Bulky character models are hardly the fault of the engine. Blame the workman not the tools.

Do you like CliffyB and Epic Games?

Their early work was a little too "PC" for my tastes, but when Gears came out in 2006, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole game has a brown, next-gen look, and a new sheen of console streamlining that really gives the levels a big boost. It's been compared to Max Payne, but I think Gears has a far much more slow, auto-aiming style of play.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Exactly. UE doesn't force artists to make everything brown either.

Anyways:
The DICE summit is currently taking place as awards are being handed out and moments ago Mark Rein took the stage. While talking about Unreal Engine 4 he said that the graphics engine was running on “systems I can’t talk about by name.” This would obviously point to the next generation of consoles being pretty far into development. Let the rumors continue to come out of the woodworks!

UPDATE: The quote was technically “Including systems we can’t name yet.”

The way some people talk you'd think Epic forces devs that use Unreal 3 to make their games 'brown' and full of 'space marines'.

I'm guessing it's more than likely the Xbox 3 will be running the next Unreal but I wonder what chances o the WiiU being able to run the Unreal 4 engine. It would give a pretty good indicator of just how powerful the WiiU is if i can.

Given how closely Nintendo have been working with third-parties on developing the WiiU, I'd be very surprised if it couldn't run the next big engine.

Could do, Mark Rein said this about the Wii U at E3 2011:
Rein was also enthusiastic about Nintendo’s new hardware.

“I can tell you that I got to see it at E3 and it was what I expected of course. We were very excited to play some of their demos, see how good the feel of the hardware was – it’s a very impressive system and I think it’s gonna do quite well,” he said.

“‘If Nintendo made a system that could run our engine, we’d be on it like water on fish,’” Rein then quoted himself from earlier in the year, concluding, “And so when someone asked me what I thought about the Wii U, I said, ‘Water, meet fish.’”

Really? Because given that it was posted immediately after a "WiiU will run Unreal Engine" post, and featured a rolleyes, it comes across as "this is what you'll get on WiiU lol" post.

Was it the Unreal Engine 3 tech demo that had an enemy walking around, and then various types of coloured light and different material types being showcased? One of the few demos that wowed me at the time, that.

Looking forward to seeing what they have to show.

I remember that tech demo being shown at E3 2004 with Gears of War shown at E3 the following year.

Unreal Engine 1 demo from 1996

Unreal Engine 2 demo from 2000

I know

Gears 3 and Bulletstorm (which I've played recently), both had such bright and colourful locations. Developers can do whatever they want with the engine, if the mainstream don't want brown games about space marines then clearly their sales will decline and they'll start making the colourful, artistic games that everyone wants :P

Thats pretty much only on console tho. More a symptom of their lack of a decent amount of ram than anything else.

I always thought it was symptomatic of the slow speed of the external storage.

By loading low-res textures and continuing to load higher res textures and replace them on the fly during gameplay, more time could be spent playing and less loading.
