Firefly, Blood & Chrome and Stargate Universe would all get my money...

A Firefly kickstarter would surely break all records. Might also make me support something on kickstarter.

And enough money. If he took a share of the avengers profits instead of a standard pay for the film he could just fund it himself, no? Failing that, realise on the sequel to do that. Learning (from himself) that Tarantino can make about $30 million per film has confused me about why a -admittedly available for hire- director would not use whatever money they'd made in their career to fund whatever passion project they desire. Example being Sam Raimi doing Oz. He can't not be mega rich after the Spiderman trilogy.

The inevitable problem of fans funding projects is that it'll always be in the creators mind that it'll be their duty to please them, which can't be healthy when it's something with a history returning once more with the threat of staleness being probable.

Wasn't it Nathan Fillion that said he wish he could get the money to bring Firefly back? If there was a Firefly Kickstarter I would doubt Joss Whedon would be involved other than maybe a producers credit, and I'm fine with that as long as the majority of the rest of the old cast and crew were on board.

I don't know if anyone on here watches it but it looks like Kickstarter may also be used to bring back Todd and The Book of Pure Evil, as preople are mentioning Kickstarter on their Facebook page and they have responded to say they are watching the situation with Veronica Mars and to expect an announcement from the producers soon. I really hope this happens as I love TATBOPE.

I never watched Veronica Mars. What's it about?

It was a noir detective show set in a high school. The first two seasons had a season-long whodunnit mystery arc that developed over the course of the season. Network execs messed with season 3 and shelved the long arc structure.

Jeremy Jahns on youtube did a Firefly review the other day and mentioned a great idea - TellTale games do a Walking Dead-style Firefly series. Old cast back for the voices. Therefore new Firefly without the whole 'damn they old' thing. :datass:

Pledge $10,000 or more

1 backer All gone!

You will get a speaking role in the movie. Here’s the scene — Veronica is eating with the man in her life. Things have gotten tense between them. You are the waiter/waitress. You approach the table, and you say, “Your check, sir.” We guarantee you will be on camera as you say the line. Unless you go all hammy and ruin the scene and we have to cut you out, but that would be a sad day for all of us. Just say the line. Don’t over-think it. You’re a waiter. Your motivation is to turn over the table. In addition to appearing in the movie, you’ll receive a framed copy of the page of the script that includes your line. You’ll get an invitation to the premiere and the after party. You are, after all, in the movie. Think of yourself as Guy Fleegman from Galaxy Quest. People will surely want autographs. You’ll also receive the signed movie poster, the Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack, the digital version of the movie, the T-shirt and a pdf of the shooting script.

How will I ever break into show-business now?

That's a great reward.

I hope that the backer isn't some sweaty neckbearded super-fan with more money than sense, that'd just be embarrassing.

Is this officially available in the UK? I've been hearing about if for years, but was under the impression you could only get it by importing the DVDs.

It aired on E4 and was released in region 2 on DVD but good luck finding a version which doesn't have a German cover. I would imagine you can switch the audio to English.

The Firefly universe would actually be a fantastic setting for a game. :datass:

I was reading about this today. Great news. The first series was fantastic- tightly plotted and structured, witty, dark and clever. The second series was not quite as good but still great. I'm still surprised that so many people have never heard of it, though I guess that's down to the lack of UK DVD release and E4 showing it at daft times.

Rab Florence was having a go at Kickstarter/Veronica Mars on Twitter earlier. His argument was that as a movie investor, you should be entitled to a share of the profits.

I don't see a problem with it. You're getting something in return for your money, and the project gets funded. Win-win. I really don't think the Veronica Mars movie would have been made otherwise, and no one is forcing anyone to contribute.

Donations seem to have slowed dramatically since the $3m mark was hit. :(

He does seem to get a little, let's say overly passionate about some subjects. I do see his point when you consider stuff like the one off $10,000 dollar tier to appear in the movie with a spoken line. That's literally paying to be an extra, when all the other extras will be paid. On the other hand it's clearly the kind of thing that big fans of the show would love if they have that sort of money to spare, so while technically exploitative, it's not like they're being tricked! For regular tiers it's certainly no worse than a pre-order offer, assuming the project is being run by reputable types of course and aren't likely to take the money and run.

Ultimately though Kickstarter is what it is. It's a site to raise funds in order to kickstart stuff, not a tool for investors. People pledge money for stuff willingly, in full knowledge of what they will get in return. Even the projects from people who blatantly don't need Kickstarter funding are fair enough really, as once again the backers are pledging their money in full knowledge of what they get from doing so. What's wrong with that? It's a bit like arguing that rich people shouldn't be paid to do their job any more, as if they don't "need" the money then why give them more, right?

Anyway, in the case of the VM movie I really don't think it would see the light of day without Kickstarter. It's the kind of thing that TV companies would look at and say, "nah, far too risky", and therefore perfect Kickstarter fodder. It might be risky for an investor, but not for a simple pledge from the same audience it's being made for. All they care about is that it gets made, not that it makes a profit.
