It's almost like years of training don't always mean anything when you are in a situation where a crazy person is running around with an AR-15.

Still, arming teachers will probably completely solve the problem.

It's the 'rifle' bit following the semi automatic that is the point. The police officer has 6-8 shots to take this person down from fairly close range?

I watched a programme on Sky Atlantic last night called active shooter or something about the school shooting in Santa Monica. The police training there was four officers with shotguns moving in a diamond formation. It didn't give the impression that there was training for someone to John McClane the situation.

This is from a piece in the NY Times back in 2005 about accuracy of police shootings

In 2005, officers fired 472 times in the same circumstances, hitting their mark 82 times, for a 17.4 percent hit rate. They shot and killed nine people that year.

In all shootings — including those against people, animals and in suicides and other situations — New York City officers achieved a 34 percent accuracy rate (182 out of 540), and a 43 percent accuracy rate when the target ranged from zero to six feet away. Nearly half the shots they fired last year were within that distance.

In Los Angeles, where there are far fewer shots discharged, the police fired 67 times in 2006 and had 27 hits, a 40 percent hit rate, which, while better than New York’s, still shows that they miss targets more often they hit them.

AR-15 guy with a death wish vs guy with pistol who wants to live. Its a no brainer that the cop would be just another victim.

However, I don't think the anti-gun lobby should let this one go. We have an armed officer on scene and its proven that it is largely ineffective against a mass shooter.

Funnily enough on the programme I watched yesterday, one of the policeman who was one those who ultimately stopped the gunman was off duty and made the point that he was worried about going in with a gun in case he was mistaken as the assailant. He was still wearing a police issue t-shirt and trousers. It's pretty obvious how this could play out with a bunch of civilians.

Presumably, the confined corridors-and-rooms environment of a school should make it easier to bring the AR-15 death wish guy down with a pistol.

Then again though, the officer presumably wasn't schooled in room clearing tactics.

I should never own a gun as Google's auto correct genuinely makes me angry enough to kill.

There's also the obvious danger of the swat team turning up and shooting a few teachers by mistake or the teachers getting into intense gunfights with each other.

Having guns in schools is about as sensible as instead of having slow speed zones outside schools you claim that letting people floor it at top speed outside schools will prevent road accidents as the kids won't have time to throw themselves in front of a car going 140 mph.
I'm pretty sure a couldn't jump in front of a Veyron going 240 so that's obviously the safest speed of all.

Thats the part that amazes me about these people suggesting the "good guys" should have guns too. When the SWAT team shows up theyre not gonna be asking questions, everyone with a gun will be seen as the "bad guy" and shot on sight.
