Does this mean we're going to get Half Life 3?

strawberry floating bizarre. Campo are a narrative single player focused company and Valve are a service provider more than they are a games developer these days. God knows what the Santo guys saw over there to make them think this was a good idea

That blog post is so cringe, it’s unreal. Kiss goodbye to ever finishing your game, boys.

So a bunch of people who left Telltale to start their own independent studio sell themselves off to a massive company after releasing one game, bravo guys.

Also, guess we won't be seeing that game on consoles.

Yeah, this was my first thought too

Still, no doubt they're a lot richer now than they would if they'd stayed at Telltale

Haven't Valve released everything from Orange Box onwards on multiple platforms?

we can elaborate a little bit on this big decision. First, we really like making video games. Furthermore, and perhaps more accurately, we really like making and producing entertainment. From the day-to-day production of our last game, Firewatch, to the way we run the company, make merchandise, meet players at expos and shows, send out a quarterly literary journal, throw open-to-the-public game demos in the middle of an artificial forest—all of it is geared towards surprising, delighting, and entertaining the customers who have shared in our success.

In Valve we found a group of folks who, to their core, feel the same way about the work that they do

Ah Valve, the company that love making/releasing games and categorically NOT turning their storefront into an open sewer, making tonnes of money from non-games, asset flip garbage and all those tiny cuts from every pretend item they behaviourally condition people to want, only stepping up to notionally do anything about the unregulated gambling market they were profiting from when it hit the headlines.

It could be interpreted that Valve realised that they've not got much left in the way of developers who actually want to work on story-based single-player focused titles and brought the Campo Santo guys in to give them that back again.

Not that I'm suggesting that this means Half-Life 3, but it could signal an intent to get back to actually making some games.

It is true that valve are apparently making 2 or 3 "proper" narrative games at the moment however they are vr based and considering how small that market is at the moment and whether or not it will grow, we probably won't see those games for strawberry floating ages. There is a tonne of stuff to smooth out for for example VR FPS gameplay.

Btw the portal team never even released a finished commercial game before they were bought in so there's that.

This isn't really a comparable point as the Valve that bought the Narbuncular Drop team were the Valve that were making HL2, and to whom Steam was an interesting side project.

The Valve we have today is a service provider, with more in common with AT&T or Virgin, than it is a games developer. This move seems incredibly cynical from both sides: CS made a bucket load of cash and Valve can say 'look, we still (buy up companies that) make games!"

I think what gets me most is that CS always prided themselves on being a small, highly reactive team with an intimate relationship with their fans. When PewDiePie used a racist slur, they immediately ordered a takedown of any videos he made using their products and put out a harshly worded statement voicing their disgust at the guy. Now, instigating a DMCA takedown was a controversial move, but it was made because of the passion these guys had for their community, and the gaming community as a whole. Can you imagine Valve letting them do something like that in the future? Absolutely not.

And here I thought the title story would be the worst thing in this thread.

I'm only messing. There is something delightfully ironic that the self righteous bunch behind this would sell out to a company that has completely moved away from single player games and abandoned their fan base in the pursuit of profit, Santo Campo deserve some criticism.
