I was thinking about getting this for my Dad, but there's no reviews anywhere for this particular model.

Opted for the Sony one in the end, its a bit pricey but it's going to be a christmas present from the parents who still insist on buying me (and my siblings) a 'main' expensive gift every year. (insert witty Lagamorph comparison here)

I'd love to start buying 4K versions of films, but no way am I paying £25+ for a single film.
The only 4K Blu-Ray I have is Resident Evil The Final Chapter, and only because it was mis-priced on Amazon for the same as the regular Blu-Ray.

I've not bought many 4K Blu-Rays either, I can't justify the expense when the standard 1080p version of most films look perfectly fine for almost half the price.
I managed to get Blade Runner 2049 for £22.50 (zoom.co.uk) but there's no way I was going to pay the £35 Amazon wanted for it.

I just got Thor Ragnarok. It’s very pretty.
Mad max fury road looks astonishing in 4K too.

I need to get Thor Ragnarok before Infinity War as I missed it at the cinema, but the cheapest I've seen the 4K for is £23.99 whilst the regular Bluray is a tenner cheaper.
Plus it'll probably be on Sky Cinema before much longer as well.

4K? 60FPS? I still don't even own a Blu-Ray player!
The time between format changes just seems to be getting too short these days, like strawberry float am I going to replace my massive DVD collection just because some other new shite has come along, especially when everything will ultimately end up streaming/download only anyway.
The best my TV gets is whatever passes for "HD" from Netflix - looks decent enough for me!

That's my thinking at the moment. A bit silly that I bought the X1X as a UHD Blu Ray player but £25 for a film is just a bit too much when we're paying for Sky Q.
Has anyone seen a comparison between Sky 4K movies and UHD Blu Ray? Spiderman and GoTG 2 both look great on Sky.

I don't own an UHD Blu Ray player, and they are still on the pricey side for me. But I do have a gooseberry fool ton of 4K/HDR movies on a portable HDD which plays brilliantly via my TV's USB socket

I don't have any need for 4K discs as i'm happy with my 1080p TV.
I almost always buy my movies on blu ray now too, though it is annoying that some of the films i want on the format just don't seem to have any prospect of being released (True Lies being one example).

Except Video CD was absolutely not a thing in terms of a legitimate commercial option for selling video in the west.
Also DVD didn't release over here until 98, so you've gone from over 20 years between VHS and DVD to barely 10 between Blu-ray and Ultra HD.
Admittedly in my mind it felt like Blu-ray only appeared about 5 minutes ago so that was skewing my perspective somewhat!

Remember Laserdisc? I never had a player myself, but i do recall seeing the LP sized discs on sale at MVC (Starship Troopers being one release i spotted at the time).

No idea what my first VHS was but The Matrix was the last I bought. First DVD was Game Of Death (Bruce Lee) and Blu Ray was Spiderman 3 as it came with my PS3 in a bundle.

I was still buying VHS for quite a while as it was cheaper than DVD and the picture quality didn't matter too much as i was only watching on a little 14 inch CRT TV at the time.
One of the last titles i purchased on the format was Ocean's Twelve in 2005.
I did find though, that towards the end, the quality of the tapes themselves were lower than those i had purchased in the 90's, the picture was worse and they were more prone to going wrong.
