Completely forgot all about this. Sadly between finishing up Uncharted 4 and Fire Emblem Fates' release on Friday, I'll have no time to play it for a while. Fortunately I've already played and completed it on PS3. I just keep buying games I already own. I'm curious to see the trophies actually, as it didn't have any on PS3. That PlayStation 3 logo on the original's cover. :dread:

I don't know a lot about this series but I watched a few preview vids of this PS4 version and it looks pretty cool. I suspect it's a game that you have to put a bit of time into to get yor head around the mechanics?

Yeah, I was never a fan of that Spiderman typeface used for the PS3. The updated design was way better; simple but stylish.

If you're someone who plays a lot of SRPGs then you'll probably pick it up very quickly. But it does do some quite interesting things, the movement system is a little different to the typical SRPG, but the fundamental attack mechanics are very straight forward and typical of the genre (certain units work better against others, etc). Although I haven't played it for a whole generation really, so perhaps there's more too it when starting out than I remember.

Thanks for the info, BAKA.

Yeah, from the vids that I saw it seems that, once you've chosen your tactics, there is an element of "free play" i.e. short arcade-style gameplay elements. It looks interesting although, as I'm cutting back on picking up games, I think I'll be holding off from this. I'm keen to keep an ear open for how you and other folk get on with it, though.

Once you strip it down it is essentially a turn based strategy game just with real time movement in 3d instead of within a grid. You get a dropping bar the dictates how many actions you can take, shooting is similar to the VATS system in Fallout 3/4.

I had it on the PS3 and it starts easy but some of the later levels are much tougher and you can hit a wall. Loved the graphics style and how the characters interacted. Recommended if you like your turn based games

:o - I loved VATS! I won't be picking this up at the moment but it'll be something to look out for in future sales.

I loved the style of this game but hated the gameplay. Almost tricked myself into buying it again.

This confuses me too, it's the best part of the game.

The ranking system is pants.

Don't matter how well you did by keeping everyone alive and wipe out the entire map, you still get the worst ranking.

You can't really speed through a battle, can you?

Other than that it's absouletly brilliant.

But I'll wait for it to be on sale. Have too many games piling up.

I might be wrong but I think the ranking system is entirely based on number of turns taken.

Yep, you get the best ranks by using the fewest number of turns. That was the only thing that I didn't like about it as it's fantastic otherwise. I ended up ignoring the ranks and just trying to keep everyone alive as I played :toot:

Really slow compared to something like Fire Emblem.
The mission that made me give up on it you had to get to this village and destroy a tank, but to get there you had to go down these pathwys. The game has fog of war right, but also enemies shoot you if you walk into their line of site. So I walk around a corner with my scout, there's an enemy there I couldn't have known would be there, and he starts firing and kills my scout. Which would have been okay if not for the permadeath.

I just felt like there were too many things getting in the way of the actual strategy. A lot of missions took a few turns just to get to the enemy.

I just didn't find the combat fun and thought the real time elements just got in the way.

I found it as quick as playing as Fire Emblem. The scout is meant to be sent out to scout the area and you can then see the enemies the scout has seen on the map, you can still save your characters if you get one of your troops to them, they then call for a medic (Fina from Skie of Arcadia) to remove them from the battle. You can even recall them into battle if you have a base/captured an enemy flag.

The actual strategy of the game is playing a game of seeing where the enemy are placed and adjust your characters accordingly, the beauty of the game is that you are not restricted by having to be on the next square, like in Fire Emblem, Advance War, Final Fantasy Tactics etc, you can use elevated positions to attack the enemy which gives you a better/stronger chance of taking down that enemy. If enemies are behind cover trying to shoot them is stupid, instead grenade the cover and let the person take the shoot. Strategy further comes from making sure after you have moved a character they can still get somewhere safe. You can really screw yourself if you leave the Eidelweiss out in the open with a lancer right next to it, so always think about the next move as well as the current move. The depth is there, some battles are super quick some are super long, I have played a Fire Emblem battle for over an hour before, same thing here.

I can't rate this game highly enough, it is probably not as good Fire Emblem Awakenings or Tactics Ogre, but there is not much in it. I am finding myself wanting to play this again way more than playing Uncharted 4 and I love that game.

This strawberry floating game

I heartily agree with Suzz's commendation :toot: Valkyria Chronicles feels like a wonderful mix of Advance Wars and Fire Emblem in 3D so I wouldn't call it slower than Fire Emblem or lacking in tactics. When I first played it, I felt that it was what Battalion Wars should have been

Got my copy today :toot: I never 'got' this game the first time I played it (it had a demo if I recall correctly?) but a friend encouraged me to give it another go and it became one of my favorites of last gen! I'll finish Uncharted 4 and then get stuck into this
