When eight friends are trapped on a remote mountain retreat and things quickly turn sinister, they start to suspect they aren’t alone.

Gripped by fear and with tensions in the group running high, you’ll be forced to make snap decisions that could mean life, or death, for everyone involved.

Every choice you make in your terrifying search for answers – even the seemingly trivial ones – will carve out your own unique story.

With spine-tingling performances from a Hollywood cast including Hayden Panettiere (Heroes, Nashville) brought to life with the power of PlayStation®4 – your actions alone will decide who survives Until Dawn.

In an unpredictable and dynamically adaptive story, crafted in consultation with Until Dawn scriptwriters and indie horror auteurs Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick, eight friends come together at a remote mountain getaway and embark upon a night of unexpected terror. Through the course of the night, anyone can live, anyone can die, and things aren't always what they seem. Twists and turns will keep you guessing right to the end as you play each of the friends. The decisions you make on their behalf will determine who survives Until Dawn.

With innovative choice mechanics and the Butterfly-Effect Interface, players can clearly see the path of their story amid the thousands that are possible. Seemingly insignificant choices as well as huge moral dilemmas that will question your sense of fairness, good and evil, can have major unforeseen consequences.

Using the power of the PlayStation®4 and the superior rendering capability of the Killzone™ Shadowfall Engine, together with our own major enhancements in lighting, camera, and animation systems, Until Dawn brings emotional and credible performances of a talented Hollywood cast to life in its realistically terrifying environments.

I like the look of that. I fully expect the usual halfers to bottle out of playing it.

Doesn't look like the typical survival horror game where you're basically spending the game commuting genocide instead of trying to survive.

I'd love for this to follow Alien Isolation's lead on what survival actually means.

Gameplay @ 1 min in

I was expecting this to be in the vein of the many first person horror games we've seen recently but it actually looks to be very heavily influenced by Telltale's stuff. That's probably an immediate turn off for a lot of people but I'm way more interested in it now.

Looks pretty cool. I guess it'll have some replay value as well as it's unlikely you'll get them all through the night on your first play through.

About it being a Silent Hill tease? Only one person found that after it had been available for a good number of hours, many more played it and didn't but still "enjoyed" it. You can still play the game!

I think the problem with this is that it's going too hard for the teen scream angle and, because these are just virtual characters, I fear it will come across as goofy more than scary. Horror games work, in my mind, on atmosphere. It's all sound and light cues, and never on characterization or simply because you might be in danger.

I like the look of this, apart from the cues to go over to stuff and press x etc, why cant games let you search/find things rather than point everything out

That girl's incredibly annoying, especially the way she's painted the inside of her finger nails white...

..hope she dies first.

Exactly as I suspected, they're focusing on scaring the character rather than the player. It's a terrible approach. You can't just go from the character having the gooseberry fool scared out of them to them just casually walking around inspecting stuff at the player's pace. Every horror game I've ever played has the player character never show any fear, and the sense of agency works by the player's fear being projected to the character, not the other way around. They're getting it so spectacularly wrong, and seeing the production values ramp up like this is frustrating.

I think Alien Isolation and the Silent Hills teaser have convinced me that horror only works in first person.

But surely you can get a different sort of enjoyment out of this game? If they follow the teen slasher movie mould it could be full of parody and have some minor scares along the way. As you control who dies, you might even revel in deliberately killing off one of the more annoying characters.

Not every horror game has to scare the gooseberry fool out of you, the same is true of the film medium.

The only thing missing from Resident Evil 4 that I could think of, is a section where you're chased through a pitch black forest by El Salvador. It's strange that the most frightening horror film ever, Texas Chainsaw Massacre created a scene where a woman is being chased at night through the woods and few games or films since have latched on to it as a source of horror. Or have they, I don't watch/play much horror. Any parts where you're being chased and, with Resident Evil's controls, fumbling around trying to navigate around corners as best you can, was tense. Mirrors Edge created the same kind of excitement, of feeling worthless compared to the superior faster chaser, forcing you into mistakes you wouldn't normally make. I love being chased or chasing, it's why i watch a load of Korean detective thrillers. Have many horror games played with sound that effectively? Being able to hear a sound in the distance but not know how close it is, just the threat of it and knowing you're vulnerable would be enough to make me hyperventilate.

The other frightening realistic thing about Texas Chainsaw Massacre was that it's not paced like a film, they just get to the house in the day and have a walk around and then start getting butchered. I don't find these videos scary really. Don't care much for haunted houses. The woods, the woods scare me, nature, the unknown.

People overlook Resident Evil 4's scariness, i think. It's not equal to watching IT when i was about 5, and nothing psychological, but those black things that creeped towards you at a slow pace, that you couldn't slow down with normal shots, were unnerving. It taps into the fear of zombies always lurching towards you no matter what, you can only delay the inevitable.

Seems to be a few horror games around at the moment, after Condemned launched with the 360 i thought they'd be more like that. Will this generation be defined by horror games, will that be the next thing ? I'm really in the mood for them, i never played a Silent Hill, kind of missed out.
