It's not really possible to answer the poll question. Drones are not evil or wrong by themselves, the ethics all depends what they are used for, the same as guns, missiles, bombs, aeroplanes, trucks, helicopters, etc.

The social media stuff over this at the moment is bizarre. Members of IS in Iraq using hashtag #AmessagefromISIStoUS to send threats directly to America, with Americans responding in kind. Reading them feels ridiculous considering the actual horrific violence that is going on. Beware if you search this tag as there are some graphic images.

Drones might save the lives of pilots but they can cause unnecessary civilian casualties if used incorrectly.

The US air force doesn't exactly have a great track record.

If the US has the means to avoid casualties on their side whilst dealing maximum damage to the crazies, then of course they should use drones. No point in expensively-trained soldiers or pilots getting killed fighting religious wackos when they don't have to.

I wonder how many members of the USAF have been killed (while flying) due to enemy action in the Middle East. My guess is not very many.

You're probably right, but that still doesn't change the fact that the US has the ability to fly unmanned missions, thus reducing the number of USAF fatalities to zero. I can see why that's a popular method of warfare for them.

If the use of drone strikes against ISIS can help prevent a genocidal tragedy, then so be it.

There is not much difference between a drone and guided missile in principle; both are remotely operated killing devices. Drones just happen to be ordinance delivery systems rather than the ordinance themselves. As far as I understand it guided missiles have been used for quite a while before drones came into use so it is not as big a change as people seem to think.

Makes sense. IS are basically the real life equivalent of internet trolls. Which is a truly horrifying prospect. :dread:

That and cost. A Reaper drone costs $12m while a F-22 is ten times that.

Drones are awesome. Kill the enemy whilst keeping yourself out of harms way, I can't see any downside. This has pretty much been the basic theory of warfare since we first started sharpening sticks. Now it's just been perfected.

If only the IDF had drones...

Looking after your own citizens has gotta come before worrying about the enemy or citizens.

I'd be very surprised if the IDF did not have drones.

I saw a picture of people they had crucified. Reports of enslavement also abound.

I know I am not the sort to hate easily so it means a lot when I say kill these mummy strawberry floaters. Bomb them into the stone age, which is exactly where beliefs like theirs belong.
