Can the PS4's firmware be updated (in principle) to support the new format, or will the discs use some convenient new laser tech in order to make everyone buy new hardware?

It would have to be a new PS4 - the console doesn't support HDMI 2.0a and the various benefits of Ultra Blu Ray (such as HDR and 60fps). So it could do photos for example in 4K if Sony wanted to, and maybe a few games.

A hardware revision is inevitable.

Outperforming Blu-ray's first 3 months on the market

http://www.denofgeek.com/uk/movies/ultr ... -ray-sales

228,000 discs have been shifted so far in the States, and while that’s not the kind of number to get Champagne corks popping, there are cautious signs of optimism. The Blu-ray format, that launched back in 2006, has sold 57,000 discs in its first three months. Although there was the small matter of the PlayStation 3 around the corner, that would soon significantly boost Blu-ray’s installed base. Ultra HD Blu-ray does not have a games console on its side.

I suppose the Xbox One s and PS4K should boost sales when they arrive. £25-£30 for a 2 hour movie is just horrible value though, even if you do have the system to play it.

Got planet earth 2 and Everest free with my UHD bluray player yesterday, looking forward to planet earth in particular as I've heard it's incredible looking.
