The Wii U Won't Be Getting Unreal Engine 4

I figured I'd ask straight-out, so during the Q&A with Rein, I did. "Will UE4 run on the Wii U?"

"Hahaha no." Rein said, with expert comedic timing. The room erupted with laughter. As the laughs died down, Rein continued: "I mean, sorry, it's not really a correct answer. We're not… we have Unreal Engine 3 for the Wii U. Right? And Unreal Engine 3 is powering all kinds of amazing games, still lots of games are being made with Unreal Engine 3. We announced today about a new Unreal Engine 3 license. Unreal Engine 3 doesn't disappear because of Unreal Engine 4. But our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles. That's really what our energies are focused on. If you want to make a Wii U game, we have Unreal Engine 3, and it's powering some of the best games on the Wii U already.

"Nothing controversial, guys," he jokingly chided.

UE4 Elemental demo apparently running on a PS4 devkit.

The implication Epic was making in revealing the Elemental demo running on PS4 development hardware was obvious - that today's cutting-edge PC tech demo is tomorrow's run-time on next-gen console hardware. Asked directly if its brand new Infiltrator demo could run on next-gen console, Epic vice president Mark Rein replied:

"Well, let's put it this way. Last year we saw the Elemental demo running on the same piece of hardware and this year we saw the Elemental running on PS4, so I'd say draw your own conclusions... The feeling around Epic on Infiltrator is that this is the pipeline, this is the way we're going to work, making games that are going to have this kind of feel to them, this much detail, this many shadows and it'll just get better and better as we optimise the engine further and further."

Can anyone spot any noticeable aliasing in the Infiltrator demo? Both PS4 and PC versions of the Elemental demo have noticeable aliasing, as did the Samaritan demo. If a single GTX 680 is capable of rendering them graphics with an insane AA setting then I'm very impressed. Unless some kind of extremely impressive post process AA is now part of UE4.

Swiped from GAF/EG

Unreal Engine 4 jettisons SVOGI realtime lighting for static lighting (lightmass)

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-gdc-2013-unreal-engine-4

The key differentiating factor between last year's demo and this newer iteration is that the Sparse Voxel Octree Global Illumination (SVOGI) lighting system hasn't made the cut. Instead, Epic is aiming for very high quality static global illumination with indirect GI sampling for all moving objects, including characters.

"[SVOGI] was our prototype GI system that we used for Elemental last year. And our targets, given that we've had announced hardware from Sony, that's where we're going to be using Lightmass as our global illumination solution instead of SVOGI," senior technical artist and level designer Alan Willard told Eurogamer, stressing that this new iteration of the technology has evolved significantly beyond the current-gen system used in titles like Mass Effect 3. Certainly, just the presence of so much more memory on next-gen platforms should improve lightmap quality on its own.

Is he only talking about consoles or is PC included as well? It's disappointing that Epic were unable to convince Sony and MS to up their specs to make this feasible.

Well...how do we know it's not feasible? Next generation hasn't even started yet.

Looks pretty cool but still more interested in Kojima's FOX engine at the moment which looks mighty impressive, especially after the GDC stuff.

I'd imagine this will make loads of money for Epic like UE3. Hopefully they show some gameplay of their new game at E3 to get a better look at their engine in action.

It all comes down to Epic's frosty relations with Nintendo. The tech could handle a scaled down UE4, it's supposed to be really scaleable, it's just that Epic can't be bothered, because they're a bunch of banana splits.

Because Epic have said it's not going to be part of it?

That's not what I mean.

Feasibility depends on capability. If capabilities improves over time, as Carny has said in his latest Japanese interview, then maybe SVOGI may be a possibility. Lets not forget the PS4 architecture isn't pure off-the-shelf parts. Most of it is custom and Cerny stated first generation titles will be lacking features that developers will need to learn over time. It might be 3rd generation games before we see games really push the PS4.

Mark Rein does a Wii U-turn...

But that's not technically true, he admitted the next day, walking back his gaffe. "You heard the stupid gaffe yesterday about the Wii U," he said. "If someone wants to take Unreal Engine 4 and ship a game on Wii U, they can! If they wanna ship an Unreal Engine 4 game on Xbox 360, they could make it happen." While that game might not look as pretty as it would on a "true" next-gen console, the new engine is scalable to a variety of platforms, including mobile.

In other words Epic aren't interested but anyone else can make a Wii U UE4 game if they want. You have to wonder if Nintendo took on board any input from third parties at all.

There won't be any UE4 games on Wii U, just as there were no UE3 games on Wii, PS2 and the original Xbox.

Nintendo has been going out of its way to attract third parties, but some are just dicks.

They could do with getting UE 3 running properly, never mind 4. The Arkham City port ran like ass.

What the hell does that even mean?

Clearly the Wii U doesn't support all these fancy new graphical features, but you don't need Epic to tell you that and just because it doesn't doesn't mean they didn't talk to 3rd parties about what they wanted.

If Epic say we want the most powerful up to date PC components in your next consoles, does it mean the console creators aren't listening when they don't follow through on that?

Damn those companies and their desire to make money. Greedy sods.
