I'm really looking forward to watching the Survivor finale later. The season started off quite weak but the last few episodes have been brilliant.

Yeah totally! I’ve found this season really fun, it was a slow start but they spent a lot of time pre-merge setting everything up and now we’re getting the pay off.

I’m thinking that Ben winning is too obvious, on top of being public enemy number one, he has been such a heavy on screen presence literally every single episode. CBS usually doesn’t edit their winner like that. My pre-season winner pick was actually Devon (which was based on all the podcasts that were recorded before the season started filming). He’s definitely a lot more savvy than he’s coming across when not in confessionals and he said that was going to be part of his plan. He’s really not had all that much negativity, still not had a vote against him, everyone seems to like him and nobody seems to see him as a threat.

I think everyone has a shot, but in this order: Ben > Devon > Mike > Chrissy > Ryan.

I think Mike has a decent shot. They’ve got two attempts to deny Ben immunity and Mike could make Chrissy and Ryan see how big a threat Devon is.

My only gripe with this season is that I feel it’s gone overboard on the idols. Post-merge, 5 have been played (Joe, Mike, Ryan and Ben x2). I get that they add excitement and unpredictability but I personally feel it’s moving the game away from ‘Survivor’ to ‘Who can find the idol’. There was also the super-idol Ryan gave to Chrissy, the idol that Lauren never played because Mike threw half of it in the fire, and Joe used one pre-merge to save Desi at the tribal where Devon was vote-blocked.

Other than that I think it’s been a really strong cast, full of people that want to play the game and people that are fans of the game to boot. Looking forward to the finale tonight.

Yeah agree with all of that.

Ben is clearly the best player, but him getting to final 3 would make for a boring final tribal council as he's guaranteed the win. I don't think he'll win both challenges to get there but he'll be back for an all-stars I'm sure.

I have a gut feeling that Chrissy is going to win, but I hope not. Devon could probably convince a jury to vote for him when he explains the awesome 'double agent ben' idea that he came up with. Mike as a surprise underdog is another possibility. I don't see any way Ryan can take it, which means he should be guaranteed a seat at the final three.

I guess I see the final three as Mike, Ryan and the winner.

Survivor
I have such a massive problem with this finale.
This new twist they've put in basically renders final immunity totally pointless. You can lose and still win the firemaking contest and get to the end. All this does is make Final Five the new Final Four - the biggest threats just have to go one spot earlier - but with idols and the like valid until Final 5... It's all stupid.

Having one every season now cheapens the drama of when one happens organically.

Jeff Probst has said that they put this in because he was annoyed at seeing so many final jurors being eliminated because they were likely to win. What he forgets is that this was the exact reason that they changed from a Final 2 to Final 3. Where does it end?

I don't have any problems with Ben the person being the winner, but he really shouldn't have been eligible to win. Final immunity is supposed to be what it says - Final. If you can't get the job done, sorry, you're potentially on the jury. Speaking of the jury, I still dislike the new discussion format.

And it seems like they're doubling down on the massive amount of advantages next season.

All that aside, I liked most of the episode. I thought the following bits were good:

- Ben's sheer will and bloody-mindedness to never give up on searching for the idol.
- Devon sniffing out Ben's final immunity idol and saving himself by voting for Mike. Amazing.
- Chrissy's idea to use the dead super idol with Ryan's note to construct a legit rouse. Shame Ben had already found the new idol but it was a nice idea.
- Chrissy' final tribal performance has to go down as one of the best losing performances. Very impressive,
but ultimately Ben had so clearly outplayed everyone that it didn't matter

So while watching the finale I thought it was brilliant, but I was rooting for Ben the whole way. In hindsight I agree with a lot of the criticisms, but I still feel Ben deserved the win over the other three (Devon could have made for a good winner too)

There was definitely too many idols this season but that's because they were being played soon after they were found and then put straight back into the game again. I think the problem isn't with the idol rules but that they were too easy to find. Instead of having to dig around trees or look under rocks, they just have to find some graffiti on a tree. When they add secret advantages and super idols in too then that should be instead of idols, not in addition to them.

The firemaking challenge for final 4 is a big improvement IMO. I know Survivor is a social game and you need to avoid painting a target on your back, but I like that there's always a way to survive if you have that target and don't win the challenge. This season for example, Ben was already the big target with ~10 Players left, well before he'd played any idols. But with 10 players you just need to sway 1 or 2 people and that target can be removed, but when there are three people that refuse to talk to you (purely because you are favourite to win) it seems unfair that you have no options if you don't win immunity.

Players in the next season were told about the change beforehand, so it just means they will be thinking about final 4 rather than final 3. I'd definitely like to see how it plays next time (with players aware) before writing it off completely. I do think the challenge should change occasionally though, so it's not always fire-making.

I agree with all of your good bits. Devon writing Mike's name down would have sealed it for him to win if he'd beaten Ben at making fire.

I wasn't so keen on the final tribal council but I feel it was edited to make Ryan and Chrissy look good so that it wasn't so obvious that Ben was going to win once he got there.

The reunion show was bad, they didn't talk to anyone. The highlight reel was great though and next season looks interesting, but I've no idea how it will work.

Don't get me wrong, Ben definitely deserved his win - I just don't like the way it went down. Almost seemed like production decided to throw in a curve ball to try and save him. If I was into conspiracies I could buy that,
but I'm not, so I don't. ;)

I really don't like the fact that production have made the mandatory fire making a permanent fixture without seeing how it was received first.

If you think I'm unhappy you should check out the Survivor Reddit - some of them are completely apoplectic and have vowed to never watch the show again.

That reunion show... What reunion show. They spoke to 3 people aside from Ben for a total of about 6 minutes.

What did you make of the preview for next season?

The set looks really cool, and two starting tribes instead of three is good. Cast looks very young, I prefer a varied mix of people. I like that always try something different but it's hard to guess the mechanics based on that preview.
