I have Dunkirk pre-ordered, looking forward to seeing that as I saw it in 4D in the cinema and it was a bit of a distraction.

Terminator 2 3D has been delayed till December might just stick to the UHD version.

Get it on UHD, you want the maximum image quality for these things.

Don't watch it on iPlayer, the quality is much shitter than a Blu-ray rip, let alone 4k.

Hi, someone who hasn't owned a stand alone disc playing device for a long time here.

Will a bluray player support 4k bluray, or is that a different format entirely, just given a familiar name, and will need a different player?

No, you need a new dedicated uhd player. The new one is backwards compatible with regular bluray though.

You need a UHD BluRay player to play UHD discs.

I'm currently looking to get one after splurging silly money on a 4K TV but don't really know which players are worth buying - ideally something under £300 as I seem to be spending far too much recently.

I don’t know much about UHD players... but isn’t the Xbox One S console (around £170 with a couple of games) a great option for this?

Yes. It kinda makes a mockery out of the overpriced UHD players at present.

There was some really bad problems with HDR on the Xbox One X but that has now been fixed, though I don’t know if it also affects the S.

Best standalone player on the market at the price is the Sony UBP-X800, which is currently £270. Doesn’t support Dolby Vision HDR though.

The S is the best value proposition by far and will provide a solid option, particularly at £180.

I haven’t read (or personally seen) enough on the X, but that would be my preferred option in 2018 as the X no doubt slips below £400.

Hard to justify spending a £100 extra on a box that only does 1 thing, when if you can settle for a slightly worse picture you can get a games console (and games) chucked in as well. The S isn’t the best 4K player on the market by any means but it’s not some cheapo job like the PS2 was back in the day either.

I would say the xbox one s is the best option overall. I didn’t realise standalone uhd players were so expensive!

The Panasonic DMP UB390EB UHD (4K) Blu-ray player is now £129.99 (reduced from £279.99) at Currys. Another one of Ironhide’s dreams?

I got a £300 player and two uhd blurays free with my tv. It's amazing looking, but i wouldn't pay that much for one. Much better to buy an Xbox one s I'd say.

It's so stupid that Sony don't offer 4k blu ray support on the PS4 given they're such a big part of blu ray development.

How easy is playing movies on the Xbone? is it just a case of inserting the disc and pressing play or are there loads of menus to navigate with the controller. Can you get a remote so you don't have to use the standard controller?

Can't remember if it just plays automatically, I have to find it in media section first.

You could use Xbox app on smartphone instead of a control pad?

Even if it's a bit of a hassle I'd still say the One S is the best choice of UHD player now as you pretty much get a games machine thrown in for free.
A dvd player style remote is indeed available.

I think I'd prefer a standalone player at the moment, I really wouldn't use the xbone to play games as there aren't many games for it I could realistically play. I still haven't been able to try using a games console again and don't really want to get a new one before I know if my somewhat unorthodox control setup is viable.

If and/or when I do get a console it'll be a PS4 (mainly for Everybody's Golf).
