small...

With more than 330 titles currently available on Ultra HD Blu-ray, 4K disc sales now represent 13 per cent of total Blu-ray spend, according to figures released today by the British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE), and based on data from the Official Charts Company and Futuresource Consulting.

Unsurprisingly, audiovisual triumphs such as Blade Runner 2049 and Ready Player One gained higher percentages of premium format sales, their 4K versions accounting for 27 per cent and 20.2 per cent of their total Blu-ray sales respectively.

Deadpool 2, Mission: Impossible – Fallout and The Greatest Showman (the best-selling title of the year across physical and digital formats) have proved strong 4K Blu-ray performers too.

The success of the format is no doubt down to the growing accessibility of 4K TVs and 4K Blu-ray players in 2017, although 4K Blu-ray is in increasing competition with a growing number of digital platforms (such as Apple iTunes and Rakuten) from which customers can buy and rent 4K movies at more affordable prices.

Digital film sales were up 36 per cent year on year, although physical formats still make up the majority (59 per cent) of transactional film and TV spend - despite the average selling price of Blu-ray discs having increased year-on-year by over 5 per cent, in part due to the higher prices of 4K variants and popular restored versions of catalogue classics, from Arrow Films for example.

I don't know why anyone would spend thousands of pounds on a TV and then decide the best way to watch things would be via a heavily compressed streaming service. 4k Blu-ray sales should be higher but the big companies have done very little to help consumer understanding of the products they provide.

I don’t think I have ever seen 4K Blu Ray available in the supermarket, so that probably doesn’t help. Argos only has a token effort.

The £25 asking prices at launch is very poor value too. The 2 for £30 offers are good, but you have to wait around 4-6 months before new titles are added by Zavvi, HMV and occasionally Amazon.

Yeah the price of entry is the big barrier to 4K Blu-Ray gaining popularity at the moment.
When you can usually get a standard Blu-Ray for £15 or £25 for the 4K version most people are going to just get the standard Blu-Ray. I can't imagine there's enough difference in the costs of production of the discs to justify quite that much of an increase either.

I doubt many people have spent thousands on a 4K TV, they are available for below £1k now.

When faced with the option of something like Netflix for £8 a month or £25 for each individual movie, I can totally understand why people are streaming.

I would suggest that the majority of people would struggle to tell the difference between a 4K and an upscaled Blu-Ray.

Some of us know that it's not the 'best' way, and are frustrated by the loss of both picture and sound quality while streaming vs BR/UHDBR, but the cost is a huge barrier to entry. So Netflix 4k etc is a decent compromise and still looks pretty damn good.

The bundling of the Blu Ray copy with the 4K version seems pointless to me as well. That’s an unnecessary cost increase, especially if you’re also throwing in digital (to watch somewhere else).

I'd love to see this become the main format for home video in the near future.

However there just isn't space for 3 formats, my local HMV still dedicates the majority of its video shelf space to DVD while 4KBR is consigned to a single rack.

Hopefully PS5 and Xbox Two support the format out of the box and we'll begin to see DVD phased out and cheaper 4KBR releases.

I think they do that to try and get people without a 4k player to still buy the 4k version, in case they get a player later.

Yeah, here's hoping.

Personally, I'd have to upgrade my amp as it won't do 4k passthrough (but does do DTS-HD, etc), but I reckon I can take that.

I know I shouldn't be, but I'm often amazed that people still have DVDs as their standard. Their poor eyes :(

It amazes me that people still buy them. Rubbish picture quality by modern standards.

I only buy a 4k bluray when it's something special rather than something I know I'll only watch once. When I do buy it it's because I want the 4k hdr along with the top quality audio

My gripe isn't with those people. Many consumers have gone for either lower or mid-range TVs that suit their needs and budget which is fine. They want an improved quality of image but spending over £1000 either isn't how they want to spend their money or outside of their price range.

It's the people that buy top of the range Sony TVs and then just watch Netflix on them that I don't get. They've clearly got the money if they can afford to spend £3000+ on a TV but what's the point in spending £3000 on a TV if you're just going to steam Netflix or Amazon on it.
